* Background is here if you need it. Fox 32 conducted a brief interview of Darren Bailey in the wake of his newly revealed claim about comparing abortion to the Holocaust…
Darren Bailey: Well, again, we’re here to support what’s going on here. I don’t want to make, I don’t want to make light of what’s taking place here. Things were taken out of context as they typically are, so we’ll be addressing that later. So we’ll get you a statement on that that you can look at.
Dane Placko: How were they taken out of context?
Darren Bailey: Well.
Dane Placko: I mean the words are the words. They’re out there.
Darren Bailey: The words are the words. The context is missing. The context needs to be taken in and the press unfortunately misses that sometimes. So we’ll send you a statement and I’ll answer questions later. Let’s focus on what’s going on here [crosstalk].
Click here for the full video. And you can click here for a very rough Otter transcription…
God knows when we’re created, when we’re conceived, even before that, He knows that He has plans for us. And I believe that abortion is one of the greatest atrocities of our day. And I believe it’s one of the greatest atrocities probably forever. The attempted extermination of the Jews of World War II, that doesn’t even compare on a shadow of the life that has been lost and with abortion since its legalization.
And then he continues to talk about HB40, which provided for taxpayer-funded abortions.
*** UPDATE *** Bailey also insisted that his remarks about Highland Park were “taken out of context”…
The comments he was referring to were made during an Independence Day speech in Skokie, shortly after the shooting.
“The shooter is still at large. So let’s pray for justice to prevail, and then let’s move on and let’s celebrate the independence of this nation,” Bailey had said during that speech.
When talking with the Highland Park woman, Bailey said he was able to explain what happened.
“It was completely taken out of context,” he told her, and recounted to the Kankakee GOP. “Our prayers were hurting for your friends and your family, but the news media does this stuff.”
But, again, it was not taken out of context…
About 20 minutes away from here, in Highland Park, there was a shooting. There were several people that we know have been shot. That’s all we know. And we’re just going to take a moment and pray for the families. Friends, let’s pray for the law enforcement and and even the organizers of this parade. They’ve done an amazing job. There’s a lot of confusion and frustration that the parade’s being cancelled but they did the right thing because people’s safety has got to come first. The shooter is still at large. So let’s pray for justice to prevail. And then let’s move on and let’s celebrate, celebrate the independence of this nation. We know the mission. We have got to get corruption and evil out of our government and we have got to elect men and women of honor and of courage to get this country and this state back on track. So right now if you would, join me in prayer for the families.
…Adding… More Bailey on Highland Park…
Bailey made national headlines after his comment on the Highland Park mass shooting that left seven dead. Bailey said, “let’s move on and celebrate the independence of this nation”. He later apologized for his comments.
“No, I apologized for that and as a matter of fact that was taken out of context,” said Bailey

Surprised it took him this long to get to “out of context”.
Comment by Arsenal Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 11:08 am
Wait, it’s his video, no?
Bailey is a pathetic, small man who talks big to a religious or National Socialist bend… until Bailey is called out on his despicable words.
The context is Bailey said it.
That’s the context.

Opens mouth. Shoots foot. Again.
And again.
Comment by XonXoff Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 11:11 am
It is funny, tho, that after some folks spent some time yesterday bending over backwards to say Bailey was right, he won’t even stand by his words.
Comment by Arsenal Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 11:12 am
This is known as the Alex Jones defense and it’s working about as well for Bailey as it is Jones.
The words are the words is pretty classic in terms of saying I didn’t say what your lying ears told you I said.
Comment by ArchPundit Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 11:13 am
===after some folks spent some time yesterday bending over backwards to say Bailey was right, he won’t even stand by his words.===
Bailey is a small man using “big thoughts” to dog whistles and catering to the worst elements… until Bailey has to personally answer for every letter, syllable, word…
Now, the worst elements defend it.
Why? Easy. It was a fog whistle heard, and answered.
The only thing going for Bailey is these folks can’t stand Pritzker (or any Dem) so where they goin’?
Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 11:15 am
“The words are the words.” Yes, Darren, they are. And words have meaning. And either you do not know their meaning, or you do not care. Either way, the words are now out there forever.
Comment by thisjustinagain Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 11:18 am
When one posts a Facebook Live video, one has the opportunity to provide one’s own “context.” Not a lot of way to blame the MSM for such self-inflicted wounds.
Does he really want voters in the collars to do a deep dive into full-length versions of his Facebook bible study videos? I suspect few things would sink his general election effort faster than that.
Comment by Dysfunction Junction Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 11:21 am
Context: 1.the circumstances that form the setting for an event, statement, or idea, and in terms of which it can be fully understood and assessed. 2. the parts of something written or spoken that immediately precede and follow a word or passage and clarify its meaning.
OK Darren, we’ve seen the video, and what you said before and after this statement. Now what were you saying about being taken out of context in your own video?
Comment by Ron Burgundy Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 11:22 am
Bailey and Miller. The Holocaust and Hitler Tour. I sure none of these remarks will make our local central Illinois news. Decatur and Springfield news stations might as well be designated WGOP breaking news
Comment by Stormsw7706 Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 11:25 am
OTOH, if Bailey saw what happened in Kansas last night, I understand why he doesn’t want to stand by extremely pro-life public statements.
Comment by Arsenal Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 11:29 am
The context makes it worse.

Fascinated to hear in what context “[t]he attempted extermination of the Jews of World War II, that doesn’t even compare on a shadow of the life that has been lost and with abortion since its legalization” becomes a decent thing to say.

=== Taken out of context ===
Translation: “I meant exactly what I said, but my handlers said to blame the media.”
Proft’s Jam, OTOH, is takeing things out of context for a grifter living.
Comment by PublicServant Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 11:43 am
Did I miss the word “sorry” in any of Bailey’s weak comments?
He had a couple of days to craft a response, and the best he can do is to fumble around with context, and the media? And we will give you a statement later?
how many more ads are coming? Politics ain’t beanbag, Darren. It’s different when you have incoming fire, and you are not talking to true believers.
Kind of reminds me of zapping ants on the sidewalk with a magnifying glass.
Comment by Langhorne Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 11:45 am
Bailey’s staff is still struggling trying to make up a plausible phony context story.
Comment by Norseman Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 11:48 am
The reason people don’t use holocaust or Hitler analogies is because the context is always bad, always.
Bailey knew what he was saying when he uttered these words. And this is hardly going to be the last Facebook live debacle to put him on the hotseat. He’s going to have to make a decision quickly. Either commit to an endless stream of apologies or follow the path of his leader and ignore the criticism.
Comment by Pundent Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 11:52 am
To the Bailey crowd, “pro choice” advocates appear unsympathetic to the loss of a potential human life. Right or wrong, no one is going to change that for Bailey and his supporters.
He just should never use the Holocaust as a comparison. What comparison should he use? 9-1-1? The bubonic plague? COVID? Maybe none at all.
Comment by Medvale School for the Gifted Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 11:52 am
To the update, didn’t he apologize shortly after the “move on” remark? Is he withdrawing that apology?

I ran out of gas. I… I had a flat tire. I didn’t have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn’t come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake. A terrible flood. Locusts. It wasn’t my fault I swear to god.
Comment by TheInvisibleMan Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 12:07 pm
So “out of context” now means, someone else is to blame.
Comment by Amurica Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 12:11 pm
I really wish huh? at 11:30am would find another handle. Squatting on someone’s else’s moniker is rude and attributes comments to another person.

Was Candidate Bailey wearing tap shoes during the interview with Dane Placko? Perhaps “out of context” should be Bailey’s campaign theme.

I’m guessing Pritzker thinks he’s getting quite the return on his primary investment
Comment by Nick Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 12:22 pm
If he truly believes what he said, he should just double down. Anyone that takes a minute to look at the video knows he is full of garbage. When I said he should pivot after winning the primary, I didn’t mean pivot to being Richard Irvin.

Darren Bailey. Straight outta context.
Comment by Bigtwich Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 12:59 pm
Interviews with media are a disaster for Candidate Bailey. Knew this would occur as Bailey is not savvy or skilled enough to address his previous blunders and pronouncements.
Bailey blabs on FB to his chorus but previous remarks are blowing up in his face. Candidate Bailey is not equipped or qualified for the top spot.

Bingo. Bailey is so out of touch he probably thought he’d score points by not denying the Holocaust actually happened.

Here’s what I suggest, Darren. To clear up your context issues, just mistakenly send all your cell phone texts to the JB campaign. I mean, Alex Jones even did that. I’m sure it’ll clear things up contextwise.

Pritzker and the DGA warned Illinois about this. /s
If the GOP electorate was different in Illinois, the DGA/Pritzker ploy to promote Bailey could have backfired. But the GOP base really supports Bailey, who like Trump is very imperfect, but he professes to God, which means so much to certain voters. He is such a great fit for them.

Darren Bailey’s “taken out of context” claims remind me of Charles Barkley’s 1991 claim that he had been misquoted… in his own autobiography.
(And as with Sir Charles, young people should not consider Darren Bailey a role model.)

Bailey’s context is that he’s taken out of context whenever reality rears its ugly head.
Comment by TJ Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 2:03 pm
On a serious note, the murder of 6 million people is never better than something else when used in any context. Never.
I am using my interpretive super powers to come to the conclusion that that is what Bailey meant when he said what he said using his words.
What it tells me is that, along with all of his shortcomings, he is not honest enough, or skilled, or thoughtful, or smart enough to be a dog catcher much less governor.
Well done ILGOP. You only have yourselves to blame.
Comment by JS Mill Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 2:03 pm
Unfortunately for Darren Bailey he needs all of the earned media he can get. And his prolific history on Facebook Live will ensure that he gets it.

If Bailey believes that waiving prayers around like so many magic wands, places him on moral high ground and the onus on someone/thing else to actually address the big problems, that might go a long way toward explaining his recent struggles.
Comment by XonXoff Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 2:42 pm
Bailey’s Law: I meant what I said except when it angers people, then it was taken out of context.
And can I get a second for the motion to cite Baily for a Goodwin’s Law violation on the field of play?

I don’t know about everyone else here, but …
This strikes me a ‘bearing false witness’.
Which, per Matthew 15:18-20, “defile[s] a person”.
For such a devout Christian, Darren seems to have a pretty thin grasp of Christ’s teachings.
Comment by Chris Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 3:09 pm
I think the main reason it is so hard to understand what Darren means is that he is speaking in tounges most of the time. Too bad that more of us don’t have the gift of interpreting glossolalia. Maybe some of the folks at Crossroads Church could help us out with that.
Comment by MoralMinority Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 3:14 pm
I meant Crossroots Church not Crossroads Church. Blame autocorrect for that.

But sadly, he may win 60+ counties in November. Whatever the result, it will tell us a lot about the state of the ILGOP electorate.
Comment by 47th and Lake Park Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 4:11 pm
And realize that what he is saying in these videos is what he thinks will attract him followers– and it has. It is important to always keep in mind that there are a lot of people who think a lot of crazy stuff– “on both sides…” But the crazies are dominating the GOP these days in IL, bigly.
Comment by 47th and Lake Park Wednesday, Aug 3, 22 @ 4:15 pm
His words seemed pretty clear to me, clear and reprehensible. I think he meant just what he said and what he said has no place in any public discourse.
