  1. Eagerly anticipating the results of an investigation of a sheriff deputy’s involvement in a high speed pursuit last month. The deputy bumped the car on a rural route, causing the car to leave the road and eject the driver, who died at the scene. The incident occurred on Jan. 27th, and there has been no word yet on why the pursuit, why the car was bumped (rather than an road block in the next town), etc. The reports are hopefully coming soon. No word, no comment, no information is not a good policy.

  8. @H-W===sheriff deputy’s involvement in a high-speed pursuit last month===

    What county did this happen in?

    Comment by DuPage Thursday, Mar 30, 23 @ 9:28 am

  9. @ DuPage

    McDonough County. The incident occurred on January 27th, and was not reported anywhere until February 6th or so. That delay was shocking. You would think an officer involved homicide would have been reported to the news, right?

    The actual police report was released to the media on the 6th, but did not provide much information; just that the deputy bumped the car, it over turned.

    Subsequently, the Sheriff told the media there would be not comment on the incident, and that the IL State Police was investigating the incident.

    Crickets since the incident. The deceased live in the Wood River area, near St. Louis. I have since learned that the deceased apparently came to Macomb to see his ex- and his children. The story is that he was told to leave, did not, she called the police, he fled. Then the pursuit.

    That’s all just rumor at this point, however. Nothing official. Just the officer involved pursuit, the bumping, the officer involved homicide, and the name of the deceased are official statements.

  10. ==and that the IL State Police was investigating the incident.==

    ==Crickets since the incident. ==

    If it’s being investigated then there wouldn’t be information provided. You don’t let the public in on an investigation while it is ongoing for crying out loud.

  11. Beautiful and sunny. The calm before the storm perhaps if the forecasts for tomorrow are accurate.

  12. Just the other day there was serious concern raised about train derailments along the (previously Elgin, Joliet and Eastern) CN, which was being merged with another railroad. Possibly Illinois could enact lower speed limits for trains carrying hazardous tank cars. It almost seems another day, another train derailment.

    No need for condescension this early in the morning. Wait until the afternoon.

    That the ISP is investigating is not the problem. I am eagerly awaiting their report, I am not judging the ISP. I assume it will be forthcoming soon.

    The concern many have here is that the Sheriff did not notify the media or inform the community that there was a traffic fatality involving a deputy sheriff in the first place. That is the problem.

    That information was over a week in coming, and a lot of people here believe their should have been an announcement that an officer of the law was involved in a homicide, sooner than a week later.

    Many of us are waiting to find out why the father of two local children died, and was it necessary.

  14. ==that an officer of the law was involved in a homicide==

    Sounds to me that you have already made the determination that the officer is guilty of a crime. Otherwise you wouldn’t be using the term “homicide.” Homicide is a crime. The officer was involved in an incident that resulted in the death of a subject. Not a homicide.

  15. Good luck to the Cubs in their home opener. They had a decent second half of 2022, maybe they can build on that.

    Comment by Grandson of Man Thursday, Mar 30, 23 @ 10:18 am

  16. @ Demoralized

    That the actions of the officer caused the death of another person is not in dispute. The word homicide literally implies the causing or taking of a life.

    Whether or not it was justifiable has not been determined, which is why I am waiting for the report. Your assumption that I am assuming guilt is false. I am assuming responsibility, and awaiting an explanation.

    So as Rich likes to say, let’s just move on.

  17. ==The word homicide literally implies the causing or taking of a life==

    Illegally. It’s a criminal term. So just stop already. You’re clearly anti-police. Have the guts to admit it.

    Hopefully it’s an exciting baseball season for Sox and Cub fans. The shorter games might even drag me back to watching some on TV.

  20. Picking up the mail. Brandon Johnson postcard described Paul Vallas suggesting that Vallas was the endorsed Republican candidate.

    Last time that I looked, Chicago municipal races are nonpartisan and the City GOP did not make an actual formal endorsement.

  21. Re the Demoralized vs H-W discussion of homicide. Unless there is a specific IL definition (which a quick Google search did not unearth) H-W is correct. For example, Indiana says:
    “101.1. Defining Homicide. Homicide is the killing of one human being by another human being. The word “homicide” is neutral: it merely means the killing of one human being by another human being.”

    Dictionaries agree with IN.

  22. Thanks Westburbs. As an aside, I am also anything but, anti-police. Very supportive in practice, actually. But not worth fighting about. Perhaps just a bad day.
