  3. Heartbreaking story in this morning’s SJ-R about a Springfield institution, Recycled Records. If any of you happens to have a rich uncle or aunt who loves rock music, please put them in touch with the surviving owner of the store. Funky, historic places like this are too important to be sold off in a piecemeal fashion.

  4. Tribune reported today that Kroger opened a warehouse in Maywood to be used for online grocery delivery creating 180 jobs.

I’m very happy for the Maywood jobs but their new process makes me worried for the future of grocery jobs as a whole.

It’s considered a spoke of a system of huge robotic warehouses Kroger is opening using tech from an English company. There is one of them just over our border in Pleasant Prairie.

There are 2,000+ robots per hub going around picking items and packing them automatically.

YouTuber Tom Scott did a video on one in England last year. It’s an amazing sight.

  5. Yes, Go Sky!!! It is nice to have a team to cheer for, that is a contender.

Also, Go Cards and Cubs! Regardless of each team, this series is always thrilling. Current matchup - Cards 2, Cubs 1.

  6. Maywood can sure use some middle class jobs. And it’s got major road arteries for trucks. Assuming a lot of trucks will be arriving to stock and going for delivery.

I have never seen a Kroger in the Chicagoland area. Do they own a local store?

  7. Jimbo,

Look at the upside: grocery delivery has dramatically lowered the number of food deserts in the US. According to a study published in JAMA by a Yale researcher, 90% of urban areas considered food deserts now have access to online grocery delivery.

  8. What happens to buttercow after her run at the fair? Does the state have a freezer full of former buttercows?

  10. To question on no Kroger stores in Chicagoland….believe Marianos is part of Kroger. You see some Kroger can products there.

  11. ===Do they own a local store?===

    Marianos is a Kroger brand.

  12. Kroger’s biggest Illinois market is the Peoria area as they have been the dominant chain grocer there for years.

  13. ==What happens to buttercow after her run at the fair?==

According to the Tribune last week: “the cows have been built from the same glob of Prairie Farms butter, stored in an ice cream factory freezer, for the last 17 years”

    It’s a good article-

  14. Re: Kroger
Kroger also has the Food 4 Less stores in Illinois. They still have a help wanted banner up outside the store in Dolton; been up for several months now.
And do the poor have the money to pay delivery fees charged by the delivery services?? Does JAMA know if they actually deliver to food deserts, which are often dangerous to deliver to??

  15. Thanks jimbo, that was a great article. I knew Iowa also had a buttercow (Mr Cermak is a native Iowan) I did not know the sculptor is often the same one.
And it’s nice to know they reuse the butter. So buttercow really is ephemeral.
I loved the web cam to be able to see her. It’s a long way to Springfield from Chicago just to see buttercow (I seldom like the musical acts and livestock judging is depressing for me as I know their eventual ends) and food on a stick is generally not conducive to a low carb diet.
