Gov. J.B. Pritzker on Friday endorsed ethics legislation that aims to take on Illinois’ pervasive culture of political corruption, but used his amendatory veto power to return it to the legislature to correct what he said was a confusing “technical drafting error” that prevented him from signing it into law.
“Passing real, lasting ethics reform was a top priority of mine going into the 2020 legislative session, and I’m pleased to move forward with an ethics package that includes a number of meaningful changes,” Pritzker said of the measure. […]
But Pritzker said a small provision “confuses and interferes” with the “clear authority” of the executive inspector general’s office to conduct investigations into wrongful conduct. He rewrote the measure to delete the provision.
It will take a simple majority of lawmakers to approve of Pritzker’s change when they reconvene for the fall veto session in October. But his actions could spur greater efforts among groups opposing the package who had sought a total veto in favor of tougher legislation.

It’s a bit too technocratic for me to really weigh into the merits of his AV.
But to be entirely cynical, I’d rather he not waste his political capital and relationships on ethics legislation that’ll never be much stronger than it is now, than all the other things we need to get done.

Re-write to do right? I don’t think we want to go through that again.
I agree with the Governor’s action. Nothing stopping the GA from going further.

As is the prerogative of any governor, he did what was afforded to him to this legislation.
The rest is on the legislature.

We agree with Mr/Ms Cannonball. Bill should have been signed. Most clear thinking people already know nearly all of the corruption now being prosecuted or promoted by Trum DOJ holdovers are either already crimes or not a crime in any form.

As long as you don’t have to disclose familial relationship for family members who live in a separate address, the concept of ethics in this State is a joke

Voted agree for the same reason as JSMill @3:10pm–don’t let perfect be the enemy of good.
Minor change that shouldn’t be an obstacle to approval, whereas wider changes or an outright veto would have left us with no progress (however small).

I personally would have liked to see a wider AV. A total veto isn’t really an option in this case. Regardless, the current AV does allow the Governor to demonstrate that he would like to see something more aggressive.
