The material, if anything, is based on what Bob Hope would have done 20-30 years ago. If we believe that Bob Hope is cancelable, I’m really concerned about our country. Bob Hope was a comedian who was able to gently rib, you know, all parties and all people, whether it was Lyndon Johnson, or Richard Nixon or John F Kennedy, or George HW Bush. Bob Hope was an American first, and he gently ribbed those who were in power.

“…..a window peeper threw up on her windowsill.” Yep, ‘gentle ribbing’, him and Bob Hope. “Hey, did you hear about…..”; “How about that Nancy Pelosi…”; “Now some people say….”; “In fact, some people say….:”. “And then there’s…..”. Real smooth dude, like listening to a semi grinding through all the gears. Overall, the purpose seemed to be a “….but PLEASE don’t ignore me” thing. He got that right, at least for a while.

Strange that Chuckles McGee from Sangamon county talked more about Bob Hope than his own “comic stylings”.
But hey, keep it comin’ GOP, you’ve got me in stitches.

Your new GOP folks. Say offensive things and then act offended when called out on it. When you’ve given up on governing this is all you’ve got.
Comment by Pundent Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 6:44 am
Old enough to remember when Arnold Schwarzenegger was the second coming for the GOP.
Also, commenting on a powerful woman’s age and looks is going to reap what in those suburbs?
Comment by Flyin' Elvis'-Utah Chapter Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 6:45 am
First, you are not Bob Hope.
Second, there are ways to roast people that do not involve shaming and attacking whole categories of people.
Some of this is funny. But some is offensive. Learn the difference, and you too can be an effective comedian.

“If you haven’t got any charity in your heart, you have the worst kind of heart trouble.” –Bob Hope
Let’s hope IL & Sangamon GOP retire Emcee Paulie Pal after yesterday’s performance.

Am I the only one who didn’t think Bob Hope was funny?
Comment by Telly Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 7:10 am
I saw Bob Hope. And you, Paul, are no Bob Hope.
It’s a fine line between roasting public figures and just tossing off cheap insults. But this is where we are now in a hyper partisan political world. Your audience was full of anger and hate and frustration and you made a judgement call to play to that, and I’m very disappointed by that choice. When I see you next time at church, I’m going to look at you very differently from now on.

Welp, you sucked all the oxygen of Republican Day by thinking being vile and tasteless is a trait of Bob Hope.
To really grasp the “old, angry, rural, white” vibe… you reference a man who’s been dead for… 18 years.
Those who were born when Bob Hope died… can *now* vote.
If anything, this alleged “acceptable” comedy shows how out of touch, how the party is tone deaf, and how far this party needs to go to be relevant… when it lets the in-law uncle feel tasteless jokes work, and *thinks* he’s an iconic comedian… of pre-baby boomers.
Whew.
As I said yesterday;
Not a soul stopped the jokes, not a one disavowed the “comedian”…
Tracy already told me… in his remarks after becoming Chair
===So, whatever your political leanings, wherever you live - if you want to fight corruption, restore fiscal sanity, grow our economy, and stand for law and order - you’re on our team. It’s time to suit up, work together, and bring home some wins for the people of Illinois.”===
So we can add tasteless jokesters to racists, insurrectionists, and conspiracy theorists.
See, they’re telling us who they are. I’m not shocked that the “set” was at minimum “tasteless”… talk to an “in-law” uncle or check his “Facerbooker” or “instagramering”
They love these jokes, you love your favorite aunt.
What a total disgrace of a party function
Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 7:50 am
Does anyone under the age of 50 even know who Bob Hope was? These guys are so living in the past.
Comment by Henry Francis Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 8:04 am
The difference between Paul Palazzolo and Bob Hope. When Bob Hope told joke remotely like that they were about his friends. Uncle Pauly was insulting people with his jokes then trying to use the old well Bob Hope used to do it.
Nobody is buying what you’re selling Palazzolo.
Comment by Club J Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 8:04 am
Bob Hope didn’t make fun of the way people looked. This guy is an embarrassment to the GOP. He should just apologize but instead he doubles down. This is what Trump has done to the party. They’ll be in the minority forever with this attitude.
Comment by Just Me 2 Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 8:06 am
I found his “old, angry, white, rural” defense at its most glaring here;
===…whether it was Lyndon Johnson, or Richard Nixon or John F Kennedy, or George HW Bush.===
We all can argue here the words and acceptance or even how this is NO WAY a Bob Hope set… but…
… the man referenced four dead presidents… as targets of comedy of a man… who’s been dead… for 18 years.
Think on *that*
The comedian isn’t even relevant to his own rationale… of today.
This is why your in-law uncle doesn’t pontificate unless your favorite aunt isn’t around.
Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 8:12 am
Sadly Paul has turned into a caricature of what anyone who has spent time in Springfield knows old, angry, entitled, white man, SHG, Sangamon Co GOP’er only the world/state has moved on outside of his little bubble. And they wonder why no one wants to come back to Springfield after they have seen the Lincoln sites.
Comment by Annon3 Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 8:24 am
If we really have to go back to 1940-1950s comedians with “bite”…
If you listen to a Jack Benny or Bob Hope, arguably for their time the elite… two major things existed;
1) the other punchlines to targets was the self-deprecating comedy so it was about them, Benny or Hope.
2) both allowed targets to be “in on the jokes”, allowing the best retort zinger aimed at Benny and Hope.
Similar to the overall, but both got to both points differently.
The comedian yesterday was about Facebook anger and covering his bombing by pointing at himself… for sympathy… while pointing to himself… for tasteless comparison too.
I hadn’t thought of Jack Benny or Bob Hope in years… but… “Thanks ILGOP”

>is based on what Bob Hope would have done 20-30 years ago
He isn’t wrong: try 50 years ago:
Bob Hope was the establishment. Bob Hope was friends with Nixon. Bob Hope was speaking in favor of the [Vietnam] War. Bob Hope was expressing that kind of backward, suburban, WASP view of minorities, homosexuals, the women’s movement. Even his comments on the women’s movement were very condescending. He did a special in the ’70s on the women’s movement and it was so silly, so backward. And [in his act] the woman who had some big political office was dusting the chairs in between her meetings. It was just awful. He got mail … from feminists.

Moved on? He’s in the mainstream of the party that is very close to establishing permanent minority rule in this county.
Comment by Earnest Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 8:34 am
Didn’t notice any statement of condemnation from ILGOP leadership. They seem to be resigned to the fate of having the Trump base as voters and super minority status. That appeared evident with the statement against impeaching Trump for the insurrection.

Comment by lake county democrat Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 8:57 am
Odd that he cited Bob Hope when his inspiration was clearly Trump. This is the kind of stuff Trump would regularly deliver to cheering crowds between complaining about conspiracies and downplaying failures. Clearly, the GOP is not moving on.

“Never believe that republicans are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The republicans have the right to play.
They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.”

My impression of today’s GOP is that it’s a party bereft of any ideas that only wants to obstruct and insult their political opponents. Yesterday was an opportunity to dispel that notion. They doubled down.

Republican day (an irrelevant event) at the State Fair (an irrelevant event) and a dumb speech to boot.
we’re about to get slammed like texas with the Delta variant. The State Fair shouldn’t even be going on this year, it’s a super spreader event.
Also, JB doesn’t care if people make fun of his weight. He’s got more of a spine then that, so no one needs to feel bad for him. He’s a responsible, fully formed adult and a strong leader. let’s give him credit for that

Forget about being cancelled for PC culture or whatever Palazzolo is claiming, he should be cancelled because his ‘routine’ is what is getting attention instead of the Republican speakers. Comment by EssentialStateEmployeeFromChatham Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 10:40 am
Yesterday was not a roast event. When those happens, the subject of the roast is there and in on the joke. And the jokes at a roast aren’t mean spirited because the person saying them has a good opinion of the person overall.
I’m also annoyed with Republicans that want to go back decades to find something that justifies their current behavior. Whether it’s Bob Hope or telling me that they were the party that voted for xyz 50-100 years ago, It’s not who they are now.
I’m looking toward the future. How are you going to behave in 2021, 2022 and beyond? Your recent past ( including this week) tells me all I need to know about that.

=Is it too late to cancel the DuQuoin fair?=
Vaccines are now available and we know that they work particularly as it pertains to serious illness and injuries. Now maybe we should be limiting attendance to people who can prove they’re vaccinated or can show a negative test, but the days of cancelling things are waning. And if the state fair is a super spreader, how do we justify Major League Baseball or the NFL holding large events?
Events aren’t spreading the virus, unvaccinated people are.

About half of that was funny, the other half pretty offensive. Just Bacon and brunch, funny. Pelosi peeper, really offensive, etc. But really, why the jokes at all? Not the time, not the place, not the right image to project. Where was the passion for achieving the party’s goals. Beyond firing Just Bacon, what are those goals? You know, the vision thingy.

=Beyond firing Just Bacon, what are those goals? You know, the vision thingy.=
I guess you missed the last four years. Insults are all the rage within the GOP right now. Palazzolo was giving them what they want. And not a single member of the ILGOP has stepped forward to say that he doesn’t speak for the party. Because it’s what the base wants. The question is why would a party be content with a base that’s not large enough to win a meaningful race in this state? Maybe Durkin or McConchie can enlighten me on that point. Or maybe they’re going to follow Tracy’s lead and claw their way back one dogcatcher at a time. They certainly have the whistle for it.
