* Jim Dey…
The ostensible reason for Democrats’ opposition to Kelly relates to fundraising. The Federal Election Commission ruled last year that Kelly can only raise money for federal offices and money raised for state candidates must come through a committee independent of Kelly’s review.
Pritzker & Co. charged Kelly can’t raise sufficient funds, although Kelly supporters note the party has nearly $3 million.
But here’s the rub. As a candidate for the U.S. House in Chicago, Hernandez could be in the same fundraising boat that Kelly is now.
Perhaps that’s why Kelly supporters charged the fundraising issue is a pretext.
He appears to be confusing state Rep. Lisa Hernandez (D-Berwyn) with state Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-Chicago).
Also, as I explained to subscribers, much of the money the party currently has in the bank was put there by none other than former state party chair Mike Madigan and rightfully belongs to the House Democrats.
* Meanwhile, Axios takes a look at Darren Bailey’s op-ed in the Chicago Tribune…
Bailey wrote that “defunding the police” has made it difficult for officers to do their jobs.
• But Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s 2022 budget actually boosted police funding by $189 million, from $1.7 billion to nearly $1.9 billion.
The other side: Bailey spokesperson Joe DeBose says Bailey supports the claim of defunding the police by using old budget data from 2020 to 2021 — when spending fell by $59 million — rather than the latest figures.
What’s more: Bailey’s assertion that CPS spent almost $23,000 per student in 2021 doesn’t jibe with district calculations of $14,782 per student and is “not based on any facts provided by Chicago Public Schools,” district officials tell Axios.
• And while the latest Illinois Report Card shows that CPS’ per-pupil instructional spending is slightly higher than average in the state, that’s not unusual in a district with high costs of living and high-need students.
• State officials say that CPS has only 67% of the funding it needs.Yes, but: Bailey’s camp says it arrived at its figure by dividing the number of students in the district by the total 2021 CPS budget, which includes legacy debt payments and capital funding — not just money that goes to schools.
Heckuva job, Tribbies.

Wow, Jim Dey, do all those Latinos look alike? Sorry - couldn’t resist. Real amateur move.

So all the ayatollah needs to do is use that same calculation formula on EVERY other district in the state to make an accurate comparison. That’s all. Lol.
Ayatollah bailey porports himself to be a straight shooter (pardon the pun) but he isn’t. There is an accepted accounting formula used in Illinois to determine OEPP/PCTC (operating expense per pupil/ per capita tuition charge) and given his years on a school board he should have known that. He also runs the heavy metal jesus school which would want to know that number as well.
I rate his statement “pants on fire”

Looks like the mistake was edited out, but with no correction. Not great.

The new management has transitioned the Trib editorial page from politically myopic to just plain stupid.

Agreed. Amateur move by Dey not to assume they wouldn’t run a US House candidate against another… I’ll leave the lack of a correction judgement call to his editors. But without the (incorrect) assumption, his opinion piece is meritless.

==rightfully belongs to the House Democrats.==
Someone might argue with “rightfully”, but it illustrates that Kelly’s fundraising woes were even worse than we thought.
==But Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s 2022 budget actually boosted police funding==
I suppose that the argument is that the “Defund the police” talk makes police feel disrespected, so they don’t do their jobs as well.
But that…is not a very kind argument to make on behalf of police, to say the least.

Jim Dey is a lazy Editorial page Editor who rarely bothers with research or picking up the phone.
His narrative is always the same, an unfortunate example of Trump being occasionally accurate about main stream media.

Candidate Bailey and the word “facts” should never appear in the same sentence.

Lol, Jim Dey. It’s like the old City News Bureau saying. If your mother gives you two Hispanic names, no need to check it out — it’s probably the same person.

I’m glad Bailey saved the most recent traunch of embarrassing bits until they had roto rootered out my lungs because I don’t think I could have survived reading this weeks stuff without laughing myself to death.

These errors… they seem designed to allow a narrative to take root and not about an honest, plum mistake?
They could be mistakes, I’m not going to discount that probability, but here’s the thing… these mistakes are convenient more than erroneous?
Also, you make a mistake, own up to it, don’t edit without acknowledging the edit.

Bailey will hopefully learn that writing op ed’s isn’t the same as posting online. One group pays attention to facts, the other celebrates conspiracy theory untruths. Pretty sure voters are predominantly in the first group.

I am so old, I remember when Tribune op-ed’s were fact-checked by the editorial board editor, a job now held by Chris Jones.
Comment by Thomas Paine Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 12:16 pm
Anyone know if Dey’s column went to print with the error in place?
Comment by lollinois Tuesday, Aug 2, 22 @ 12:18 pm
Thomas Paine, I was thinking the same thing. Just a few years ago, the edit board would run submitted op-eds through the ringer, wanting sourced footnotes/references for any claims.

Sounds like something that would be standard operating procedure in Springfield at the SJR and at Channel 20.

I thought the Tribune ceased reporting a while back; they just make it up “The Onion”-style now. And Bailey is just being Bailey; no surprise.
