House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch released the following statement Monday:
“The people of Illinois have called on House Democrats to continue our efforts to move our state forward, and with the support of an expanded Democratic Caucus, I’m proud to say that I have secured the necessary votes to continue these efforts as Speaker of the House. I’m honored by the trust my colleagues and my neighbors have placed in me, and I’m ready to build on the progress we have made in the past two years.
“Thanks to Democrats we have taken significant steps to get our fiscal house in order and help families make ends meet amid turbulent global markets. We’ve expanded resources for our community outreach programs and law enforcement to help keep families safe. We’ve invested in our students and teachers, and taken steps to rebuild confidence in state government. And we’ve made it clear that Illinois will always protect the right to choose, no matter what extremist judges say. We have more work to do– and with a strong, diverse, and talented Democratic Caucus alongside me, I am excited to continue the work Illinoisans have sent us to do.”

LOL Moe.
Welch deserves to take a victory lap, but he needs to quietly heed the practice of the former speaker who shall not be named, i.e. try to keep the caucus from going crazy with spending and extreme policy ideas.
We’re in for rougher economic times.

Sorry, but has that happened so far? The SAFE-T Act is a lot of things, but I don’t think extreme is the right word. Controversial, maybe. Progressive, yes. Extreme? No.
The voters of Illinois have made their voices heard; they’ve seen how well the GA and the Governor have done and want more! I’m excited for what’s next. And I don’t anticipate rougher economic times because of the IL Dems.

AND ECW could toss 19 into a mix bowl and nearly elect a “Compromise” as Capt Fax reports…”The House Democrats are on track to take 77-78 seats (Elmhurst Republican Rep. Deanne Mazzochi is still trailing), so 21 is the minimum McCombie needs to win.”
BTW Rule 2 could be suspended too.

I think this is good news. Congrats to Welch.
Maybe now he can ditch the quotation marks, which bring to mind Lar “America First” Daly. And the lesser known John J. “Jack” Jacobsen.

Waking up this morning, I’m reminded how well Welch took the gavel and how “quietly” Welch also took control, without real noise, without real pushback.
