DeSantis sides with Mary Miller, against Pritzker on new Illinois law

To the Left, citizenship is meaningless. Illinois is now letting illegal aliens become police officers.

In Florida, we took action to combat the harms of Biden’s border crisis. We also value our citizen officers who serve and protect our communities.

As President, I will restore American sovereignty.

No illegal alien should have authority over any American citizen. It is a sad commentary on the state of America that this is even a debate.

* Clapback…

This man isn't smart enough to be president.

I proudly signed the bill allowing legal permanent residents & DACA recipients in IL to serve their communities as police officers. Our military already does it & it's the right thing to do—no matter what lies the right-wing spreads. https://t.co/BjXHYKMk6D

— JB Pritzker (@JBPritzker) August 1, 2023

* The Hill

Pritzker has been defending the new Illinois law after many have falsely characterized it as a law allowing immigrants who had entered the country illegally apply for law enforcement positions. In fact, the new law states that “individuals who are not citizens, but are legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law” can apply for police jobs at the beginning of 2024.

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) and Rep. Mary Miller (R-Ill.) are among the conservative lawmakers criticizing the new law.

Pritzker has argued that similar legislation exists in other states and that many DACA recipients and legal residents already serve in the U.S. military.

* The new law states this

The sheriff of any county or the corporate authorities of any municipality may authorize, empower, employ, or permit a person to act as deputy sheriff or special policeman for the purpose of preserving the peace, who is not a citizen of the United States, who is legally authorized under federal law to work in the United States and is authorized under federal law to obtain, carry, or purchase or otherwise possess a firearm, or who is an individual against whom immigration action has been deferred by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services under the federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) process and is authorized under federal law to obtain, carry, or purchase or otherwise possess a firearm.

  1. Florida is currently seeing outbreaks of both malaria and leprosy, and DeSantis just vetoed $14.5 million in health care spending. Plenty enough there to keep De Santis busy.

  2. “This man isn’t smart enough to be president.”

    Check-mate.

Well done Governor. Keep fighting the disinformation machine.

  3. === It is a sad commentary on the state of America that this is even a debate.===

Somehow I find agreement with this statement. Everything before it is what one should expect from a twitter account that posted literal Nazi propaganda very recently.

It is an alright clap back, but I worry that this kind of thing is feeding the trolls.

  4. The lack of facts from a man who has invited VP Harris back to FL to find out the “facts” regarding Florida’s new lesson plan to teach enslaved persons benefited from slavery by learning new trades. Hypocrisy has no limits.

Comment by illinifan Tuesday, Aug 1, 23 @ 2:09 pm

  5. According to second city cop blog which I know is disliked by many and really really dislikes the Governor in earlier times citizenship was not a requirement to become a Chicago police officer and several comments posted said they were non citizens when hired and became citizens later. I don’t know what the big deal is.

Comment by DuPage Saint Tuesday, Aug 1, 23 @ 2:10 pm

  6. Between Bost’s lawsuit that sought to disenfranchise those serving in the military and DeSantis and Miller indirectly criticizing our noncitizen military members this shows how patriotic Republicans really are (despite their ubiquitous flag lapel pins).

  7. Spme people have to have someone else to hate…it takes the heat off of themselves.

  8. Ron DESantis is the number one Malevolence-signaler in the nation. I’ve been looking for an antonym to virtue signaling and this seems to work. And in the world of malevolence-signaling, facts are irrelevant. You just need to signal just how tough you are on _____. In this case the blank is “illegal immigrants” even though that is completely irrelevant to the law in question.

  9. Yeah, in Florida you can be a sworn officer with only a GED. Let’s talk about standards, Rob.

A lesson plan put out by a group of idiots who got their examples so wrong it was ludicrous.

  14. “Let’s talk about standards, Rob.”

I see what you did there, lol.

Rob probably knows it’s not illegal aliens, but those are trigger words to the base. The GOP is full-on pandering to bigotry and culture wars, the essence of its base.

  15. DeSantis is just a modern re-iteration of the standard hate monger…no less…and no more.

    Comment by Dotnonymous x Tuesday, Aug 1, 23 @ 2:43 pm

  16. First, the governor is a good man.

He’s a good man because good men (and women, equally not as an aside or addition) stand and are counted when it matters against the worst elements tearing down what is good.

    Thank you, sir.

    To the overall?

It shouldn’t go without saying that the Illinois National GOP Committeeman is a DeSantis supporter, also another in ILGOP leadership flat out refusing to denounce Mary Miller (no relation to Rich *or* Isabel) and the three, Porter, DeSantis, and Miller are in step.

It’s why I don’t identify as this GOP, locally or nationally.

I feel the need especially and specifically here to write that again, and to, I guess, to make clearer those words.

Policy and politics, mores and values, respect… bipartisanship hinges on knowing where two disagree, the idea that any *and* all those differences are still a truth that all want what’s best for this state and country, the GOP has proven in policy and governing that they have no taste or thirst to make things better, but to regress it all to make the ugly past our future “again”

I don’t identify with such people.

There are two sides today, not what partisans hope is the divide but what those like a Ben Franklin feared… two side to keeping our Republic, with this GOP more than willing to see it fade.

Thank you governor for standing on the side of right.

  17. ===I only have a G.E.D. …coppers don’t need to be geniuses…just good in the heart will do.

First, I’m sorry if that was insulting. That’s great that you do have a GED. In general I do think at least a 2 year degree is a good idea for someone enforcing the law and while it’s no guarantee, I believe it does increase professionalism.

Comment by ArchPundit Tuesday, Aug 1, 23 @ 2:45 pm

  18. Sigh–not a well written apology there. I’m sorry. I’ll just stop there.

  19. If you are the prosecution: do you want to go into to court with defense attorneys asking police officers on the stand: “are you a U.S. citizen”? Could be a 14th Amendment problem here ..

  22. After Governor Pritzker made mincemeat out of Darren Bailey during the debate, DeSantis should be worried about throwing shade.

Perhaps DeSantis fell off his skis one too many times and spouts delusional statements for attention.

  23. @ArchPundit…GED graduates may be a little touchy about their perceived lack of formal education…including me.

Educated cops is a good thing…for sure…no apology needed.

  24. ====Could be a 14th Amendment problem here ..===

The idea that another amendment needed to enshrine women’s suffrage *after*, the 14th Amendment argument is lazy to the idea, and frankly nothing gets my attention more when discussing non-citizens fighting for our constitution, as uniformed wearing military, because they believe in what we *should* be, and fighting for that ideal, as imperfect as it is

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Aug 1, 23 @ 3:04 pm

  25. Maybe I’m missing something here. Aren’t rules the same as we’ve been using for non US citizens to become a Doctor? The Governor of Florida better check the credentials of his wife’s cancer Doctors.

    Comment by Club J Tuesday, Aug 1, 23 @ 3:06 pm

  26. ==GED graduates may be a little touchy about their perceived lack of formal education…including me.

I work with Adult Basic Ed quite a bit so I felt bad about how I put it for this exact reason. I don’t want to belittle someone’s achievement.

  27. = If you are the prosecution: do you want to go into to court with defense attorneys asking police officers on the stand: “are you a U.S. citizen”? =

    “Objection - irrelevant”
    “Sustained - move on, counsel”

Seriously, as a criminal defense lawyer for (mumblety-mumble) years, I had way better cross-examination fodder on police officers than that.

  28. Chicago Tribune ed board four days ago:

“And he found himself on the wrong side of an argument over Florida’s teaching of the history of slavery, of all things. The most egregious elements of that curriculum may have been cherry-picked by Democrats for political advantage on social media, but DeSantis should have predicted and had an answer for that.”

Those rascal Dems, cherry picking a history curriculum that’s otherwise a model for the nation, according to the Trib.

The editorial manages to list all kinds of other things wrong with DeSantis, but holds out hope he’ll hear the same coded message that they do from Ken Griffin about how he should campaign to beat Trump.

Why does this message need to be in code? Only the three men (and one male freelancer) that comprise the Trib ed board these days know for sure.

A reflection of how pathetic the non-Trump GOP field is they are trying to rehabilitate a pathetic liar like DeSantis.

Also, the Trib should just give up on editorials, they don’t have the bandwidth to even make sense.

  29. Excellent clapback, and completely needed. This is not a troll, this is a leading candidate for President of the United States. Taking the high road by ignoring disinformation doesn’t work with these people. They don’t have a bottom.

  30. As a former GED instructor, I found that the students were dedicated, came to class on time, and put effort into their desire to reach their goal. There were a few who wore ankle bracelets as they were ordered by the court to obtain a GED or return to jail. No problems occurred as reports of satisfactory progress were required by the judge.

Using direct instruction, we reviewed math, reading/vocabulary, and composition/essays for the writing sample. We used practice tests to determine if the student was ready to pass the GED. I explained to the students that I wanted all of them to pass on the first attempt.

We held a graduation celebration with cake and punch. Met many families at the ceremony. Their hard work and effort was rewarded and the grads were so proud of reaching this milestone.

    Comment by Rudy’s teeth Tuesday, Aug 1, 23 @ 4:33 pm

  31. DeSantis never heard of legal immigrants?
11 states allow green card holders to be police officers and maybe soon Texas will join them.
He wants to run for president but he also wants to insult those 11 or twelve states and the people in them? Does he think he doesn’t need them ? Pritzker’s right, he isn’t very smart.

  32. @Steve Rogers +1.

    Good on our Governor.

  33. So, my Great-grandfather, who got off the boat from Ireland and became the Chicago Police for 40 years, shouldn’t have been able to do that. What a pack of eegits.

  34. “this is a leading candidate for President of the United States” Well, if 3rd place 40 points behind the pace is “leading”, then I guess.

  35. Way to go JB. Too bad more leaders don’t step into the fray and shut down this nonsense.
