First the graduated Illinois income tax and now the Chicago transfer tax. The super rich in Chicago had another good night.

I cannot believe the very low turnout out yesterday in Chicago and Cook County. Compared to 2020, there were about 400K less votes in the State’s Attorney race. Everyone I know complained about crime and Kim Foxx, then don’t vote. UGH!!

Cook County and Chicago officially join the backlash against the far left that we’ve seen in other counties/cities. For those of us who did not want four years of Kim Foxx 2.0 (I am assuming Eileen will pull this off) and opposed BCH, it was a *great* night. Are progressives listening to the message that was sent?

Is that pretty much it for election season in Illinois? Biden/Trump doesn’t matter here. Are there any other competitive races to keep an eye on in November?

A quick review of BOE info shows the 19th and 47th were the only two wards with more than 30% turnout. And turnout appeared especially bleak in the south side wards.

I know someone selling their place in Chicago and buying a place in the burbs for over a million dollars; they have the same job role I do, and they (and their spouse) work full-time. I would say she doesn’t consider themselves “super-rich.” I did point out they could buy three houses in my neighborhood and dig tunnels to connect them for that kind of money.
One thing I have observed in my life is that plenty of folks who ‘do well’ don’t consider themselves to be doing as well as it would seem they are.

Folks are pretty unhappy with Johnson (and others), and there’s been loads of talks about the mayor maybe, sorta, kinda being open to city funds to the Bears and Sox. Kind of hard to understate how many Chicagoans probably just don’t trust the powers that be with any kind of revised tax powers with all of that in mind.

Location, location, location. A million bucks in North Shore would buy you a shed on a decent lawn. A million bucks in Harvey would buy you a few city blocks.

When I was in HS we would drive in Harvey and Phoenix for on-the-road for Drivers Ed. We were in Phoenix, and our teacher pointed out three lots and a house one of the guidance counselors owned.
One of the other kids in the car said “Wow he must be rich”

My vote against BCH was pretty much a protest vote against the Mayor. If he was for something or someone, I voted against it. The continued employment of Dorval Carter is my biggest gripe with him. Does Johnson know any regular people who ride the CTA? It is such a mess. I’ve been to NYC and their rapid transit has somehow been able to improve post-pandemic and I’m well aware of recent issues on the system. So there is now an increased law enforcement presence. I’m done with my rant against the Mayor but he is the reason I voted against BCH. I’m fine with increasing some taxes to help the homeless just not with this guy in office.

One thought about the failure of BCH (and even the graduated income tax). I believe there is a credibility issue when they say something is “going to lower taxes for you and raise them for someone else.” I suspect people don’t belive that is going to actually happen, so it creates doubt about the whole thing. There may be better luck in just saying, “It will raise someone else’s taxes.”

Not sure what to make of Chicaggo presidential undervote in Dem primary compared to prosecutors vote total. Is it Gaza write-ins? GOPers who crossed over and voted for Burke but won’t vote for a Dem prez?

University of Illinois Athletics has put out a statement that our beloved Mike Bass, a Capitol figure for 15 years passed away on March 17. He was one of the good guys. RIP Mike.

presidential undervote in Dem primary. probably Rs who took a D ballot to vote for EOB I typically leave certain races blank because I would favor no one so I’m sure the Rs do that too.

The McLean County GOP establishment appears to have had a rough night.
The current county GOP chair lost in a county board primary race to an opponent who didn’t do any local news interviews.
The former county GOP chair lost badly to Regan Deering in their state rep. contest.
Longtime GOP incumbent and part of county GOP leadership George Wendt (not Norm from Cheers) lost to Brian Loeffler, brother of former U.S. Sen. Kelly Loeffler of Georgia.

Just read the Sun Times piece on the State’s Attorney’s race. Harris with Pastor Dates at his E night party, the pastor with anti choice ties and preaching. how this affiliation was not troubling to the Jan Schakowsky crowd is puzzling.

I think watching the 17th will be interesting. The GOP is clearly pouring money into it on a bet that it can be flipped from blue to red. It was a competitive election when the incumbent Dem won in 2022, so will be interesting to see how it plays out in November.

I agree, I remember decades ago reading polling summaries about low income folks voting against raising taxes on the wealthy. Focus groups and further digging showed that poor folks wanted to be rich someday and so they didn’t want to raise their future taxes.

I don’t think progressives will conclude that they are wrong to fight for criminal justice reform or homelessness funding.
They do need to strategize differently, of course. There are some wards where they are a force to be reckoned with (outspent 4:1 in the 20th Senate District and won i.e.)
Both the State’s Attorney and BCH were pretty close in an incredibly low turnout election, so progressives might think they simply need to improve turnout. Many have not forgotten the Johnson victory for instance.
With a different mayor I think BCH wins just like how with a different speaker fair tax may have had a better chance.
If Harris loses with dismal south side black turnout it’s not just progressives that need to reflect on strategy, but the entire County party, especially Preckwinkle.

Especially when you have to consider all of the other additional taxes, fees and items that are associated with it. Or the work that someone may have had to do for 15+ years to save for that home. Indeed imagine thinking that.
