* This buy is “cable with some broadcast included”…

Today, Alderman Gilbert Villegas released the first television advertisement for his congressional campaign in Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District. In the 30-second ad, six-figure buy, Villegas shares his personal story and why the struggle of working families is so personal to him.

VO: “Bien vestido, Bien recibido”
(Translation: Well dressed, Well received)

GV: I was raised by strong Latina women. After my father’s sudden death, it was my abuela, food stamps, and public housing that helped my mom make ends meet.

It wasn’t easy, but I found my place in service. As a Marine, a union truck driver, an Alderman I have fought the fights for everyday working people and won.

We need representatives in Washington who can get real results for our community.

That’s why I’m running for Congress.

Join us.

I am Gil Villegas and I approve this message.”

  1. A. I want to vote for him. But I live no where near his district. It is emotional and practical all at once. Addresses the issues that the so called progressives claim they only can own.

  2. Decent bio spot, but the “bien vestido, bien recibido” saying feels out of place.

  3. A+ for his first TV ad. It tells about his life and professional background. Its short sweet and to the point.

  4. Standard issue bio ad. Not terribly memorable, but this checks the box. They will need to target effectively on cable to make a good impact on female voters, which I assume is the audience for this ad.

    B, maybe B+.

  5. It’s a B

I think - 47th Ward - covers all the bases. It gets the name out there, it’s not a big splash but it does create the ripples.

It’s far better than not having any intro ad at all. It’s serviceable.

    “B”

  6. I’d give it an ‘A’. Short and to the point. A great short bio ad.

  7. I give it an A. Well crafted, with the visuals effectively supplementing the voiceover. It also effectively conveys his friendly but quiet, lets get the work done, demeanor (or at least how I would describe his demeanor).

  8. A, The opening line gets you to look up and the calming tone keeps your attention. This should really stand out in a cluttered commercial break full of dark, loud, negative ads.

Respect for strong Latina women, military service, blue collar background, all winners.

  9. I give it a “B”. I agree with what a few others have said - it’s a fine introduction ad. This sort of ad is rarely going to be something special, but it is solid and gets the job done.

Now, the question is, just how big is this 6-figure buy? An ad can be great but doesn’t mean much if few people see it.

  10. I’ve seen lots and lots of candidates give fundraiser stump speeches and saw Villegas give the 5 minute version of this ad at one last winter. No joke it was maybe one of the top 3 I’ve watched over the years. If he has the $ to get it out his bio story will move voters. Ex-Marine should play with some voters too. Just don’t know if they have the $ to get the story to enough eyeballs

Full disclosure: I like him but have never donated to him. I’m just Chicago political fundraiser arm candy.

  11. Good intro - well done. Give it an A…
