Gov. J.B. Pritzker is swinging for the fences when it comes to Stellantis.
As he works with the Legislature for additional tools to lure and retain automotive jobs, including a new “deal closing” fund and tax credits, Pritzker hinted he’s trying to land an auto-assembly plant and a battery factory in Belvidere. […]
Stellantis is the largest property tax payer in Boone County, near Rockford, where its plant is located. It paid $1.9 million in property taxes this year and owns about 249 acres under and around its factory. EV plants with battery factories nearby can be 10 times that size. Hyundai’s new vehicle and battery plants in Georgia are on a 2,900-acre site. Rivian’s planned vehicle and battery plants are on nearly 2,000 acres However, the Stellantis facility sits across Interstate 90 from a vast swath of farmland.
The Rivian and Hyundai projects are valued at about $5.5 billion each and promise to create about 7,500 manufacturing jobs apiece. But they’ve also garnered huge incentives, totaling about $1.5 billion for each project.

Yes, it is worth it to get something established at Belvidere ASAP. It has some advantages, they can re-tool the factory faster than starting from scratch, and they have a work force available in the area. Once a company builds a factory in another state, there is less chance of them locating here.

This isn’t WW II, in that nobody is going to re tool Belvedere on a short enough time scale to help the plant workers and families. Retooling is super expensive. And there’s a lot of factors in a decision like this, labor law being only one. I wish JB luck but this plant is not going to survive in a form you’ll recognize. His efforts may bear fruit for future situations like this so keep at It.

He should consider taking a hard look at what we can do to be the state most prepared to address what’s next. New battery technology, for example.

What carnival barker made that map anyway?
It’s not just labor law, it’s taxes, regulatory and legal climate and Illinois is just not competitive any of those.
But yea now we have worker rights amendment in our constitution but not much good if private sector employers are fleeing

It takes years to acquire enough land, get past hearings on re-zoning, EPA impact statements, permits, etc…. Re-tooling is expensive, but the automakers did it about every 5 years or so when they made major changes to their models. Other factors that would help Belvidere is it is on an interstate highway, and also has rail service already there.

Funny how all those right wing states that have the blessings of liberty in the form so-called right-to-work, kid gloves regulations, etc, and still felt compelled to sweeten the pot with 9 figure subsidies that state taxpayers are stuck with many of those locust entities using moving (primarily) south on the way to Mexico as soon as the subsidies run dry.
