* The juggernaut continues…
Of 957,807 total weighted votes and 478,905 required for slating, Giannoulias got 526,273 weighted votes.

* Press release…
See below for a statement from Illinois Secretary of State candidate Anna Valencia on today’s Cook County Democrats slating, which resulted in an endorsement for her opponent, Alexi Giannoulias, in this race:
“Nothing worth doing comes easy in life. That’s the story of my parents, working families across Illinois and women across the country. Even so, when things get tough, they continue to fight on. I am in this race for them, and I am staying in the race because I plan to win so that I can be a voice for working families like my own and to show little girls everywhere what’s possible when they persist.”
…Adding… More…
All 3 Giannoulias rivals say they will stay in the race.

…Adding… Full slating list is here.

I really am not an Alexi fan for many reasons. Despite this, I have to hand it to the guy. He really has out-maneuvered the competition on every front in the primary. He may be the most vulnerable in the general, however.

Alexi has run circles around the others who think this race is like running for ward committeeman.
The GOP with $7-10 million and the right candidate can beat Alexi… if they want a statewide office.
The Dems slating Alexi is like folks whom are prisoners of the moment, and lack institutional knowledge… or don’t care about how Alexi *is and was*

So Dart and Kaegi were slated as a team? That is interesting I didn’t know they could do that. Did they figure Dart would pull Kaegi over or vice versa?
Comment by DuPage Saint Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 1:19 pm
separate the two
I wonder WHY someone wanted to do so? That is, which of the two wasn’t favored?
Comment by Fav Human Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 1:23 pm
What is Dart even doing? Cant believe he turned into such a sycophant to Preckwinkle. Time to hang it up buddy.

Probably the candidate that refused to take their insane pledge. More in the Trib today.

Did Cook Co. Dems also slate Newman given her reelection was “requested.”
Comment by Soo.... Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 1:32 pm
According to Alex Nitkin, Pat Dowell is going to reevaluate her campaign and weigh whether it makes sense to keep going.
Comment by the 647 Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 1:38 pm
Why does Newman need to be slated? The entire district requested her reelection and she called “dibs”.
Comment by West Side the Best Side Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 2:01 pm
Have yet to see a single reason why I should vote for alexi.
Comment by Huh? Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 2:07 pm
I just don’t get the Giannoulias thing and he will be the first Dem I won’t be voting for in the General since 2004.
Comment by Chicago Blue Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 2:10 pm
Great news for Alexi. Keep up the hard work.

All this talk about “did he or didn’t [Pritzker]” say he wuz running for prez cracks me up. I can still hear in my mind’s ear JB’s asking Blago to succeed Alexi as Treasurer if Giannoulias had gotten the nod for Obama’s senate seat.
In that alternative world, we could have had an earlier JB as governor, avoided Quinn and Rauner, and have Giannoulias as senator, standing medium-tall for Illinois, and no jail time for Blago.
Would that it were so.
Comment by Sharia Capo Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 2:16 pm
Alexi is head & shoulders above that gaggle. This is politics. No perfect candidate.
Valencia is battling for relevancy. D. Moore has nothing to lose so he can run a guilt-free campaign. Dowell, is leaning correct: She should dip.
Comment by A Gray Mans. Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 2:18 pm
OW, what do you mean by “is and was”? I like the cut of Alexi’s jib, his command of the office and his bearing.

===… what do you mean by “is and was”? I like the cut of Alexi’s jib===
Bring a prisoner of the moment without knowing who Alexi is and where he’s from… and what his bank and the associations around it…
You like the cut of a jib with that history?
“Ok”

Every time I get concerned that the Cook County Democratic Party may turn the corner on the corruption issue (and by association, their current and former elected leaders), they reward my concern with slating a guy like Alexi. Between Broadway and Rezko, et al, this guy doesn’t have a skeleton in his closet, he’s got a graveyard in his back yard.
Idle speculation, wouldn’t it be interesting if Pat Fitzgerald were to run as an R?
Comment by Just Another Anon Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 2:41 pm
I haven’t voted for a Republican since the last time Alexi was running statewide, and then, was one of the MANY democrats who split their tickets and elected Obama & Kirk. The last years have brought a lot of change to the Republican party and I have to be honest, I never, ever thought that I would EVER vote for any Republican ever again, given the moral, logical, etc. failings in the last few years. But I will vote for a Republican over Alexi. My only hope is that when Alexi loses AGAIN, the party will, for the love of god, stop putting him up.
Comment by Anon Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 3:11 pm
Still shaking my head over why this guy would get slated when his political baggage is going to drag the ticket down with him in the general. With that said, a candidate doesn’t need the party any more to win a primary. It helps, but not getting it is no longer a death sentence. Dowell and Valencia should ride this out.
Comment by Shytown Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 3:32 pm
Alexi has run circles around this field. Seemingly every week he announces a new endorsement, policy proposal or fundraising goal met and every week the commenters here whine. Reading these comments sustains me, please keep it up.
Comment by The Captain Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 3:57 pm
Didn’t it seem like at this time exactly 18 years ago that Blair Hull was riding high in the Democratic U.S. Senate field? Similar to Alexi with SOS now. Of course, we all know how the Hull campaign fared three months later.

So you feel better the more phony that goes in and accepted that is Alexi?
Huh.
The big piece (Jesse’s endorsement) is still out there.
We’ll see how that goes.
Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 3:59 pm
Congrats to Alexi! Looks like he will get the AFL-CIO endorsement, too.
Comment by Warrior Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 4:27 pm
OW, what could be taking Jesse’s endorsement so long. I am thinking safety for the army that he is responsible for, a deal should be struck soon. I really thought Anna Valencia would make some early noise, but these Key endorsements are running out.

Every day closer to Election Day, but far enough to have serious cache is probably a reason. Once it’s done, it’s done. The primary is months away, not weeks away, and no petitions have been filed yet.
Maybe the month of May might be a better timed endorsement?
I was making note it’s still out there, and in part it’s still a race, “maybe”, until that drops?
Nothing *really* impressive from the other camps, that I know.
Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 4:51 pm
what Shytown said. the baggage is real.

To another point too?
Make no waves, back no losers.
That’s a big point.

==what could be taking Jesse’s endorsement so long.==
Speaking of Jesse, no matter who wins what will his key staff do if the Dems still retain SOS next November? Will Alexi or Anna keep Benigno and Co. on staff or will they likely retire?

Considering that he’s a product of the Cellini-Kjellander combine, that’s a no-brainer.

Not me. Alexi is the only reason I even took a Democratic ballot in the 2006 primary.

It’s only interesting to the point Rod Blagojevich identifies as a Trumpkin.
That’s where we are.

I kid, I kid… maybe.

OW- Jesse White’s and Durbin are the two biggest endorsements left in my opinion, don’t think any candidate want one from JB or Lightfoot. Durbin has always supported Alexi, but AV was his Campaign Manager…agree, no reason for either to come out before June unless it’s to unify the party and save Alexi’s war chest for the GOP
