Obviously this isn’t Illinois-related (unless an Illinois team plays them), but is it just me or does anyone else also think that Gonzaga is the epitome of Overrated every year?

Good morning, especially Kansas, Providence, Iowa State and Miami players, coaches, fans, and all who will be enjoying the Midwest Region Championship in beautiful Chicago, a city that can host a regional championship but doesn’t have the facility to host a Final Four or a Super Bowl.
Please enjoy the city, there will be people who will talk down Chicago but apparently they can’t find a way to leave, or worse, grift off the idea of talking down Chicago then purposely move to the city, without any self awareness.
Anywho, I’m celebrating Chicago as a host, it’s great for the city, hopefully some great basketball, and some even greater revenues generated from our out of town guests.

the President himself mentioned in the SOTU speech that insulin should be capped at $35 a vial. In light of that, I dont understand why this legislation didnt go anyplace. Not even assigned to a commitee? This bill would literally save lives of people who have type 1 diabetes through no fault of their own.

Plastics, Plan B for the fossil fuel industry, need to be dealt with. Just look at how much plastic we all use. Most of it will never biodegrade, and its not recyclable. We’re fouling our own nest.

“doesn’t have a facility to host a Final Four or Super Bowl”
Maybe when they relocate Aaron Rodgers second home to the burbs they’ll get the latter.
Comment by Flyin' Elvis'-Utah Chapter Friday, Mar 25, 22 @ 8:20 am
A lot of plastics can be mad with corn, but if Ukraine/Russia lasts a long time world will need more food. USA (also Canada) are going to need to ramp up some kind of subsidy to encourage farmers to produce more (extra $$ can help marginal land be productive). That should be a bill that both parties can at least haggle over.
Comment by cermak_rd Friday, Mar 25, 22 @ 8:22 am
Oh forgot to make it IL centric, and that will help IL farmers especially in the central portion of the state.

The McCaskey family, that lil “mom and pop” shop worth multiple billions (again, with a B) would be extremely smart to make that building with a retractable roof, and configure it to go from 72,000 to 90,000+ to also accommodate college football playoff games or a national championship, even host a newly created college bowl game, in conjunction maybe without Great Lakes (Navy) or a corporate giant in Illinois as the host too…
… but… “here we are”
You’re so right. That much I know

== Obviously this isn’t Illinois-related (unless an Illinois team plays them), but is it just me or does anyone else also think that Gonzaga is the epitome of Overrated every year?==
A small Catholic school has built itself into a program that has been to 7 or 8 consecutive Sweet 16’s, more Final Fours than Duke the last 12 seasons, and more national championship games in the last 5 or so years than the Illini have been to in their entire existence. Overrated? I think you’re looking at the wrong school. It’s tough to win it all. Only one school and team in Illinois history has done it. But Gonzaga is up there with the best programs these days.
Comment by fs Friday, Mar 25, 22 @ 8:32 am
A domed stadium would be a huge economic boost IMO, grabbing more than just a few big games but also very large international conventions. Oh and add Duke and PU to the list I’d like to see lose as well, 2022 the year of the upset, Go Peacocks !

Iowa State and Kansas fans should flood the UC this weekend. It’s a shame that the Chicago area has not hosted a Super Bowl, Final Four, or Big Ten Football Championship. Maybe a new stadium will help alleviate some of that. And that Illinois loss to Houston is looking more respectable after the way Houston beat Arizona last night.

There’s *nothing* more “Chicago Catholic” then to have a spirited discussion about Jesuits, Dominicans, Franciscans, Benedictines, Carmelites…
It goes with the Chicago parishes and the high schools, and even the colleges.
I’ve yet to hear one say, “yeah, we’re the worst”, lol

“college football playoff games or a national championship”
I’ve attended football national championship games in Arizona, Florida and Indiana. The Indy event was negatively impacted by weather which precluded outside mingling tailgaters and NCAA sponsored social events surrounding the stadium.
I’d love for Chicago to host, but even with the domed stadium, it’s going to be tough to compete with those cities where fans can wear shorts to the game.
Just my perspective.

Of course you have, the “I know” aspect of your comment is chuckling for me.
If Minneapolis can host, if Indianapolis can host…
… Chicago *CAN* host.
Your anti-Chicago bias is showing.
Indianapolis, the home of the NCAA makes sure the city hosts and is in the rotation, no matter your leisurewear. “It’s about the dollars, always the dollars”
Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Mar 25, 22 @ 9:29 am
Does Dayton need to always have the First Four (play-in games) every year? Could a similar small-market Illinois city such as Peoria (Civic Center), Bloomington (Redbird Arena), or even UIUC bid for the First Four some year?

Just an FYI, you are most credible when you avoid the personal attacks and instead offer cogent, fact driven information.

… anti-Chicago bias be in play? Your argument against Chicago is “leisurewear” wholly ignoring the dollars that drive such decisions, and your anti-Chicago biases, like those in my first comment, are just that, driven on the “I know” silly.

A lot of fun today. That is sarcastic. Someone broke into my hotel room last night and stole my wallet and had fun with my credit card. Hotel is a decent one by O’Hare. They don’t have cameras in the hallways.
They took the key swipe cover off the door and manipulated the electronic lock.
I forgot to use the secondary lock on the door, so I failed there.
Be careful everywhere. I just heard another work mate had their company car solen too.

“anti-Chicago bias be in play?”
I’m not anti-Chicago. I do business in the city.
But they’ve got some clear challenges they need to address.
While Chicago leaders are expressing support for reducing funding for the police, and making excuses for looters masking as protestors, the statics show that they have a BIG problem.
On a per capita basis, Chicago vs. NYC shows a clear disparity when it comes to crime.
(OW, please note the use of stats to debate a point.)
Chicago’s violent crime is 76% higher than NYC and 119% above the national average.
Chicago’s property crime is 85% higher than NYC.
Those types of statistics, at some point, justify looking at leadership to say, “Why aren’t you changing the trajectory of these numbers?”
A 38 year old man was shot in a car-jacking attempt today, and Kimm Foxx is spending her PR capital on reducing sentences of convicted felons.
It’s her right to pursue that agenda. But she’s wasting value time and resources while avoiding the statics and news that are front and center.

I’m so sorry, all, I wound up the anti-Chicagoan who mocks the victims of child molestation.
That’s on me.
If Chicago was so awful… the Midwest Region championship wouldn’t be here already…
… when a collegiate football national championship, a Final Four, or Super Bowl doesn’t sell out by those biases, those would all be firsts.
You are so grossly self-unaware.

Justing saying a group of people (students at Jesuit universities, for example) are smart, does not necessarily imply that one believes all others are not. Too bad some people interpret a compliment to one group as disrespect to others.

He has showed us who he is many, many times.

OW,
Seriously, you are so sensitive to me saying “Show me where on the doll Mr. Rauner touched?” in response to you blaming the governor for every ill of this state going back 30 years?
I’ll note as a staunch advocate, donator, and leader for those without a voice, few saw a problem, regarding the removal of parental notification for abortions on minors. This was one of many positions that “groomers” seek. It’s in explicable that more would not have risen up in outrage over supporting a position that benefitted child molestation in this state.
You’ll have to excuse OW, as he, while dishing out personal attacks right and left, seems a little sensitive himself.

First, “seriously”… all that you touted would be against Chicago, welp, the NCAA is here this weekend, so your ridiculousness is based on a bias not what is actually happening… today.
Why do you do work in Chicago if it’s so bad? I’ll let you think on that one.
===Seriously, you are so sensitive to me saying “Show me where on the doll Mr. Rauner touched?” in response===
Why do you keep tattling on yourself?
You think mocking the victims of child molestation is a good “burn”? You are a sad and apparently sick individual who thinks that this is a “kool” thing. I’d be embarrassed thinking that, but here you are, again, touting this mocking of the victims of child molestation. Why?
Would you want those you work with… with children… to know that’s how you think about the victims of child molestation, that they should be mocked?
I do appreciate every time you embarrassingly own that as a badge of honor. It reminds me why I can’t forget it

Pope Francis, I’m sure, agrees. #Jesuit
This all does kinda remind me of when NU football was so awful and the chanting about the better education at NU over, say, Illinois, and now that’s flipped on its ear.
Chicago, along with San Francisco, Philadelphia, and San Antonio hosting this weekend, it’s really important to note how three big cities, and San Antonio… sneaky large San Antonio… is bigger than San Francisco and is the only city of the four to host a Final Four, as they have the facility to do so.
The McCaskeys could help the Chicagoland area, for sure.
