Newman, who upset anti-abortion rights House veteran Dan Lipinski two years ago, is hitting the issue hard again, even though Casten—unlike Lipinski—says he’s pro-choice.
In an opinion piece written for CNN a few days ago, Newman wrote about her experience in having an abortion at age 19, when she was a college student “already working two jobs, which hardly covered enough money to support myself.” Beyond that, she wrote, “As a teenager barely out of childhood myself, I simply was not ready to take on the monumental responsibility of becoming a parent.”
Newman picks up that theme in a new campaign ad that starts airing on cable TV today. She then suggests she can be trusted on the issue unlike Casten, who “voted for anti-choice Republicans like George (H.W.) Bush.”
Casten’s campaign responds that he indeed did favor Bush for a variety of reasons—two decades ago—but that his and Newman’s views on abortion rights are “identical.”
There was a difference between HW and W, but the ad doesn’t specify that.

When I was 19 I made the very difficult decision to have an abortion. I just wasn’t ready to start my family. I’ve fought for women’s reproductive rights for 30 years and I’m outraged that this fundamental right is being taken away. In 2020, I beat one of the last anti-choice Democrats in Congress. My opponent now is Sean Casted, who voted for anti-choice Republicans like George Bush. I’m Congresswoman Marie Newman and I approved this message to ask one question: With the stakes this high, who do you trust?

Planned Parenthood, NARAL, and Marcie Love, the founder of Personal PAC, endorsed Congressman Casten not only because of his 100% pro-choice voting record in Congress, but also because they know he will never hesitate to protect a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions. It is disappointing to see our opponent try to mislead voters about an issue they are in total agreement on.
…Adding… The Casten campaign saw some of the confusion in comments and clarified that Casten voted for HW in 1992.

HW was last on the ballot in 1992. That’s thirty years ago. W was selected in 2000, and was last on the ballot in 2004. To which President Bush is she referring, or is Hinz responsible for my confusion?

Not a big Casten fan, but if he voted for George H.W. Bush (one of my heroes) he definitely should be commended for that vote. Shame our current Republican Party wouldn’t have a place for a guy like him anymore

It’s a decent ad, but this is a lot of the same district that voted for Lipinski all those years. I’m not sure the ad is really going to motivate those voters.
Rep. Newman is a bit much in general too.

You’d be hard pressed to call HW anti-choice, especially given where Barbara came down on the subject.
It’s a glancing blow, but it gets the focus off Iymen Chehade for a while

Not that Newman’s attack is totally on point, but if calling for overturning Roe v Wade is anti-choice, then HW Bush certainly was, or at least governed as such:

It’s kind of neat because I was initially was confused that Casten could even vote in 92. He doesn’t seem that old to me.
But it was probably his very first election.

I’m now in the 6th District, and was previously repped by Newman. I am tired of her wannabe Squad member act, the Chehade thing is also troublesome and I really don’t like the woman. I am glad that Casten got rid of Peter Roskam, and will be casting my vote for Casten.

Never understood why Casten touted that he used to vote for Republicans. He was acting like a far left liberal in 2018 when he beat Roskam. This didn’t make any sense and he didn’t need to put the info out there to win. Now it’s coming back to “haunt” him. JK He’s still going to beat Newman.

Newman is an ethically-challenged carpetbagger. I’ll be voting for Casten on June 28 and in all other elections in which I’m entitled to vote for him.

This is a pretty good effort by Newman. There’s really not much daylight between her and Casten on any issue, so it makes sense for her to try to create daylight on the big issue of the day.
It won’t make her ethics complaint go away, but anything to divert attention from that works.

My question for MN. “Did you still vote for Poshard for Governor in ‘98 despite his record on abortion?”
If no, I would then ask, “Did you instead vote for Ryan despite his corruption becoming known by the election, and the Willis children tragedy?”

My money is still on Congresswoman Newman having a felony indictment by the end of the year for the poor judgement she showed pretty recently, not back when Boyz II Men was the hottest ticket in town and Kris Kross were making people jump.
Strong campaigns don’t need deceptive ads. Strong candidates don’t star in their deceptive ads.
