* I went outside for a few minutes yesterday without a mask, maybe that was a mistake…
This almost isn't even a fair comparison because visibility was *so* bad today. The left photo was taken late last spring. The right photo was taken through today's smoke #ChicagoWX #ILwx pic.twitter.com/M6O9oFms8W

Skipped the kids outdoor swim lessons due to air quality yesterday. Class normally has 18 in it but last night only had 11 show up. Today isn’t looking a whole lot better.

Can’t see across our field, and the smell is strong down in the river valleys.

Last even the moon looked like a blood moon, but I know there wasn’t a lunar eclipse. Still hazy this morn, still going to mask outside.

It’s actually raining. And it’s supposed to rain for an entire hour. Never thought I’d be so happy.

I was out all day yesterday and today sound like I smoked a pack of cigarettes - Will definitely be smarter next time.

The smoke is bad, even in Central Illinois. My kid’s summer camp had to change the schedule to keep them inside more.

The smoky air is giving me flashbacks to the 70’s.

Today is worse than yesterday; visibility is less than a mile. Did not think I would need the N95 for something like this.

It’s not only hazy from the smoke in the air in Sangamon County, but you can smell the smoke.
Hope the Canadians manage to get those fires under control soon. I can’t imagine how awful it smells up there.

Going to say it seems a bit better in the loop than it did yesterday.

It was never this bad back in the day. Last night the sunset was truly bizarre. Looking at neighborhood trees from afar it seemed fog was hanging. Nope. Smoke. It was a bad head day yesterday.

Yesterday our park district canceled all outdoor programming until further notice.
Despite having the house sealed up pretty well, I built a Corsi-Rosenthal Box filter to ease some of the air quality issues seeping in, because I highly doubt this is going to be the last time we are impacted by wildfire smoke.

On South DuSable Lake Shore Drive, this morning, looking at the lake, you couldn’t see a horizon line, and buildings east of downtown were barely visible. Everything smells like smoke. Last night, the moon was crimson.

I live in Springfield and you can see it here too. Was just outside with the dog. My word, hazy as can be and you can definitely smell it.

Also in Springfield, and it reminds me of driving near ADM/Staley growing up in the dirty D.

Went for a walk this morning and wore my mask after taking my nasal spray and a couple puffs of my inhaler. The things we have to do just to go outside.

Winds shifted - E/NE.
That oughta help a bit.

Got back from visiting all the grandkids and family in California. In a turn of weather events, the air was clear out there and I arrived just in time for the smoke here.

Down here in the big city it is horrible. Can barely see the skyline from my window, and it stinks of smoke everywhere. It gives an ominous feeling for sure.

driving north into Springfield on I55, you can usually see the hotel downtown. couldn’t see it yesterday or this morning

Still smoky outside. We’ve been in a atmospheric blocking pattern that’s keeping wind coming from Canada. We need the jet stream to shift or atmospheric pattern to change, where the upper winds come from the Gulf of Mexico, to push this stuff out of here. Winds are supposed to shift later today, per a weather forecast.

Air quality in the city is very bad. Usually a clear vision of the Hancock building but now covered in haze.

I plan to venture outside today just to go buy some coffee from the store, but I’m definitely skipping biking a couple miles to the gym. Just treating this as a cheat week until things clear up.

NW of Chicago near Elgin. It smells smokey and the haze is visible 100 ft. away. Definitely a time to stay indoors with filters running and wear a N95 mask outside.

Out for the morning bike ride and worse today in Mclean County. Seem not so bad to ride but after getting back home the eyes feel like they are coated.

I’d been idly looking at buying a car, and weighing whether hybrids and TVs were worth the extra cost. But the effects of climate change have clearly arrived. Might have to pony up to do my part.

It’s bad. The normal skyline view from the Kennedy, Ike, I-55 and I-90 is usually such an amazing sight on a clear day. seeing that skyline come in to the frame miles away from the city and keep getting larger and more intricate, is spectacular.
Today you can’t even see it less than a mile away and even then it’s a heavy shade of grey.

===it is horrible===
Yes, it is. I walked to a restaurant and back last night and was so sick this morning. Didn’t start feeling better until a couple of hours ago, kinda.
Two friends in Spfld also got terribly sick last night after spending time outside yesterday.
Comment by Rich Miller Wednesday, Jun 28, 23 @ 3:19 pm
It’s not just a hazy day.
There’s particulate in the smoke.
It gets in your lungs and it doesn’t come out.

It’s a little hazy here in at my secret hide-a-way in Iowa. The deer were confused yesterday and were out and about well before dusk.
