  1. Can we get a few more degrees, please? Teens would be a relief. Twenties would be grand. Above freezing would be an absolute dream (banned punchtuaction). Thankful the roads are dry and we’re almost through January. Days are getting longer. The sun is shining.

    Wishing everyone a good day.

  2. After last night’s win, the Fighting Illini can be temporarily renamed the Surviving Illini after blowing the big leads but still managing to win by one.

  3. I know we’re all sick of it, but this week I had to bury a 50y.o. unvaccinated friend without other risk factors from Covid who leaves behind a spouse and 4 kids.

If you’re not gonna get the shot, then please at least consider giving yourself a bit of space from other people or even better wear a mask around them. I promise you, his kids will wish he did for the rest of their lives.

  4. I only caught the 7-7:30 portion of the show this morning (I’ll check to see if the rest gets saved online later), but Madonia’s show on 1450 during that half-hour this morning sounded like a pre-funeral for the State Journal-Register. With about 3 former SJR staffers on talking about their times at the paper (and how “good they had it” under Copley ownership), and lamenting about how Gatehouse and Gannett have deteriorated the paper. Sam hinted that other former SJR people might have been interviewed at other parts of the show this morning.

  5. Saw that Shia Kapos at Playbook attended the Aurora City Council meeting last night to see how constituents reacted to Irvin running. Nothing truly interesting came of it, but it brings up how the Mayors running for higher office could be confronted outside of planned campaign events.

  6. Loyola with a nice win over SIU last night. looks like another tournament team this year. but probably don’t have enough size to get past the round of 32. Still fun to watch

  7. Two more friends have COVID this week. One a nurse, one a teacher, both successful dodgers of the virus since pandemic onset. Both also properly vaxxed and boosted and not doing too badly, though I found out Omicron can give you a terrible backache.

  8. The SJR has been on life support for years. It’s pretty much a zombie that doesn’t know it. Which is really sad if you remember the Journal, the Register, and the Sun.

But they pretty much did it to themselves with their all over the place non-transparent pricing that had you paying as much as $80 and your neighbor paying $35 or less for the same product. And most the stories are two days old with not much local news except sports. Now they are cutting out Saturday delivery. Don’t know why I keep taking it except I do like doing the puzzles on paper and don’t like the online interface.

  9. Today is a glorious anniversary for Chicago and our state, 36 years ago, 01/26/86. Let us go about this day with quiet reverence and appreciation.

  10. If you have any non-owned stray cats or dogs who you see hanging around your place it would be a blessing to put out some extra food for them this morning. It is brutally and dangerously cold for them at these temperatures.

  11. Delta dental finally paid my dentist for work done in July 2020. 18 months. Maybe delayed because of the state backlog, and maybe Delta had offices closed because of Covid, or some of their people quit and they can’t find replacements? I don’t know, but there is room for improvement.

  12. @Responsa, nice comment about the cats. anyone inclined to provide them with warmth straw— NOT hay—is quite useful.

  13. ==Today is a glorious anniversary for Chicago and our state, 36 years ago, 01/26/86==

Followed by tragedy two days later, and for especially younger Gen Xers, basically the equivalent of what the JFK assassination was for their parents and other Baby Boomers.

  14. I’ve seen some states are blocking transplants if people are not vaccinated (NY and Massachusetts being the ones I read today). Is anyone aware of any Illinois hospitals invoking this policy?

  15. Late to this morning thread, but Bolingbrook’s board voted to allow cannabis sales within the township and town.

  16. State agencies still denying Immunocompromised workers permission to work from home even though they have done so successfully since March 2002.

  17. It hasn’t aired in Springfield yet but I’m seeing early buzz about a big surprise on Jeopardy today. Not going to say anything more especially before people see the show in central Illinois.
