  1. He just became a lawyer in 2011? At the age of 50+? Did he graduate earlier and never pass the bar?

Comment by New Day Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 3:05 pm

  2. And no. I have no tattoos.

Comment by New Day Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 3:06 pm

  3. Yes, I have a tattoo. Got it 30 years ago. Just thought it was cool.

Comment by JS Mill Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 3:08 pm

  4. Nope. Never will. They don’t get prettier with time. Quite the opposite.

Comment by Stix Hix Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 3:12 pm

  5. No tattoos. Have thought about getting one.

Comment by Huh? Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 3:13 pm

  6. I remain ink free. I’m close to Rich in age (younger though, heh), but most people younger than me seem to have them. Most people I know who are my age do not. Anecdotal, but that’s been my experience.

I never even considered a tattoo. Not for any actual reason, but getting one never crossed my mind, even as more and more friends and people I know get them. Just not my thing.

The best tattoos, in my opinion, are ones that can be covered discretely. I know that’s my inner old man talking, but unless you have horrible scars, I see no reason to share your body art with the world.

And don’t get me started on body piercing…

    Comment by 47th Ward Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 3:13 pm

  7. No. Not opposed to getting one, just do not feel strongly enough about something (heritage, city I live in etc) to pull the trigger

Comment by Sox Fan Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 3:13 pm

  8. No. I don’t go in for pain. And I always want to be able to change my mind and that would be hard with a tattoo

Comment by DuPage Saint Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 3:16 pm

  9. No; why put a bumper sticker on a Cadillac?

Comment by Irmagerd Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 3:16 pm

  10. No, unless you count skin tags.

Comment by bogey golfer Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 3:19 pm

  11. Yes…they represent personal conflict and possibly evidence of “invisible” emotional scarring?

Comment by Dotnonymous Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 3:20 pm

  12. New Day, he was litigious even before law school:

Comment by Big Dipper Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 3:21 pm

  13. Took me 39 years to get my undergrad degree. That’s 39 years after I started. But I got it. No tattoos. Personal choice. Told my kids if they want to get one they could. Also told them if they have money to spend on tattoos, they must no longer need any of mine.

Comment by The Magnificent Purple Walnut Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 3:32 pm

  14. I have two. Both inked over 30 years ago when the tattoo thing first started to become mainstream. Both concealed when dressed business casual.

    Comment by Papa2008 Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 3:34 pm

  15. Got one after the war.

    Reason: Classified…

Comment by Tatoo Veteran Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 3:34 pm

  16. Us …no. How Capt. Fax and staff?
Not into pain w/ needles. And good tats are pretty pricey.

Comment by Annonin' Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 3:36 pm

  17. ==He just became a lawyer in 2011? At the age of 50+?==

If he is 53 now, he was 42 when he was admitted. Still, yes, that is pretty old to start practicing law.

I dont have a tattoo but if i ever get one it will say “DeVore” on the thing I sit on..

Comment by low level Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 3:37 pm

  18. No, but if I get one it will say:

Beware of People with Messages on their Forearms

Comment by Norseman Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 3:39 pm

  19. == New Day, he was litigious even before law school:==

So apparently he’s not just a terrible attorney, he’s also a terrible lobbyist.

I do not have any tattoos. I always worry what they’ll look like if/when the elderly wrinkles start to appear in greater volume. Wouldn’t want a giant freedom loving eagle that slowly turns into a withered, turkey looking thing.

Comment by fs Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 3:42 pm

  20. I have five tattoos that I got over the course of 10 years.

Unfortunately both forearms are accounted for so I’ll have to find somewhere else to get tattoos that prove I’m not sheeople. /s

I also can’t help but image that Devore has never been in a court room without his sleeves rolled up.

Comment by twowaystreet Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 3:42 pm

  21. Yep. I have five. Interestingly, I got one of them after I passed the bar.

    Comment by Ms_KJP Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 3:46 pm

  22. Yes, I have several, but I would imagine I am slightly younger than the average CapFax commenter. Fully anecdotally but at least among my younger friends, it’s more common to have at least one tattoo than to not. All of mine are able to be covered in an office environment, but I’m also finding that it’s more and more common for tattoos to be accepted in professional settings.

    Comment by /s Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 3:47 pm

  23. I have none. My dad has one and he always said he regretted it. Just not into pain.

Comment by Rich Miller Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 3:47 pm

  24. None yet, but hopefully will get one within the next year. Many friends of mine have them, and like so many things, they are of varying quality.

Comment by Techie Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 3:48 pm

  25. No. but feels like the Sox are tattooed on the inside of my heart. Though I am inspired by Fetterman….

Comment by Amalia Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 3:49 pm

  26. Yup, one that I got at 19.

Comment by LakeCo Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 3:49 pm

  27. Yep. Kind of went through a midlife crisis years ago and bought a motorcycle and got a tattoo. Both were big mistakes.

Comment by Bob Meter Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 3:52 pm

  28. Nope, not my dance.

I would have to say the attitude about them has changed significantly over the last 20 years.

Comment by OneMan Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 3:54 pm

  29. No tattoos here. No sentinment important enough to record for the rest of my life via a painful procedure.

Comment by stateandlake Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 3:57 pm

  30. I’m so old that, when I was a kid, “bums” were the only people with tattoos. Can’t get that image outta my head.

Comment by Curious citizen Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 4:06 pm

  31. No, not my thing but have nothing against them.

Comment by Ron Burgundy Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 4:07 pm

  32. Yes I have three, I got my first one when I was 60. and all are personal remembrances.

Comment by Just Peachy Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 4:08 pm

  33. — I know that’s my inner old man talking

It’s not inner any more (mine isn’t either)

I’m not into pain and I just don’t have anything I want permanently on me. Had a step sister and step-cousin if that’s a thing who were very talented tattoo artists though.

Comment by ArchPundit Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 4:11 pm

  34. Got four currently, planning on a few more. Just got the last one three weeks ago in downtown Springfield. Dude named Sam Myers at Good Heart Tattoo, he did a fantastic job considering I didn’t really have a picture for him to work from - just told him what I wanted, he came up with exactly what I wanted. No messing around, either, guy got me right in the chair and finished faster than I thought he would. I’d recommend him to anyone that wants one

    Comment by Lester Holt’s Mustache Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 4:14 pm

  35. ===It’s not inner any more===

    Lol. Thanks for reminding me.

    Now get off my lawn.

    Comment by 47th Ward Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 4:14 pm

  36. No tattoos. However, I was really taken by John Fetterman’s rationale for his. According to a 2021/03/21 article in the Philly Voice, one tattoo is the zip code of Braddock where he was mayor. The others are the dates of people killed in Braddock by violence while he was mayor.
Another great tattoo was a cornstalk in full color on the leg of a local Illinois Dairy Queen owner. (If he had soybeans on the leg, he’d have had the top Illinois agricultural crops represented.)

Comment by Cricket Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 4:15 pm

  37. No tattoo.

I don’t feel I’m cool enough to pull it off. And honestly I don’t know what I would get. I have noticed that what I really like in the present is something I won’t be all that interested in in 5-10 years.

Comment by Occasionally Moderated Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 4:20 pm

  38. None, never wanted one. No kids either, never wanted one. And no piercings, never wanted one. Suddenly I’m feeling introspective.

Comment by Earnest Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 4:25 pm

  39. “Do you have any tattoos?”

    Nope.

Attractive ones are expensive and that’s never felt like the best use of my money — too many bands to see.

  40. I don’t have a tattoo. I’m in the same demo as 47th (though no longer the same ward) and for the longest time, I was very personally opposed to getting one because of the permanence and potential wrinkling.

My wife got her third or fourth about 10 years ago and it’s a banger. I love it and it made me want one. But to this day, I cannot decide what, if anything, I want on my body *forever*

Comment by Joe Bidenopolous Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 4:51 pm

  41. One tattoo on my forearm, “together ALWAYS”.

Five years ago my wife of 40 years suffered a stroke and couldn’t speak, but she had her intellect. One morning when I visited, she had written “together ALWAYS” on a pad of paper during the night. I saved it. Two weeks after I lost her, Tattoo.

Comment by Langhorne Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 4:53 pm

  42. No tats. Got enough scars from various activities. Just added a nice TKR about 3 months ago. It’s still purple. That count?

Comment by zatoichi Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 4:55 pm

  43. No, mostly because I don’t know anything I feel strongly enough about to want permanently on my body. (Also body hair means limited places where one would look good, regardless)

Comment by Homebody Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 4:59 pm

  44. No, I wouldn’t think of doing something like that. My father received one when he was in the Marines in WW 2. He regretted it the rest of his life and always preached to us how foolish he had been. That lesson stuck.

    Comment by Paris 2 Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 5:04 pm

  45. == One tattoo on my forearm, “together ALWAYS”.==

PLEASE MAKE SURE TO READ LANGHORNE @4:53.

    What a great story.

To the post: I don’t have one. Not into pain. And apparently, I’ve also never met anyone I’ve loved that much. But maybe now, if I did, I would.

Comment by SouthSide Markie Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 5:11 pm

  46. I like tattoos but no, I don’t have any because I am allergic to many dyes and if I have a reaction it would be pretty bad.

Comment by Manchester Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 5:16 pm

  47. Yes… I have a little ink. No, ain’t no pretender gonna see my tattoo…..

Comment by Ducky LaMoore Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 5:21 pm

  48. No.
I was in a line of work while in the Army years ago where identifying marks like tattoos were disqualifying. That created a life-long bias against getting a tattoo. I have friends who are thoroughly inked top to bottom, but I couldn’t get one when young and foolish and am not interested now that I’m old and foolish.

Comment by Flapdoodle Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 5:22 pm

  49. No tatts. I have not found anyone who will do a tattoo like I want it. Everyone wants to make it “creative”. All I wanted was my parachute wings, nothing fancy but meaningful to me.

After my dog passed I have been looking thru photos of her trying to find the perfect one I would get. Any I would get would be hidden in business attire as I work with everyone from tradesman to CEO’s.

Comment by FormerParatrooper Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 6:17 pm

  50. No tattoos but from a certain angle and in a certain light, my age spots kinda look like one.

Comment by Sir Reel Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 6:29 pm

  51. No tattoos because I have enough things I regret.

Thank you, Big Dipper, for the link. I didn’t know this. DeVore and Colt deserve each other.

Comment by Don't Bloc Me In Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 6:51 pm

  52. Devore’s tattoos have convinced me to never get inked.

Comment by danray Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 7:02 pm

  53. Langhorne - great story. Thinking about you.

Comment by Norseman Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 7:40 pm

  54. took 53 years to decide on one. Back in the day like someone else we were discouraged from them in the Army as identifying marks.

Now, its for me. Don’t know if I’ll get another one or not. I always told myself I had to like it for more than 3 weeks

Comment by todd Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 7:42 pm

  55. No tattoos. It doesn’t seem like a good use of money and permanent markings.

==And don’t get me started on body piercing…==

No piercings either. I already have the correct number of holes in my body.

Comment by Radio Frequency Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 7:50 pm

  56. ===I’m close to Rich in age (younger though, heh)===

    You look much older. Heh.

Langhorne, that was such a sweet comment. It brought a tear to my eyes.

    Bob Meter, c’est la vie

Comment by Rich Miller Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 9:52 pm

  57. I had a day, today… checking in… started reading before hitting the rack.

    - Langhorne -

I’d like to say it was the day I had that made your comment finish me, but the truth is you got me, and I wasn’t ready. Thank you.

Me? No ink. No reason I don’t have ink. - Langhorne - reminds me here, there are stories, just need to hear them.

Comment by Oswego Willy Monday, Sep 12, 22 @ 10:28 pm

  58. No tats, but my son has 2 or 3.

Probably about a decade ago, I was having a chat with the deacon after church. Her youngest daughter had just gotten a tattoo. Both the deacon and I did not understand the appeal, and we were in agreement that in about 30 years, the old folks home will not be a good looking place. How many 80 year old grannies are going to regret their tramp stamps?

    Comment by Lynn S. Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 12:44 am

  59. No, because I’m a needle coward. Yet I still have the stones to get the Covid vaccines

Comment by Gruntled University Employee Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 7:12 am

  60. Heavily tattooed. Many years in the military, family and world travel have inspired my art. Some folks write journals. Me, I get tattooed.

Comment by oifredleg Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 7:58 am

  61. Thank you for sharing in the story and sentiment behind my tattoo, “together ALWAYS”. The tattoo is all the more meaningful, because it is in her handwriting.

People see it, ask, and are surprised how the back story gets to them.

Comment by Langhorne Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 9:01 am

  62. No tattoos myself, but I have no problem with people who do have them.
