* State Sen. Michael Hastings’ campaign denies attempt to mislead with letter from sister who shares his ex-wife’s name: “This was not intentional to make it sound like it was coming from his ex-wife,” spokesman Ray Hanania said. While the letter doesn’t specify the family relationship to the senator, Hanania said Michael Hastings had previously said on social media the letter came from one of his sisters.

* Gary Grasso: Moderate Republicans can win races in Illinois — if they raise their voices: Once we stop handing the tools to Democrats to label all Republicans as too extreme, we will be able to effectively focus on Democrats’ failed policies and giveaways, porous borders, conciliatory policies toward countries that want to harm us and soft-on-crime prosecutors. And we will win on the issues that matter. Let’s turn the tables rather than repeatedly plow headlong into the Democratic playbook.

* After Madigan’s not guilty plea, Republicans warn more corruption charges could be ahead: “My guess is that we will see some more entities down the road who will suffer the same fate of as CommonWealth Edison and AT&T all at the hands of Mike Madigan and also his enablers that are currently running the House of Representatives,” Durkin said during a virtual news conference after Madigan’s plea Tuesday.

* Illinoisans to use six types of voting machines in upcoming election: At polling places across the state, Illinois voters will use one of six different voting machines. The Democracy Suite 5.6-D, the EVS 5.5.0.3 machine, the Unity 3.4.1.1 machine, GEMS 1.18.24 machine, Verity Voting 2.6 machine, or the OpenElect 2.1.0.2 voting machine will all be used in the coming week. Illinois Board of Elections spokesman Matt Dietrich said the voting machines are vetted before use.

* Popularity of mail ballots continues increasing as voter turnout looks to match 2018 midterms: “Now we’re looking healthier,” Chicago Board of Election Commissioners spokesperson Max Bever said. “Compared to 2018, we’re nipping at the heels.” One week ahead of Election Day, Nov. 8, voters are increasingly using mail ballots to make their selections, a trend experts say could point to permanent changes.

* Highland Park shooting: Prosecutors give defense attorneys 2,500 pages of evidence: The update came at the first court hearing since August for Robert Crimo III, who has been charged with more than 100 felonies in the shooting. Authorities say Crimo also wounded dozens of other people by firing a semi-automatic rifle into the crowd watching the Highland Park holiday parade. Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Ben Dillon said prosecutors have given more than 2,500 pages of written material to the defense, along with audio and video recordings. They are expecting to tender a substantial amount of additional discovery material within the next few days.

* Some Dem leaders want to dump Cook County’s chief judge: But political insiders confirm some activity is occurring, with two pols going public with their call to fire Evans: 42nd Ward Ald. and Democratic Committeeman Brendan Reilly, and Michele Smith, who recently stepped down as alderman of the adjoining 43rd Ward. Ald. Brian Hopkins, 2nd, says he, too, is urging voters in his ward to join in the dump Evans move. “He’s made a mess of the court system and turned it into a revolving door that’s endangering my constituents,” said Reilly, referring to an order Evans issued several years ago that directs judges to avoid imposing cash bail. “He needs to go.”

* Chicago area election judges prepare for midterms as FBI warns of nationwide threats: Local election officials tell the I-Team they have not had any threats against election workers here in Illinois. Just last month, the FBI issued a warning about election worker threats tied to the midterms across the country. Election workers surveyed by experts at the Brennan Center are also sounding the alarm.

* Illinois 6th Congressional District race is one of many where candidates are preaching to choirs rather than persuading: Why are we seeing this new trend of candidates speaking largely to their base?” Ruby: “It’s very safe to stay within the same rhetoric; to stay within the same group of people who understand. But that’s not what politics is all about.”

* Illinois Supreme Court consolidates 58 lawsuits filed by state’s attorneys challenging SAFE-T Act: Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow announced Monday that 58 individual lawsuits filed by state’s attorneys in Illinois, who are challenging the SAFE-T Act, have been consolidated in the Circuit Court of Kankakee County.

* How anti-Pritzker PAC is trying to suppress the Black vote in Chicago: It’s an old-school political technique — in the days before a vote, put election flyers under car windshield wipers. They are likely to be read since they are hard for a driver to ignore. In a parking lot in Bronzeville last week outside the Lake Meadows apartments,a multitude of yellow flyers — designed to look like road warning signs — were on cars in this heavily Black and overwhelmingly Democratic community.

* With 1 week to go, Pritzker and Bailey campaign in suburbs: With one week before the election, Pritzker is picking a fight with Bailey over accepting the election results. Governor Pritzker’s campaign manager sent the Bailey team a letter dated Oct. 31 pledging to accept the results of the election “win or lose.” “Election denialism is a dark plague that threatens the very foundation of our democracy,” Mike Ollen wrote. Bailey told WGN News he has made that commitment and pointed to speculation that Pritzker is eying a White House run in 2024.

* Pritzker names retired CPD Chief to Prisoner Review Board: Jeff Grubbs will join the board after serving nearly 30 years with the Carbondale Police Department, retiring as Chief in 2020. Grubbs’ appointment comes as the Prisoner Review Board faces tough questions about its makeup, with Republicans calling on the governor and Democratic leaders in the Senate to be more transparent about the nominations and confirmations.

* In district that has Highland Park, Schneider, Severino differ on how to prevent mass shootings: Weeks after the July 4 shooting in his hometown of Highland Park, 10th District incumbent Democrat Brad Schneider led an effort in the House to revive an expired ban on assault-style weapons. The measure hasn’t yet cleared the Senate. Schneider also has called for universal background checks, gun safety education, mental health services, and better training and equipping of first responders — all part of what he calls a “wholistic approach” to addressing gun violence.

* ‘We Cannot Continue to Normalize This’: Activists, Alderman Outraged At Garfield Park Mass Shooting: At least 14 people were hit by gunfire, including three children. A woman was also injured trying to escape when she was hit by an oncoming car. “It began, then it is over in about three seconds,” said Supt. David Brown at a press conference Monday night. “A car is pulling out after driving by and shooting randomly really into the crowd.”

* Vigil planned as CPD continues search for those responsible in East Garfield Park shooting: A vigil is planned Wednesday, as Chicago police continue to look for the gunman behind a shooting incident Monday night in East Garfield Park that injured 15. One of the most seriously injured victims of that shooting is hospitalized at Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.

* Why Cook County residents are being asked to pay more taxes for forest preserves: The county’s forest preserve system is the first and largest of its kind in the country, making up about 11% of Cook County. A coalition of more than 150 organizations that support the quest for additional funds laud the environmental and human health benefits of the preserves, which advocates say became particularly evident during the isolation of the pandemic.

* Superintendent Brown finally responds to Chicago cop deployment study: Another study is needed, he says.: More than a year after he was given an analysis that raised questions about the effectiveness of Chicago police patrol response and assignments, Superintendent David Brown is now calling the study lacking, and he announced that he plans to seek his own officer deployment evaluation.

* Democrats push hard to cement GOP’s ‘super-duper’ minority on Cook County Board: The question is whether Republicans will claw back one of the seats it lost four years ago or lose even more ground, most notably a seat for Chicago’s Far Northwest Side and northwest suburbs that has been held by a retiring Republican for more than a quarter century.

* Artist Nick Cave tackles a new challenge: Making tiny, artful cheesecakes with Eli’s Cheesecake: The medium may indeed be the message, as Marshall McLuhan once told us, but what to make of a recent morning watching a group of people making messages and then eating them with delight? Esteemed artist Nick Cave was standing alongside his creative and life partner Bob Faust inside Eli’s Cheesecake bakery/retail shop/cafe on the city’s Northwest Side. * This time, Rick Hahn — not Jerry Reinsdorf — picks Pedro Grifol to be the new Chicago White Sox manager: The Chicago White Sox managerial search ended with a stunning pick two years ago when Tony La Russa was brought out of retirement at age 76 to try to take them to the promised land. General manager Rick Hahn issued the announcement, but everyone knew the decision had been made by Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf, who bypassed his own GM for a chance at a storybook ending — watching his old pal at the helm of a World Series champion on the South Side.

* Pritzker Administration Launches Effort to Strengthen Children’s Mental Health Care: The Administration of Governor JB Pritzker announced today it is launching a new state program designed to help pediatricians and other providers meet children’s mental health needs by strengthening mental health services in emergency departments and schools.

* New home sales plunge: Sales of new homes in the Chicago area dropped in the third quarter to their lowest in almost four years, due in large part to supply being depleted by the pandemic housing boom.

* Trump talks Chicago crime while commenting on Pelosi attack: “With Paul Pelosi, that’s a terrible thing. With all of them it’s a terrible thing,” Trump said, before blaming an overall rise in crime. “Look at what happened to San Francisco generally. Look at what’s happening in Chicago,” he said, adding that the crime situation here is “far worse than Afghanistan.”

* Lincoln political letter from 1843 goes on display: The 1843 letter details Lincoln’s political frustrations. The future president wrote it to Martin Morris, a friend from New Salem. The public’s only access to the letter was a copy Morris made — with many spelling errors — given to Lincoln’s law partner William Herndon.

Now to dig *in* to that briefing… pack a breakfast.

Welp, only “Center Square” would be fascinated by the multiple types of “machines” used for an election.

Before this comment of mine is seen as unfair, look exactly at what needs to be in the work;

Now, this idea that there’s a possibility of the machines being “this or that”, it seems like a calming type of piece, but any grain of possible issues is now sewn in, “they used 6 different types, well, that can only mean…”

It doesn’t read like a reassuring. It reads like a left handed warning to where these or those machines will be.

from the Tribune super super minority piece “Podgorski downplayed his positions. He said he’s given abortion access in the county “almost no thought. I don’t know how I could change anything on the county level if I wanted to,” said he “held his nose” in voting for Trump in 2020 and said he hasn’t paid attention to the U.S. House Jan. 6 committee hearings.” And yet Mr. Ogden and Fry is a leader of the extreme conservative NW Side GOP a super Trump group. Putting Podgorski on the County Board would be a huge change from Pete Silvestri, a pro choice R vote.

I could not agree more. I have not been able to support a Republican Candidate for Governor in way too long. George Ryan caused me to vote for a Democrat for Governor for the first time, and after the destruction that he brought to us, I have never regretted that decision.
I believe Pritzker could have been beat this year, with a good candidate. This is happening across the country, but not in Illinois. The difference here is a party still wandering around in darkness. In NY, MI, and AZ, incumbent Democrat Governors are in trouble of being upset. It could have happened here with a Candidate that isn’t a clown show. Until the IL GOP can field decent State-wide Candidates this will continue.

Pat Dowell (3rd), whose ward includes Bronzeville, said the blatant use of race in the signs and leaflets was a form of “subliminal voter suppression.”… One interpretation could be that it’s just an attempt to persuade Black voters to support Bailey. However, since the fear-mongering flyers and signs do not push Bailey’s candidacy, the strategy appears to be to depress Black voter turnout for Pritzker, political operatives said”

The Dems are getting a bit goofy in their criticism. The PAC is using a standard approach to win an election - to win you need to get more votes for your candidate which this PAC has done with other signs and ads; and by trying to create a lack of enthusiasm for citizens to vote for your opponent – which this sign does. Nothing subliminal about that.

Are you saying the AZ gubernatorial nominee isn’t a clown?

Keep in mind as you tout these three examples, Illinois’ nominee is in line with these three, and 56+% of Illinois Republicans are voting for the same qualities found in the example you mention as acceptable… just found in Bailey.

Of course, the NY Governor ascended to office after the Cuomo scandal, the MI Governor is pretty favored for re-election (in a state much more purple than Illinois), and AZ…does not have an incumbent Democratic Governor. So these aren’t really apples-to-apples comparisons, and to the extent that they are, they don’t support your point.

I do, in general, agree that ILGOP would be better off to turn away from the Baileys and back toward the Thompsons, but they’ve been headed this way for awhile. And frankly, Pritzker is a strong incumbent. There’s a reason why no major moderate Republican wanted to take him on.

No one said otherwise, and indeed the article mentions several times that this is not a new tactic. But it also says that this is designed to get black voters to not vote, and you even concede that.

You also seem to gloss over the quotes from voters where they say they’re insulted by the fliers, or that they think they’re lies. It’s curious why you would be so distortive.

So, you’re criticizing “Dems” and leaving out the voters that agree with them for saying something that you agree is true.

If nothing else, you’ve convinced me that you’re familiar with “goofy criticism”.

This is certainly true. Would he have beat Pritzker? We’ll never know, though I have my doubts.

(And also, Bailey could still beat Pritzker. I haven’t heard the bell yet.)

Mayor Irvin? Maybe coulda made it a race, if he wasn’t “Raunered” by the pouty Right who could have chosen to abandon Mayor Irvin like Rauner, had Mayor Irvin ran as Mayor Irvin and won.

Candidate Irvin was the 2nd worst in the cycle only bested by Anna Valencia, who won that distinction, hands down.

It’s good to see, so far, that Irvin is likely set up to face minimal opposition in his next run.

“Look at what’s happening in Chicago”

Look at what happened on Jan. 6, that this person caused. He was acquitted politically by the “law and order” party, a verdict strongly supported by the ILGOP.

It’s reported that homicides and shootings are down in Chicago, on the TV news very recently and in the link below. But apparently that doesn’t stop the lovely “religious” people from taking delight in their fear and hatred of the city. Chicago is a go-to for the GOP to stoke the base.

Easy for me to say since I don’t live there, but the increase for the Cook County Forest Preserve should be a no-brainer.

Whoever set that system up in Cook County deserves a monument, the natural resources in a highly urban county that have been protected are a gift.

For what it is worth, I have voted for the Forest Preserve increases in my own county.

One week before the election but better than never for several powerful north side alderman to push back on Judge Tim Evans.

They are campaigning against his retention for his failed directive to eliminate cash bail several ago in Cook County

So much for the ruse we have no idea how the SAFE T act will perform because it hasn’t taken effect yet

The Republican candidate for Governor in Arizona was a registered Democrat and campaign contributor to John Kerry and Barack Obama before leaving the party 10 years ago

If she wins it will be because the majority of voters in Arizona thought her opponent who refused to debate was a bigger clown

One more example of Democrats subterfuge of supporting extreme candidates in primaries failing spectacularly

She literally did. An unnamed source said Biden “may” be coming here. That’s absolutely rumor-mongering.

And she says it may be on Friday, but it’s already midday Wednesday, so when they gonna announce this thing? I’d imagine they’d need a few minutes to coordinate schedules and build a crowd.
