PPP also polled the abortion issue

Posted in:

* WBEZ

As states around the country adopt stricter restrictions on abortion with the overturning of Roe v. Wade, more than half of Illinois voters say abortion should remain legal here, according to a new WBEZ/Chicago Sun-Times Poll.

About 52% of likely voters polled said abortion should be legal in most or all cases, with 36% saying it should be illegal, and 12% unsure.

As with other stories on this PPP poll, the piece was light on actual numbers. For instance, this really doesn’t say much at all….

Respondents who live in the collar counties or downstate were more likely than Chicagoans to say abortion should be mostly or completely illegal. Opponents of legalized abortion in the poll also have less education than those who support abortion.

OK, fine, but what are the numbers?

  1. This is a graph, and words tied to it, you’d find from a crafty junior high student who decides to do a 6-week project in one night and realized the rubric requires analytic measures with a graph.

    Sure, the rubric ask is met, I have no idea how to extrapolate what it means.

    The junior high student gets an A

  2. Only 10% of Illinois residents support no exception to an abortion ban if the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest or will harm the mother. No wonder that some Republicans like Greg Hart in DuPage County have recently moved away from a complete ban on abortion to allowing women the right to choose (gee thanks Greg for coming around after getting your poll results). Are there other GOP candidates that are attempting to buck the Trump Republican’s and the religious right’s push for a complete nationwide ban on abortion without any exceptions?

  3. Taking the 1 in 10 position on such a hot button issue is a bold strategy.

  4. I’d be curious what percentage of that 10% are male respondents or dealing with the topic in the abstract.

  5. I bet a large number of the “illegal in most cases” people have a skewed perception of how many abortions occur and when they occur. I know past questions to people about, in particular, late term abortions showed that the population (and notably and especially the anti-abortion population) wildly overestimated how many of those kinds of abortions occurred, and how those almost universally related to life threatening medical conditions.
