* Dave Dahl…
As reporters in Springfield Tuesday tried to pin down Gov. JB Pritzker on whether he’ll try to repeal the state’s Parental Notification Act, U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) launched a passionate argument to repeal it.
Abortion rights advocates believe repealing PNA would be a good response to Texas’ anti-abortion laws. As for Duckworth, “Had I gotten pregnant at 16 or 17, I would have been one of those kids who lied to their parents if there were parental notification laws, and I would have gotten an illegal abortion,” she said in Springfield Tuesday. “When you talk about parental notification, it sounds like a good idea, but it also puts those vulnerable young people – the ones who do not have good communications with their parents – in a very vulnerable place, where they have no other options.”
Abortion rights advocates in Illinois believe a repeal would be an appropriate response to, for example, new restrictions in Texas.
Lawmakers are back in town for veto session, which starts next week. Pritzker says a repeal would be up to lawmakers..
* What Pritzker said when asked and then pressed further…
I’m a lifelong pro-choice advocate. I believe in standing up for a woman’s right to choose. This is just one component, but a vital component of making sure that that right is available to all […]
I think I’m clear about it. I’m in favor of a woman’s right to choose. I’m in favor of repealing PNA. I don’t know whether the legislature will bring this up over the two weeks of veto session, but I have stood in favor of it since I was elected. In fact long before that, when my mother had me marching in favor of a woman’s right to choose back in the 1970s.

Good on JB.
Sen Duckworth’s comments were even stronger coming from a place of understanding what a young woman might have to face down when dealing with a tough home situation and perhaps the unplanned pregnancy was the result of abuse by a family member.

I mean can you really press him on something he has no control over. He doesn’t call bills in the GA

Unfortunately, young women and minors remain an “easy target” for conservatives who are oddly obsessed with their control of female bodies. God forbid they actually interrogate their own philosophy and realize that the vast majority of women who seek abortions are in marriages or committed relationships. If they considered that for even a second they might realize the pain they’ve inflicted on countless women and child-bearing adults.

The more this is discussed, it’s not that in the end it will make Pritzker uncomfortable.
The more this is discussed the more times Republicans that voted against abortion are going to face questions about the Texas abortion law.
It’s not an accident Illinois Republicans, who have a deafening silence on the issue, will avoid abortion as best they can, but thinking Pritzker is in a “gotcha” here in a long term position, Personal PAC will be reminding voters how Republicans oppose abortion, heck, House Republicans literally “stood up” to oppose abortion as Bourne spoke on the House floor, bragged on “standing up”…
Pritzker can wait this out a bit now, watch how it rolls in the chambers.

OW, most Republican voters are either pro life or at least uneasy about eliminating PNA. These Reps are representing their constituents, hard to understand, I know.

=== These Reps are representing their constituents, hard to understand, I know.===
Nope. Not hard to understand.
You think the chambers are gonna be 60/30 Republican being pro-life in Illinois… like Texas abortion law pro-life?
Yeah, me neither.
You think a Republican nominee for governor is going to be so ardent pro-life they’ll embrace the Texas abortion law?
If they plan on discounting suburban women…
If this is difficult for you to grasp…

Democrats now stand for minor children’s right to choose
Who needs parents when you have Democrats running the Government?
They know what is best for your minor children

=== Democrats now stand for minor children’s right to choose===
“Republicans want to force children to have children, just like Texas”
If this was an easy lift for Republicans, we’d hear more Republicans howling about any abortion issue.

JB has been marching since the 70’s for minor Children’s right to an abortion without their parent’s consent?
Current Illinois law allows bypassing parental consent or notification with court permission.

I understand that there are children who do not have the type of relationship with their parents that would allow them to tell them about the pregnancy, or that the pregnancy could have been from incest. The problem I have with this is that I, as a parent, have to be present for my under-18 child to have a wellness physical, and it’s a Class A misdemeanor for anyone other than a person licensed to practice medicine in all branches to tattoo or offer to tattoo a person under age 18. It is also a Class A misdemeanor to allow a person under 18 years of age to remain on the premises where tattoos are being performed or offered without a parent or legal guardian. But they want to allow a minor, a child, to have a surgical procedure without the parent knowing? There needs to be some system better than what’s provided by PNA so a minor can have access to abortion services with some sort of adult oversight.

=== I, as a parent===
If you weren’t a parent it wouldn’t bother you one way or another?
How is your parental status an issue for anyone not your child?

There is a mirror side to this:
“The problem I have with this is that I, as a parent, have to be present for my under-18 child to have a wellness physical, and it’s a Class A misdemeanor for anyone other than a person licensed to practice medicine in all branches to tattoo or offer to tattoo a person under age 18. If that same minor were pregnant, they would be able to make every decision regarding said pregnancy independently. Every single decision, if she carries to term is a decision that requires no input from her parents EXCEPT whether that child wants to have a child. So yes, PNA is forcing children to bear children. Not to mention that no ban on abortion of any kind actually stops abortion. It just criminalizes it causing ripples and ripples of more damage along the way.

I think underage girls are more likely to either lie about their ages or try a home remedy than petition the court for permission to seek an abortion.
Comment by Cheryl44 Wednesday, Oct 13, 21 @ 1:06 pm
I am unabashedly pro-choice, and opposed to the PNA.
But let’s remember for a moment. Every pregnancy involves a boy or a man. Until we are prepared to punish males and assault the bodies of males as a result of pregnancy, then our moral outrage over abortion is sexist, and discriminatory.

So you *are* pro-choice, - Lucky Pierre -?
To the post,
If the idea is for Dems to be able to frame this as “Republicans want children to have children”, and attach the Texas abortion law currently on the books, it allows Pritzker to wait this out and see how Republicans are going to push back, which could be dicey with a very restrictive abortion law now on the books and a primary after the spring session will conclude.
Throw in new districts…
Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Oct 13, 21 @ 2:34 pm
@attislady, the vast majority of the procedures are not surgical, but rather medical abortions that are accomplished by taking two pills. There are other reasons you’re wrong, but @sideline watcher got most of them.

PNA is moot for the functional family with engaged parents in a food relationship with the daughter; they don’t need it. The girls in the dysfunctional setups generally can’t use it because the parents will beat her and worse, or, the dad or other relative violated her in the first place. So whom is this law really for, and is there equal representation under this law? It doesn’t work for most.

With the average age of the onset of menses being 12, you all are okay with a girl 12 or younger making this decision without any adult input?

Is it incest?
It’s rape, they’re 12.
You think a 12 year old should be held responsible for carrying a pregnancy to term?
Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Oct 13, 21 @ 6:28 pm
This is way overboard. I fully am pro choice but the judicial bypass is there to make certain children have an adult involved in making a decision with lifelong implications. Judges can consider all information, background, counselors recommendations-this bypass is precisely there to protect children.
