* This tweet received more than 200,000 views before it was finally labeled as false…
NEW: Governor Pritzker signed HB-17584 into law today, increasing consequences for vehicles parking in bike lanes.
Cars parked in bike lanes will:
- Have higher fines (up by 17%)
- Be subject to a boot or towing after 15 mins
- Have all damage and vandalism claims voided pic.twitter.com/NRZiZPkjIN— Sam (@samwightt) July 18, 2023
And it’s not like this governor would sign such a bill anyway.
* I’m hoping that this law firm was just playing along with the bit…

* The socialists loved it, of course…
Astounding. Just when you think he’s reached his final form, he pulses with more raw energy like he’s Goku. https://t.co/sWOVwbh9ut

* Mentioning the Senate probably kills all comments on this post…
Curious why the Senate didn't fix that problem

* And the fantasy isn’t confined to Illinois…
NEW: Governor Walz signed HB-17584 into law today, increasing consequences for vehicles parking in bike lanes.

Almost 49,000 views on that one, which Twitter has not yet called out for its falsehood.
* I guess there are two ways of looking at this: 1) These kids today and their Twitter pranks; 2) People will believe just about anything.

A friend of mine who was an avid cyclist and used his bike for most commutes was killed by a vehicle that struck him while he was “operating” his bicycle in full accordance with the law. He’s dead now and the person who killed him didn’t face any criminal charges because it was just considered a traffic accident. In the eyes of the law it was just a little whoopsies.
Fake tweet or not, the manner in which motorists treat bicycle lanes is a legitimate public policy problem that needs to be addressed. Even the people that don’t want to address it know it is a policy problem that exists, and that’s probably why this tweet is a believable fake tweet.
Olney’s white squirrel population has better legal protections than cyclists.

If it’s this easy for a prankster to get folks all riled up imagine the damage sophisticated, coordinated campaigns can inflict. It’s truly scary.

How many lobbyists are weeping right now at the prospect of tracking 17,000 different House bills?

What a striking coincidence that the bill had the same number in two states.

“What a striking coincidence that the bill had the same number in two states.” That just a testament to how well coordinated the lobbyist groups are? /s
