Bailey opposes abortion including in cases of rape or incest. However, “I have no problem when it comes to the point of saving the life of the mother … I don’t consider that an abortion.”
Bailey would seek to end taxpayer funding of abortion and try to repeal a new law that ended required parental notification when minors get abortions.
But he supports the idea of making “abortion unnecessary. Let’s empower churches and civic groups and religious organizations to offer real help and hope to pregnant women.” […]
Democrats have warned the Supreme Court will next act to reduce access to contraceptives or restrict same-sex marriages.
“I believe in biblical marriage between a man and a woman,” Bailey said. But in Illinois, “currently with same-sex marriage, it’s the law. Illinois decided to make it a law, I understand the reasons. I will not be seeking to mess with that; we have bigger problems to deal with.”
I’m so old I remember when the Democrats nominated a southern Illinois gubernatorial candidate with those very same beliefs (Glenn Poshard, 1998).

As Pride month comes to an end, Darren Bailey wasted no time reminding voters that he cannot and will not be a governor for all of Illinois. In an interview Thursday, Bailey said that he “believe[d] in biblical marriage between a man and a woman.”
In his concurring opinion on the Roe decision, Justice Clarence Thomas signaled the Supreme Court may revisit marriage equality. At a time of great uncertainty for LGBTQ+ and marginalized communities, Illinoisans need a leader who will proudly fight for their rights––not one who doesn’t even recognize they exist.
“Every day Darren Bailey shows us just how extreme he really is,” said JB for Governor Spokeswoman Natalie Edelstein. “Marriage equality is the law of the land and all Americans, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, can exercise their right to marry. Illinois deserves a governor who will not just “say gay,” but who will march alongside them at Pride, protest with them for Black Trans Lives, support queer-owned small businesses, and above all else ensure their rights are protected.
Meanwhile, Governor Pritzker expanded the Illinois Human Rights Act to include LGBTQ+ residents as a protected class and expanded infertility insurance to cover LGBTQ+ families. From inclusive LGBTQ+ curriculums in schools, to expanded Medicaid coverage for gender affirming surgery, to requiring single occupancy restrooms be designated as gender neutral––Governor Pritzker has made great strides in affirming that Illinois is a place where everyone can feel supported.

Q: There’s an ad against you on TV right now that says you would support an abortion ban, including when it comes to incest or rape. Is that true or not true?
A: No, that’s not true…
Q: But they show you agreeing with it? Did they edit it? Or what?
A: I said ‘at this time,’ and that was early on in my candidacy and the laws of Illinois have changed since then abortion has been codified into a law as a medical procedure.
Q: So, what would you support as governor, the state of Illinois when it comes to abortion?
A: I’ve been very clear about that during this entire campaign. And since then, I’ve said that, number one, we must end taxpayer funded abortion, there’s people residents of Illinois have no stomach or desire to be paying for abortions, let alone this increase that Governor Pritzker wants to bring in. We need to restore parental notification. And because parents need to have they need to be able to make choices for their young children, 12 year old girls that this is ridiculous. And then finally, an idea that was picked up in some of the churches on the Southside of Chicago that I’ve been presented with and I’ve been working on is this idea to make abortion unnecessary. And we do that by making adoption easier. We will do that by partnering with churches, civic groups and religious organization to make sure that pregnant women get the true care and opportunities that they deserve. I’m having to make a choice. Do I get an abortion or not?
Q: If the legislature would have passionate abortion ban, would you sign it?
A: Well, that’s not going to happen.
Q: We just, [crosstalk] I want to know what, but I just want to, Senator I want to zero in on where you stand in your position on it. If they were, and I agree with you it’s very unlikely, would you sign it?
A: Right now, my stance is that I have said that banning abortion is not a solution. We have got to work together. So hopefully, hopefully, I can work together with many groups in the Chicago area, to come to some terms and present some real options where government can partner with organizations to offer true hope and choice to pregnant women. That is the goal, so there’s, that’s your answer.

Q: Representative, are you going to support the LGBTQ community?
A: Well, I believe that, you know, in biblical marriage, that marriage is between a man and a woman. But I can tell you this, I don’t, law has been created. I embrace and love everyone as Jesus loves them. I don’t intend to hinder and get in their way at all. So, as a matter of fact, one of my best friends in the House that I consider a friend that I’ve been able to work with is a Representative Greg Harris, we’ve had an amazing the two years that I served in the Senate and in the House and now in the Senate, I’ve been able to refer to him to help get things done and to bring some ideas to him and to partner with him on some bills. So, so no, this whole, Governor Pritzker twisting all this nonsense trying to make this election about to abortion, this, is a problem. And this us going to be on Governor Pritzker’s head and that’s why we’re going to win in November because the true problems in Illinois encompass everyone, and that is crime, high taxes and unsafe schools. We’re going to get those six, we’re going to bring opportunity up to Illinois. That’s what people are worried about.

Abortion and marriage are the least of my worries. I wonder if kitchen table issues will resonate more in this election. People paying for food and gas in addition to other everyday issues that are more critical.

It’s interesting how the solutions for “making abortion unnecessary” are always treating the symptoms, not the cause.
I also want to make abortion unnecessary. Free contraception, comprehensive sex ed, better access to family planning resources, and research towards non-abortive ways to terminate a pregnancy are all viable strategies; not forcing someone to complete a pregnancy and assisting them in the
aftermath. We should reach a point where little to no pregnancies are unwanted.

Abortion may not be a kitchen table issue, but I don’t think it’s fair to say it’s not an everyday issue. It may not be discussed, but I guarantee that many women in your life keep it in the back of their mind. Given the frequency at which it is needed, and the high costs associated with pregnancy, childbirth, and the raising of children, it’s still a pocketbook issue, in addition to a moral and personal choice one.

The tent revival aspects of the Bailey campaign framing will face considerable pushback from Democrats and those requiring Bailey not retreat from cultish type allegiance to Trump and his religious base that won’t want a passive take towards social agenda items.
Here I thought moving towards the middle was the hard part.

Yes, I remember it too. And as I recall, Poshard won the nomination with about 37% of the vote. I like to think his views on gay rights and abortion were in the minority among Democrats.
Flash forward and a lot of those Poshard voters are quite comfortable voting for Bailey.

I haven’t read comments yet.
A few days ago, OW suggested he believes Abortion might not be “on the ballot” in November. I have to disagree. I agree that property taxes, crime, the economy, etc. will all be on the ballot. But I am firmly convinced this election will be framed around the culture war as well. Perhaps, even more so. I look at this exchange and see Bailey leading that charge as if he wants to be defined as the leader of the culture war. I also see Pritzker saying, okay, lets go down that road so as to position himself as the moderate going against the radical right.
I also am convinced that the abortion issue is not a political weapon, but instead a serious gender issue for women in our state, and in America. I think it will motivate women to the polls, and may produce a few surprises in terms of winners and losers.
The abortion issue today reminds me of the Illinois Constitutional Convention of 1824. Historical buffs may recall that the legislature removed one senator and replaced him with another so as to put slavery on the ballot (amend the Constitution). All records indicate oOne third of the voters (men) wanted to add slavery to the Consitution; one third of the voters (men) wanted to keep slavery out of the Constitution; and one third of the voters (men) did not care one way or the other.
When the final vote was cast, Illinois voters overwhelmingly voted to not amend the Constitution through a Convention. I have always assumed that the reason the anti-slavery people prevailed was because of women, not morality. I believe the women of Illinois told their husbands and sons (only men could vote), that if the voted for slavery, it would be a cold day in hell before they would forgive them. Women were the ones who attended church and listened to abolitionist sermons, not men. Men stood outside and drank with each other while women attended services.
Women put down the called for Constitutional Convention of 1824 by telling men what the would and would not accept. I believe this. And I also believe between now and November, women will be schooling mean on why people like Bailey and Mitch McConnell and Josh Hawley cannot be elected.
But I am only guessing, right?

Inflation isn’t really in the Governor’s control, so I don’t see prices as real issues in the race except for those who are just unhappy and won’t be voting for JB anyway. Abortion and the other hot-button social issues are state-related and it is hard to dismiss them when they are upheld by Illinois laws that can get changed.

Two ways to play this, one that he’s going back on his word and conservatives can’t trust him, try to suppress enthusiasm, and the other to say that he still takes anti-choice views on other topics, try to minimize his gains with this very slight leftward shift.

Exactly. And which civic organizations is he talking about because I suspect none is the reality. He wants more public money (welfare) to go to his religious organizations of those aligned with his thinking as opposed to the “others”.

It’s crystal clear if one reads/hears/sees…
The Bailey GOP in Illinois hold minority polled positions in every social agenda item.
There’s not one social agenda item where Bailey can stay pat to his red meat takes.
All that said, this update is great news for the Pritzker Crew, as Bailey says out loud what I’m typing here…
… Bailey’s positions pre-Tuesday… they are not only hurtful in November, those pre-Tuesday positions sink Bailey before he even leaves port.

Senate candidate Obama held those views in 2004…

That link by Lefty Lefty is gold. I got a vasectomy. Mrs. Drone and I have the number of kids we want. Which is one. Relatively easy procedure. I’ve had dental visits that were harder. And I don’t consider myself especially brave or pain tolerant. It really was that easy. Vasectomies prevent abortions.

All thru the eighties, DCFS sponsored a fostering and adoption project called;”One Church, One Child”. They would host an event at a church and bring out a kid like Jerry Lewis used to do on his telethons, and try to get a church member to come forward to adopt or foster.
I don’t think it was that effective.

Tent revival campaigns are a lot like churches. Parishioners (friends) tend to agree with you. It’s the reason that you were able to get them to show up in the first place. But that’s not how general elections work. Bailey is now tasked with taking his message from the mass to the masses. It’s something he’s never done before. And he’s got a formidable opponent.

Bailey is doing the normal conservative playbook: pretend everything is set in stone until you’re in a position to actually undo it. This is what the right wing has been saying and doing for decades.
Pritzker is right not only to hammer Bailey with it, but to tie him to the national right wing movement. There are numerous high profile examples that can be pointed to, including the very public confirmation hearings of multiple SCOTUS justices.
The right wingers will always say “oh that’s settled law” or “that won’t happen” and they will call you names or act personally offended when you suggest they are misleading.

As a Republican I honestly wish Senator Bailey well and will vote for him.
But he is already beginning to spiral out of control.
He honestly needs to take a little vacation time and sit down with his advisers and try and work some of this out.
Maybe have a surrogate or two try and get the word out about the kitchen table issues noted above (throw in a little about crime) and then reengage when you have better talking points.
It is a short campaign (relative to Illinois norms) but my god if he doesn’t hit pause for a moment he is going to blather himself into a hole so deep with these stupid radio interviews that there will be utterly no hope (and he has little hope to begin with).

I wonder what percentage of Glenn’s voters in 1998 are planning to vote for Darren this year? Poshard was one of the last Democrat to carry many Eastern Bloc counties, back when some of those exact same areas may have even been Democratic strongholds (especially in southern Illinois).

Bailey will struggle with interviews and questions in the weeks and months ahead. Steve Cochran’s interview was a train wreck for Bailey.
Bailey lacks the ability to speak extemporaneously and confidently about the issues facing Illinois. Bailey’s meet and greets were to his base. As the weeks move along, Bailey will crumple like a cheap suit.

Wholly ignoring that Pritzker will paint Bailey as dangerous to women’s health or Bailey’s religious takes towards other social issues… you own your words. Pritzker’s gonna make Bailey own words spoken weeks and months ago at a very expensive clip.

I never said, and have never said, any such thing.
If you missed snark, sorry.
Frankly, it’s the opposite, stating as early as March that I felt abortion would be a huge deal, maybe even in the primary.
You can make points without including me as your premise. Stand on your own thoughts, or please check more carefully to others.

I’m not sure how he’s going to work this out. Bailey has said some pretty bombastic things over the years and “biblical marriage” is only the tip of the iceberg. How’s he going to walk back his plans to have the rest of the state secede from Chicago because they don’t “share our values?”
Some things can’t really be unspun. And if the first 72 hours are any indication, I don’t think the Pritzker campaign has a vacation in their immediate plans. Bailey’s immediate goal is to avoid being swamped by his own words in the first week. Because if that happens he’ll spend the rest of his campaign explaining. And you know what they say about that.
