President Joe Biden has been sending a steady stream of emissaries to Illinois in person and virtually to showcase efforts to address climate change, education policies and child care initiatives. And Biden himself will be in Illinois Wednesday highlighting Covid-19 mandates that work.
“I think there is a certain part of the Biden administration that looks at Illinois and says ‘Here are a lot of things we’d like to accomplish that are getting done at the state level and they’re popular and successful.’ So it’s a good place to go and point out that the pieces of our agenda that the White House is trying to get passed actually work,” Anne Caprara, Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s chief of staff, told Playbook.

I wonder if he will take questions? For example, when are you introducing legislation to eliminate the depletion allowance tax deductions by fossil and nuclear fuel companies? Does space tourism hurt ‘decarbonization’ efforts?

In the context of a large state, we do seem to be making headway with Covid overall. And the mandates, at least on paper, are the right way to go. So they will send a good message (despite the relatively few examples of organizational resistance).
As to climate change, it is hard to go anywhere in Illinois and not be overwhelmed by the number of wind turbines, so that is a plus for Illinois as well. However, I think the “target date for the end of coal fired plants is a bit too far out (2040?) to be considered a good signal.

Is it bad that the first thing I google when I see the president will be in the state is to make sure he will not be in Springfield because I do not want to deal with the traffic issues?
It’s an opportunity for some good press for the president and an opportunity for the president to be embraced by a sitting governor despite his approval ratings dropping. Pritzker doesn’t have to worry about being associated with a president with lower approval ratings because Pritzker is basically running unopposed and we get some good national press. It’s a win all the way around.

Illinois is a model for Democrats. We are leaders in this sense. We are leaders on climate and social equity, though we just started and have big kinks to work out of marijuana dispensary licensing.
The DPI can overcome intra-party differences enough to unite and enact major legislation, something national Democrats really need to accomplish for Biden’s domestic agenda. If they don’t, why should voters feel motivated to support them? That should weigh very heavily on them.
The ILGOP will keep serving up the same thin soup of talking points like cutting spending and taxes, less government, more freedom, without offering much if anything concrete. They are not “change” people.

As a Chicago resident, I always found it interesting how quickly and cleanly CPD got Obama through the city when he came back home. Yeah it occasionally meant rolling closures on the expressway, but for the vast majority of residents, there was no impact at all.

guess it makes financial backers here happy. but he’s got this state so why not tout successes elsewhere? also, there’s lots about Illinois that does NOT translate well nationally so the answer to whatever Biden says is Lori Lightfoot & murders.

Rising gun violence seems to be a factor in all the cities across the US. If anyone can find the magic key to stop it, without massive violations of civil rights or imprisoning an entire generation of young men, I think Biden would be visiting that place, too.
It could be the violence interruption that we have just re-started in IL could be that key, but it’s too soon to tell. Or maybe another region will try something that works. States as (freqently Dr. Frankenstein’s) laboratory and all.

That Politico article has a blurb about Nancy Pelosi working hard to prop up Danny Davis against a challenge by Justice Dems.
The piece doesn’t really specify their policy objection to Davis but sure would be nice if both 80-year-olds could finally let go of power and do the right thing and retire.
Also always voted against Davis when I lived in his district because I was grossed out by him being in that whole Moonie ceremony thing back in the oughts.

This is a good point. The energy bill is a pretty good example of that. The progressives mostly sided with the greens while moderate Dems stuck with the unions. It took a while, but they eventually found middle ground. Would be nice if the DC Dems could hash it out.

Yes, there are good things happening in IL with our response to COVID and passage of the energy bill. I’m hoping what the Legislature passed on energy holds without a lot of changes down the road. It may be premature to think of us as model.

Don’t think Biden runs. I don’t buy the senility arguments but he is and looks an acts old. Even older in person. And being president ain’t east. Harris proven to be not quite ready for prime time. Agree Guv. needs to focus on 2022 but nobody that has that job doesn’t think they can be president
