  3. He’s just for unhealthy mandates

Comment by Buford Thursday, Aug 5, 21 @ 11:03 am

  4. He needs a better campaign manager. He walked himself into a corner here.

    any sort.

Meaning both positive and negative mandates. Mandates to require you to do something, as well as mandating you to not do something - like say an abortion.

Nice to see Bailey has clumsily stumbled into supporting womens rights.

  5. So, get rid of smoking bans, seatbelt laws, restaurant health codes, etc. Got it. He will be a great governor. /s

  6. Follow-up question. Have you spoken with your brother-in-law? The one currently on a ventilator from Covid?

  8. Nice of Joe Dubose to give out his cell phone number. He will likely get some interesting calls now.

“I am confident that parents and boards of education know what is best” No, they don’t.

He also talks about science- science says the vaccine is the best defense. So is he advocating for a vaccine mandate?

And he clearly is in support of women’s right to choose. If he wasn’t he would be a hypocrite. I am sure he doesn’t want that.

Lots of good questions from the press.

Comment by JS Mill Thursday, Aug 5, 21 @ 11:09 am

  9. I look forward to being allowed to smoke a gigantic, comical cigar at his campaign events while coughing without a hand over my mouth. I will also offer people food after it fell on the ground for over five seconds.

Good luck with this one, Bailey staff.

  10. “I am not for any sort of health mandate.”
Does this mean Gomer will allow women to make their own health decisions or are there exceptions

  11. I don’t think this would poll very well in Hinsdale.

Comment by AC Thursday, Aug 5, 21 @ 11:19 am

  12. Mandates period or just at the state level? Should a store be allowed to mandate masks?

So is he against health inspectors, does it take the libertarian viewpoint of ‘well if people get sick eating someplace they will stop eating there and the market will solve the problem’?

Comment by OneMan Thursday, Aug 5, 21 @ 11:22 am

  13. ===So is he against health inspectors, does it take the libertarian viewpoint of ‘well if people get sick eating someplace they will stop eating there and the market will solve the problem’?===

So, Bailey is a devotee of Milton Friedman. Who wudda thunk it?

  15. ===Obviously he is talking about COVID-19 related mandates===

The context of the question was clear. But why should COVID-19 mandates be different than other public health mandates?

  17. = I look forward to being allowed to smoke a gigantic, comical cigar =

Better if you bring a huge joint. If there’s any crowd that needs to mellow out, it’s Bailey’s event attendees.

  18. == Obviously he is talking about COVID-19 related mandates. But children always like to intentionally misread peoples statements.==

If he opposes mandates for a deadly contagious virus that spreads in large measure through asymptomatic carriers, what possible justification could there be for the myriad other health mandates that exist?

    Comment by SWIL_Voter Thursday, Aug 5, 21 @ 11:35 am

  19. Darren Bailey’s delivery in the video contains entirely too much whine and cheese. Bailey comes across not as a candidate for governor but as a television preacher destined to draw the audience to his beliefs.

Seems rigid, not open to compromise, and leans on emotion not logic. Again, he’s not ready for the big chair.

    Comment by Rudy’s teeth Thursday, Aug 5, 21 @ 11:36 am

  20. ==intentionally misread==

He’s against health mandates. What’s there to intentionally misread about that.

  23. One thing that stands out in the law and order crowd is privilege. They have plenty of laws and rules for their political opponents to follow, but they think they can pick and choose which ones to follow.

Comment by Grandson of Man Thursday, Aug 5, 21 @ 11:48 am

  24. What does he mean he “won’t fight a losing battle”? Seems to me that he and his buddy Devore have a lot of experience losing.

  25. === Obviously he is talking about COVID-19 related mandates. But children always like to intentionally misread peoples statements.===

Maybe you should go back and give his presser a listen. He did not limit his opposition to health mandate to COVID-19.

    Be an adult and listen.

Comment by JS Mill Thursday, Aug 5, 21 @ 11:53 am

  26. Elections are all about contrast. Yesterday Jim Durkin described Pritzker as being on a “power trip.” Dan McConchie said that Pritzker was “going it alone.” This all suggests that the legislative leaders wants to find some compromise solution. But their standard bearer has made it perfectly clear that he has no interest in that.

Comment by Pundent Thursday, Aug 5, 21 @ 11:56 am

  27. = Obviously he is talking about COVID-19 related mandates=

The pandemic is the worst public health crisis that I’ve ever experienced. If the argument is that Bailey only meant that he doesn’t agree with health mandates in a pandemic, exactly when would he support them?

Comment by Pundent Thursday, Aug 5, 21 @ 12:02 pm

  28. === Obviously he is talking about ===

I read his words, and I watched the full context of him saying those words coming out of his own mouth.

He is talking about all health mandates.

He said what he said, and he will predictably double down on it next.

Comment by TheInvisibleMan Thursday, Aug 5, 21 @ 12:02 pm

  29. I’m not sure how much the Governor’s mandate really matters. Mrs RNUG’s best friend has been in a nursing home the past 2 years. They only allowed visitors a short time early on; she hasn’t been able to visit for over a year. They problem is mostly being short staffed. But we know the nursing home wasn’t doing a good job before; her friend came down with covid in there.

So if you can’t visit, what does a mask mandate do?

That said, it’s hard to know what kind of opinion to have on covid etc. As Rich knows, I’ve been planning a small convention here if Springfield later this month. So I’ve been trying to stay on top of the guidance and rules and mandates The unfortunate truth is even the supposedly trusted sources keep changing their guidance. Everyone says to follow the science but the science really isn’t settled; the CDC is still learning about covid and the vaccines. We probably won’t have the science settled for several years. So you just have to make a judgement call and do what is, probably, beat for you and your family.

FWIW, we are both fully vaxed and do avoid crowds, etc. We’ll wear masks if the building rules require it, but we are living more or less normal lives.

Comment by RNUG Thursday, Aug 5, 21 @ 12:07 pm

  30. Guess Senator Bailey won’t get invited to this meeting.

Are you not real clear on what the words “any sort of” mean? They’re simple words forming a simple concept, must be above your comprehension level.

  33. ===So if you can’t visit, what does a mask mandate do?===

Protect against infections coming in via employees, contractors, delivery drivers, USPS, etc.?

Comment by Anyone Remember Thursday, Aug 5, 21 @ 12:33 pm

  34. =Everyone says to follow the science but the science really isn’t settled=

Because a large percentage of the country continues to ignore the science at every turn. We aren’t adapting to the science, it’s continually responding to our behavior. As a fully vaxed person you should be at a point where you can go about your normal life. The problem is we have too many that are un-vaxed. And the science and our response now changes to reflect that. It’s not science that is unsettling, it’s us. Science told us what to do. We didn’t all listen.

The miracle of science brought us to a point where we can now beat the virus. It’s up to us to decide whether or not we’re going to do that. Darren Bailey has no problem with letting the virus win.

If anything being a child myself, your statement makes his statements even more inane.

I might be in favor of medical mandates, but not specifically for the mitigation of COVID-19. Do you think that seems more rational? If anything the ‘libertarian argument is at least consistent and based on something. The idea of being against a mandate because COVID-19 is involved? So a TB test that is mandated for school is ok, but not for COVID-19?

Fine call me a child, but even a child can see that logic is malarky.

  40. Just imagine the shock of Dillard losing to Gomer

Comment by Annonin' Thursday, Aug 5, 21 @ 1:29 pm

  41. ===Obviously he is talking about COVID-19 related mandates.

Why is this obvious? He was insisting on knowing what is in the DNA of the MMR (MMA in how he said it) vaccine.

Of course, the MMR vaccine has no DNA because all three viruses are RNA viruses and it is an attenuated virus vaccine.

He appears to be no health mandate period curious at a minimum. The man is not bright, don’t try and make him sound reasonable.

Comment by ArchPundit Thursday, Aug 5, 21 @ 1:54 pm

  42. If you’re wondering if Bailey supports other vaccines, please understand he has been an anti-vaxer before this. In 2016 or 2017, if I recall correctly, Rich posted something from Bailey’s Facebook page with false claims about the measles vaccine.

  44. My Fellow Edgar, so between the clear language of his response, the 2019 CapFax post and Bailey’s comment from the other day that speed limit laws are just “advice” you want to keep on saying that Bailey was only talking about the COVID rules? It’s quite obvious that Mr. “law and order” is really just a convenient libertarian, i.e., just ignore the things they want to ignore. The problem with that is when you start going down that road it gets pretty ridiculous because at this point Bailey is saying that there should be no restaurant inspections, tough luck if you get E.coli or salmonella and enjoy that mice droppings in your burger.

  47. What the voters really get with this type of do nothing politician is the ability to be the master of their own little skull-sized kingdom…but its easy to instead form a mindless cocoon, devoid of nuance, and full of dogmatic ideas of permanence and righteousness.

You have to at least attempt to indoctrinate some modicum of loyalty to obviously beneficial behaviors…not to is to hand our fate to the wandering whims of the collective. Those that perceive any societal pressure to conform as a personal affront to their being only highlight the tragic “Autonomous and self-confident” condition that has doomed 99% of sentient animals to an inglorious extinction.
