Pritzker says new budget accounts for AFSCME contract negotiations

* Gov. JB Pritzker was asked today about Republican claims that the newly signed state budget doesn’t account for union contract negotiations…

We built into the agencies’ budgets - we have, as you know, quite a number of agencies - we built in what we thought might be the appropriate amount of money for what we expect from that AFSCME negotiation. So that’s in the budget already. That’s a you know, once again, one of those false things that Republicans like to say about the budget, but it is in the budget.

Pritzker went on to say “we’re hopefully reaching a pinnacle” in the contract talks.

I’m sure AFSCME negotiators would be interested in the % increase that makes up the so-called appropriate amount.

Yeah, but they don’t meet every day. It’s usually 3 days every two weeks. Though they might be adding sessions now. There is still a lot to hammer out between now and then. Still being cautiously optimistic.

I don’t have any kind of inside track on the negotiations but I heard things are going well. I’m hoping we get a small bump in pay given that we are so understaffed. A lot of folks are wearing a lot of hats trying to keep the ship afloat. We’re still understaffed by thousands of jobs.

As someone who was on a negotiating team with the state, three weeks ain’t nothing.

We got more done one night in Peoria shortly before July 1rst than the previous two months combined.

I know Flyin Elvis. I’ve been there too. Just feeling a tad anxious is all. I have no doubt a fair deal will get hammered out. I just worry it might not be this month. But like you said, once it comes down to those final sessions, and people start staying up late, all sorts of things get dropped as everyone narrows in on what’s actually holding things up. Since consumer spending is the primary driver of economic growth, and there are thousands of state employees, the job creators need a decent contract.

Received an email from teamsters 916 that was along the lines of silent majority than honeybear. Got the sense that things were not going well at all.

Got the same letter from Teamsters 916. I interpreted it to be an attempt to gin up fear from the members with allusions to “taking breaks away and they are coming after your insurance.” There was also a statement to the effect that “we won’t agree to an extension of the current CBA if this attitude continues!” Come July 1st the union will say; we signed an extension, otherwise the remote pilot work plan would end, see we protected you.
Theater, pure theater.
