Congrats to Chicago on winning Best Big City designation from Conde Nast Traveler for 6 years in a row. It’s sad how mad online this makes some people.

Illini football is respectable and selling tickets, Chicago is #1 best big city for the sixth time and JB Pritzker is still the best Governor in the U.S. It feels good to be here.

A “3.5” point favorite (not a typo) Illini hosts an Iowa team that’s 3-2… the Illini are 4-1… and it’s been a real treat watching the Illini win and how delicious would it be beating Wisconsin *and* Iowa back to back.
Can’t wait till Saturday.

===Congrats to Chicago on winning Best Big City designation from Conde Nast Traveler for 6 years in a row.===
I saw this rummaging thru the Tweeter machine.
The loathing in Illinois… by Illinoisans is likely one of the Top 3 Things I’d change if I could wave a wand.
Congrats, Chicago.

Loved hearing that the Barefoot Restaurant reopened in Hardin.
It was a staple in the community for over 40 years and was shut down in 2019 due to major flooding nearly destroying the original building.
The restaurant sold in 2020 and new ownership bought an old doctor’s office closer to higher ground in town and reopened on Sunday and saw almost 1,000 people through its doors.
As a reference, Calhoun County’s population is about 4,400 people. Hardin only has a population of about 800 people.
The restaurant is a boon to the community and to have it back is great to see.
If you are looking for the best catfish along the Illinois River, the Barefoot arguably has the best.

What’s with the jump in gas prices again? Filled up for the first time a couple weeks and just realized we’re above $4 again. 🤔

I have a feeling many of my carefully tended fully formed large beautiful green tomatoes are not going to ripen on the vine. We need what is known as Indian Summer weather here in Northern Illinois.

Yom Kippur started at sundown last night. Somehow, zero Republican statewide candidates have mentioned it on Facebook or Twitter. Not a huge scandal, but a small sign of how Republicans have stopped trying to win new votes.

If in Hardin, don’t forget the llinois Riverdock Restaurant as well as Barefoot. It stayed open when the area was last flooded. Food is great and the folks are hardworking.
Please, please get this area reliable internet service.

Responsa: Dip those sliced green tomatoes in batter and deep fry them. Delicious.

Get ready for it to jump some more. OPEC is going to cut supplies. And since oil is a global commodity and the price is based on global conditions the cost of oil is going to shoot up.

My mom used to pickle the green tomatoes every fall.

I’m always so sad when the Sox season is over.
Comment by Amalia Wednesday, Oct 5, 22 @ 10:10 am
Thankfully Illinois has taken steps to move away from fossil fuels and OPEC doings. The current gas vehicle is the last one I’ll own, as it’s reasonable to expect growth in electric/hybrid vehicles with all the green investment since the federal infrastructure bill was enacted. This includes Illinois’ new climate law and rebates for electric vehicle purchases.

Mercifully, the Sox Season ends today. It was a great disappointment, while I respect TLR for leaving in a very classy fashion, he was awful

just read in the great Dale Bowman column in the Sun Times that a hunter named Jose Guzman took down the first deer in 150 years in Chicago territory, bow and arrow. the article is truly worth a read (Bowman always great) because it gives excellent information on conservation and hunting.

Up where I live near the Cheddar Curtain, it’s to be honest, a lot more common to see people wearing UWM garb than U of I. Yesterday when I was out for breakfast I saw a man come in wearing a sharp looking U of I sweater. So Illini football must be doing good.

Tomato growers: If a tomato has begun ripening in any way, even before it’s started blushing, it has produced enough of the (ethylene?) gas to finish the ripening if it’s stored properly. Very green tomatoes, as has already been pointed out, are candidates for pickling/canning, either on their own or as ingredients in relishes. My fave is fermented green cherry tomatoes, an old-fashioned deli treat that goes great with pastrami sandwiches.

Anyone read the WSJ Editorial about the Illinois School System. Wow, some shocking and depressing numbers…

Ah…The Barefoot
Many years ago the first time I officiated football at Hardin high school the AD came into the cramped office where we were changing clothes and asked for our order. I had no idea what he was talking about and one of my crew mates told him to get me the fritter plate. After the game we headed to the Barefoot and sat at a table with sign reading reserved for officials. As soon as we sat down our food was delivered, fritter plate for me. The school picked up the check and even paid for a couple of pitchers of beer. unfortunately buying the beer ended years ago but the dinner was provided until the Barefoot closed. May have to schedule a Hardin game before I hang up my stripes for the last time.

Speaking of the WSJ blast on the WirePoints “study” suggest that duo needs some steady follow up.
Meanwhile Cards did a come back last night and won in 10 innings and Albert got more RBI…final day of reg season is here.

The weather has been great these last few days. The temperature swings from the low 40s to low 70s are really something.

Forget the line, bet the under (36.5). Iowa offense is trash. Could be Ferentz last year. Illini might be real-ish. Hoping for an “Iowa Touchdown” (1 FG, 2 safeties).
I’m still honked off that I couldn’t bet the under on Northwestern-Penn State last week. It was probably the best play in CFB last week - 64 points. Game finished 17-7. Such a dumb law

Golly, I just love college football is all…
I wouldn’t take action on the under, nope, or believe the Illini would cover. I would never say such things.
:)

Thanks Yinn: I had not heard of fermented green cherry tomatoes. I’m going to look up a recipe for that. I’m a big fan of fermentation; been making sauerkraut and kimchee for years, fermented hot peppers last year, and then there’s the rice wine for 25+ years. Fermentation Sciences at SIUC is expanding. They are adding fermentation space and a store for selling products.

Re: Green tomatoes
Find a recipe for fried green tomatoes, and then grab a copy of Fried Green Tomatoes, a novel by Fannie Flagg, who used to be on Candid Camera.
