* I told subscribers about this earlier, but Teresi is another Grif Ticket candidate…
McHenry County Auditor Shannon Teresi today launched her campaign for Illinois Comptroller. Teresi’s extensive experience in forensic auditing, creating transparency for taxpayers, and fighting corruption give her a sterling background to draw from to help right the ship of Illinois’ disastrous finances.
“Throughout my career, I have seen firsthand how important transparency is in the process of managing taxpayer dollars,” Teresi said. “That’s what I promise to bring to the office of Comptroller: open communication with the taxpayers and an eagle eye to root out the waste, fraud, and abuse our state is plagued by thanks to decades of Madigan Machine politics. Illinois needs a Comptroller with real financial experience, not a career politician controlled by the special interests. As an experienced CPA, auditor, and Certified Fraud Examiner, I have the experience to manage the state’s finances and crush corruption where and when it starts.”
Teresi has served McHenry County as Auditor since 2018 when she was appointed and subsequently elected twice, most recently in 2020 receiving nearly 75% of the vote.
As Auditor, Teresi led the charge to make good government reforms on behalf of the taxpayers. In addition to modernizing the audit process, making it accessible online to taxpayers and creating a system of accountability, she also implemented paperless systems for greater efficiency and cost savings. Teresi also instituted processes ensuring taxpayer dollars are being spent for the good of the county, not the personal benefit of its political leaders.
Prior to becoming McHenry County Auditor, Teresi worked in the Auditor’s office, tackling challenges to save time for county employees and ensuring taxpayer dollars were being spent wisely. She oversaw the County’s financial statements and government accounting. Teresi saw firsthand the amount of waste and inefficiency in county government and set out to correct that on becoming the county’s Auditor.
Teresi is a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Fraud Examiner, and a Certified Internal Auditor. Teresi brings years of private sector audit and tax experience having worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers. That time spent working with Fortune 500 companies on their auditing, financial reporting, and taxes helped inform Teresi’s work as County Auditor, where she successfully applied many of the practices to cut out waste from the county’s spending.
Teresi is a life-long McHenry County resident, where she currently resides with her husband, two sons, and dog.
* Meanwhile, here’s Greg Hinz…
With a reported push from hedge-fund mogul Ken Griffin, signs are growing that a statewide slate of GOP candidates that the party’s big funders are willing to back finally is close to coming together.
One development is state Rep. Tom Demmer, R-Dixon, announcing [yesterday] his candidacy for Illinois treasurer against incumbent Democrat Mike Frerichs.
The bigger news could occur any time, with multiple party sources saying they’ve heard that Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin will be getting into the governor’s race, with Griffin’s support. […]
Griffin’s spokeswoman said she is not aware of any pending big announcements.
* Rep. Tim Butler alluded to the joint effort earlier today on Sam Madonia’s show, pointing out that SoS candidate John Milhiser and Rep. Demmer were on the same slate.
* And while we’re on this topic, here’s Marni Pyke…
Suburban Republicans are taking starring roles in what’s shaping up to be a bruising and boisterous primary election for a standard-bearer to challenge Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker.
For starters, Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin is expected to announce his candidacy for governor in the coming days.
Palatine Township Highway Commissioner Aaron Del Mar is running as lieutenant governor with Gary Rabine of McHenry County, a Schaumburg business owner who is seeking to be the next governor.
And, McHenry County Board Vice Chairwoman Carolyn Schofield will team with gubernatorial hopeful and former state Sen. Paul Schimpf of Monroe County as a candidate for lieutenant governor.
*** UPDATE *** Comptroller Mendoza…
I welcome all candidates and look forward to talking about my lengthy and historic record of accomplishments as Comptroller on behalf of taxpayers with voters in all 102 counties of our great state of Illinois. Through smart financial management and fiscal discipline coupled with tenacious perseverance, I’ve successfully navigated our state through unprecedented fiscal challenges.
As Illinois’ fiscal watchdog, I’ve implemented historic transparency reforms, led our state to its first credit upgrades in decades, delivered the fastest vendor payment cycle in over 20 years, and paid down our bill backlog by over 75% without using federal stimulus funds - in the middle of a global pandemic.
When Illinois voters chose me in 2016 and 2018, they elected a strong, battle tested, proven leader who knows how to get things done. There is no challenge that I will not rise up to for Illinois. I will continue working hard to earn the votes and confidence of every voter across the state, regardless of their political party, and I look forward to the work that has yet to be done
…Adding… Teresi and Milhiser are both using Chain Bridge Bank, which was founded by former US Sen. Peter Fitzgerald and is favored by GOP types in DC. They also both have the same campaign treasurer, Les Williamson of The Larrison Group, a “boutique political consulting firm” in Georgetown that does GOP fundraising.
…Adding… DPI…
Democratic Party of Illinois Executive Director Abby Witt released the following statement regarding the latest candidate announcement from the Ken Griffin ticket:
“We’ve seen this before, haven’t we? In 2016, Bruce Rauner‘s handpicked comptroller candidate was roundly rejected by voters after helping the ‘worst Republican governor in America’ drive the state’s finances into a ditch. Now, Ken Griffin is running the Rauner Reboot, revealing his slate of puppets in a desperate bid to pull Illinois back to the Rauner days of budget impasses and months-long bill backlogs.
“Thankfully, Illinois voters elected Susana Mendoza to fight the Rauner agenda during his disastrous term in office and re-elected her to help clean up the financial mess Rauner left behind. Now, we’re balancing our budget, actually paying our bills on time, and upgrading our credit for the first time in decades.
“No matter who Ken Griffin picks for his latest political game, Illinois voters won’t be fooled — the Rauner Reboot is destined to be a flop.”
…Adding… ILGOP’s Joe Hackler…
“Susanna Mendoza has never been qualified to be comptroller, just to be another corrupt insider politician capitalizing on her relationships with the Machine to advance herself at the expense of Illinois families. Mendoza received huge contributions from Danny Solis (indicted), got married at the home of Ed Burke (indicted), and has been repaid her debts to Mike Madigan (resigned in disgrace, indictment looming) for advancing her career by endorsing JB Pritzker. Mendoza is just another part of the corrupt circle of politicians Illinois Democrats have elevated to state office, and exactly why we need a competent, qualified comptroller to take her place”

Very good choice but this will be a very difficult race for the Republicans because Mendoza is a fierce campaigner.
Comment by Long Time Independent Wednesday, Jan 12, 22 @ 10:36 am
McHenry County Auditor Shannon Teresi is a solid, genuine candidate for Republican primary voters.
And thus far, McHenry County Board Vice Chairwoman Carolyn Schofield is the best choice for lieutenant governor by any of the four major declared candidates for governor, and Paul Schimpf should be commended for picking Schofield.
Comment by John Lopez Wednesday, Jan 12, 22 @ 10:37 am
Mendoza ain’t Frerichs, she will be tougher to go after and beat. The fiscal aspects and accomplishments by Mendoza will be tough to attack or make less.
To an overall of the post,
The Griffin Slate is different than any GOP thought during the Trumpkin Era.
Granted, it is very much so a slate that Rauner thinking (Griffin wants) could rally around very easily, but here’s the thing;
In context of Trump, ironically, Rauner/Griffin thinking is trying to save the GOP. If you aren’t a fan of a “Bailey”, you need to find “someone”. The statewide offices with the most opportunities to gain, can’t be Trumpkin cultists. Nope.
I find myself very torn, not in a feign way, but in a real bare bones honest way. It’s bigger than lesser of two evils, Raunerism or Trumpkins. It’s even bigger than these offices or races for them, it *is* trying to find a way back from a deeper abyss than Raunerism ever took a party, it’s an abyss ruining the entire way the Republuc can exist. For that, I’m first grateful that there will be options outside the Trumpkin cult. The rest will be about the races themselves.
The comptroller race is … “ok”… but the slate, SoS, Treasurer… statehouse… let’s see if isolating and taking down Trumpkins is possible.

A legit resume, but Mendoza has a lot of successes, and on the very things that Terisi talks about (Transparency, rooting out waste). And Terisi making Madigan so central to her announcement is…not ideal.

“Mendoza is a fierce campaigner”
I use to believe that too….until that disastrous Mayor’s race. I was certain she would make the runoff….right up until the results came in and she finished in 5th place. I mean she literally came in behind Willie Wilson….Oof!
Comment by Raising Kane Wednesday, Jan 12, 22 @ 10:49 am
“crush corruption”?
Maybe I missed it, but I didn’t see any examples in her announcement of her doing this. Also, is there corruption in the Controller’s office? I didn’t see any examples in her announcement (I guess mentioning Madigan attempts to do this?).
On her LinkedIn page she doesn’t list her undergraduate education. But she does list her masters degree in Accounting from NIU (where apparently she played intramural tennis)
Is she just a less experienced (and presumably less offensive) Munger? I think Mendoza’s record as Controller will be thought to beat.
Comment by Henry Francis Wednesday, Jan 12, 22 @ 10:57 am

=== And Terisi making Madigan so central to her announcement is…not ideal. ===
Full reference was “Madigan Machine Politics”, and in McHenry County when Teresi became auditor, that was during the tumultuous term of then-McHenry County Board Chairman Jack Franks, a part of the Madigan Machine.
Also, Mendoza didn’t make it out of the primary in Chicago mayoral race of 2019…and which tainted alderman was Mendoza tied to?
Hint, his wife officiated the Mendoza wedding.
Comment by John Lopez Wednesday, Jan 12, 22 @ 11:02 am
Most of Mendoza’s “fiscal successes” are due to actions by the General Assembly, the Governor, and the federal government. She’s very good at claiming credit, but this cycle everyone will be vying for the credit.

I suspect that this candidate would argue that the Comptroller can attack corruption in other parts of state government? I imagine Mendoza would say she did just that with her Truth in Hiring Law.

Incumbency has its own… literary license?
My criticism, or better, critique, to the Mendoza release is about keeping it within the framework of what that campaign wants to talk about. Frerichs is ferreting out bills and such that then needed nuance?
In the context of my comment, that’s my take.
Still, this slate intrigues me more and more to what is being built, and what exactly they’ll need to beat in a primary.
Fair?

==I didn’t realize the Comptroller was responsible for the actions of GOMB and the entire General Assembly. ==
Well, first of all, many of the things Mendoza listed actually aren’t in the GA or GOMB’s purview. The GA doesn’t “implement” anything, that’s strictly executive branch talk. Only the Comptroller actually pays the vendors.
But for the things that the GA actually does…do we know that they don’t listen to Executive branch officials when they do it? State government is highly collaborative, after all, and the Comptroller specifically, well, she cuts their checks, so…I doubt she gets ignored?

My first thought exactly. Mendoza’s release was all class, “I welcome the discussion”, proud of her record, etc.
Frerichs’ release was more like “Demmer’s bad because he didn’t vote for my bills.. Except he did, but no, it didn’t count, even though I touted the bill he voted for, I mean…”
I’ll say it again, there is no emptier suit than Frerichs.

The Comptroller can push the legislature by working with committees, writing bill language, rounding up sponsors (and votes). The Comptroller can also shine a bright light on things that are messing up the fiscal house. The Comptroller can choose which bills to pay first and can leverage payments to ensure matching funds from the Feds are maximized. Mendoza has been doing all of those things since she got into the office.
The office-holder can be active or passive; Mendoza has been very active. It’s difficult to imagine a better Comptroller. On top of all that, she is an excellent communicator.

This is a structural issue for the Republicans. After having so many tough elections, especially in the suburbs, they just don’t have a great pool to pick from. Well I guess they do so at their own peril. But much like the ILGOP resurrecting Mike Madigan the Dems must think it’s an effective strategy. And the former governor did get trounced in a historic manner.
But it’s all largely academic until the primaries are behind us. The challenge for the Griffin slate will be emerging victorious from a primary AND giving the base a reason to come out and vote in the general while expanding their reach into the burbs. You’ve got 11 months to pull it all off. Seems like a tall order.

==for a career office jumper==
And sorry that the facts don’t support you here, either, but Mendoza was a state rep for 10 years, city clerk for 5 years, and has been Comptroller for 5 years. The Auditor, meanwhile, was appointed to a county office four years ago and is now jumping- or trying to, at least- to a different office.
The only real difference between the two is that the voters have elected Mendoza more.
But I get it- you don’t like Mendoza, so everything she’s done is bad, and if someone you do like has done the same thing, you’ll pretend to find some reason to think that they’re different.

If your problems with Mendoza translated to Illinois voters as a whole she likely would be in trouble. But there’s a reason that the GOP currently does not hold a single statewide office.
