Food for thought

* Far too much of our public discourse is at the cartoon level…

All that’s to say nobody can talk about crime in Chicago in any serious way, it’s either through the lens of crime apocalypse panic or total dismissiveness and both completely miss the mark. Just roll your eyes a little at both and live your life

…And the people who love it the hardest are often the same ones working the hardest to make it a safer, more equal, more loving place for everyone. That's what gets lost in the quick and easy narratives.

…Adding… I just realized that the national Republican Legislative Campaign Committee is meeting in Chicago this week. So, if the city is truly the cartoonish hellscape the GOP regularly claims, why the heck are they there? It’s all just rhetoric.

  1. The video is pretty funny.

Don’t know who Heidi Stevens is but she is right. I have never been afraid to go anywhere in Chicago. Anywhere.

  2. I loved this as it is soooooo true. I have always found it extremely amusing that the most politically macho crowd are the ones who are afraid to leave their homes without a small nuclear weapon or at least a concealed handgun. And heaven forfend they actually travel to downtown Chicago. Meanwhile, those of us who actually work in downtown Chicago somehow have done so unarmed for decades.

And no, I’m not ignoring the massive wave of armed robberies currently sweeping the North and Northwest parts of Chicago. Weirdly, the media doesn’t seem concerns by the 200% spike in armed robberies. I’m still not going to start carrying a gun but it is a growing problem the current administration seems hell bent on ignoring.

  3. It’s hilarious. What’s funnier is that some folks think it’s serious.

  4. The idea that one must vilify at an extreme to make a point is the simpleton politics of hate.

Crime, immigration, race, “culture”, the divisive nature of your in-law uncle who eats up every extreme “truth” as the actual is what makes conversing with folks that also embrace “alternative facts”… all but impossible.

I can’t be a bigger fan of Heidi Stevens than I already am. Her takes and her thoughts make me think, and often it’s a deeper thinking than I had to things.

Irony is the tastiest of all comedy when extremists want the worst to be the “accepted norm”, even dismissing any talk of outliers.

I saw this, it made me chuckle. Glad it got a post here.

  5. =It’s all just rhetoric.=

Amen. People used to know that too.

  6. Snarky, arrogant, and woefully out of touch with the issue. Fits right in with the Chicago political class.

Republican Legislative Campaign Committee is meeting in Chicago this week.

Is that owning the She-Caw-Go political elite or is there more to it.

    Heidi gets this right.

===It’s not that people who love and brag on Chicago don’t know about the bad stuff—the violence, the disparities, the segregation, the disinvestment. We have access to all the same headlines you do. It’s that we know Chicago is, like humanity, more than just its imperfections…

…And the people who love it the hardest are often the same ones working the hardest to make it a safer, more equal, more loving place for everyone. That’s what gets lost in the quick and easy narratives.===

I find the video so tasty because the irony of what is dismissed as “almost impossible in She-CawGo” is readily seen. The challenges are just that and meeting those is far different than embracing those challenges as the end all be all norm.

    With respect.

  8. “Nobody visits Chicago anymore. It’s too crowded.”

    Yogi Berra. Maybe.

  9. If only the National Republican Campaign Committee would visit the jazz clubs in Chicago, they would be entertained by some of the finest musicians anywhere. On stage the players are Black, White, Hispanic, Asian …male and female.

The audience knows not to talk during the performance as that would be disrespectful to the musicians. The clubs are called listening rooms for a reason.

We are fortunate in Chicago to have access to these talented musicians month after month year after year.

Yes, there are pockets in the city where crime is an issue yet there are places like Symphony Center, the Lyric Opera, and jazz clubs where people gather together to enjoy talented musicians in a respectful environment.

  10. Loved the video and adore Heidi Stevens. Her syndicated column, Balancing Act, is fabulous. Kudos to the brave Texan scouting the streets of Chicago, to Heidi and all of the brave souls who live, work and recreate in Chicago. I love Chicago, warts and all.
