The Illinois State Board of Elections on Monday certified the results of the Nov. 8 General Election, in which more than 4.1 million voters cast ballots for a turnout statewide of 51.06 percent.
The certification also confirmed passage of an amendment to the Illinois Constitution guaranteeing workers the right to collective bargaining. The amendment passed with 53.42 percent “yes” votes among all ballots cast.
Based on pre-election ballot reports, the State Board of Elections estimates that more than 39 percent of the ballots cast in the 2022 General Election were cast before Election Day, with about 18 percent cast by mail and 21 percent cast early in person. By contrast, the 2018 midterms had roughly 34 percent of ballots cast before Election Day, with 9 percent of the total vote cast by mail and 25 percent cast early in person. The 51.06 percent statewide turnout — 4,144,125 ballots cast by 8,115,751 total registered voters – was the fourth lowest midterm turnout of the last 40 years. (See chart below for details.)

If my memory is correct 1982 was the last time you could vote a straight ticket with just one vote (Punch 10). That seemed to affect voting.

I’m old enough to remember when depressed midterm elections were the want and desire of the GOP in Illinois. It was a strategy and seen too as almost a concession to statewide race losses for Dems.
Then again, when 56+% choose as it’s nominee a Trump acolyte who is pro-life, and willing to do ads using a weapon to show how strong he is to the 2nd amendment..
I just don’t think “crime” was a winning strategy either.

Turnout was 6th “highest” of the last 10 gubernatorial elections? Strong incumbent Dems and relatively weak and underfunded Repubs? No real Cook Countywide races? Seems normal to me.

Convictions for fraud
There were “62 indictments and 58 convictions, many involving precinct captains and election officials. The grand jury concluded that 100,000 fraudulent votes had been cast in the city … Authorities found massive fraud involving vote buying and ballots cast by others in the names of registered voters. In one case, a ballot punched for the Democratic slate had been tabulated 198 times.”[6] The case was prosecuted in November 1982 by US Attorney Dan K. Webb.[7][8]
The gubernatorial election result has been questioned. Some Democrats have alleged that fraud might have been committed by Republicans in areas outside Chicago to secure Thompson his victory.[7] In 2016, Rudy Giuliani suggested that the gubernatorial results had been fraudulent on the part of Chicago Democrats.[9]
In January 1983, the Illinois Supreme Court rejected a petition by Democratic gubernatorial nominee Adlai Stevenson III for a full statewide recount, with the majority opinion finding there to be insufficient evidence of either mistakes, fraud, or irregularities to warrant a recount[10]

To me nothing really was happening that was not going to be known. This does not surprise me at all and frankly if things don’t get better, it might go down faster. Illinois could be doing worse giving the situation but the GOP is effectively stopped in it’s tracks.

Why does the official canvass show 4,144,125 total ballots cast on p. ii but 4,142,642 ballots cast on p. 4?
