  2. Asahi - amazing how well Japanese beer goes with Japanese food.

Comment by Pat Collins Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 11:14 am

  3. Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer. Chosen as the best beer in America at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The beer won the Great American Beer contest of 2006 as the best lager. Nuff said.

Comment by Honest Abe Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 11:15 am

  4. Fat Tire
    &
Dirty Bastard ale from Founders (Kalamazoo, Michigan)

  5. Schlafly No. 15.

  6. Nothing like an ice cold bottle of Stag.

Comment by Mr. Ethics Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 11:18 am

  7. Actually, I am a Bud Light girl, but I do love some Stag occasionally.

Comment by My Opinion Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 11:18 am

  8. Or, Tecate. . . mmm with lime. Is 11:30 to early for a drink?

Comment by My Opinion Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 11:19 am

  9. Sam Adams — the breakfast of champions!

Comment by jaundiced eye Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 11:20 am

  10. micro-brewed Northern Light

Comment by Downstate Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 11:22 am

  11. Tecate!

Comment by Take It Easy Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 11:23 am

  12. Just like music and books, it depends on my mood. On a hot day after I mow the lawn, an O’Dell’s Easy Street Wheat (unfiltered hefeweizen microbrew from Ft. Collins, CO) or a New Belgium Fat Tire (also a microbrew from Ft. Collins, but an amber ale). If I’m not hot, and just want something relaxed, it’s got to be a pint of Guinness.

Comment by schroedk Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 11:23 am

  13. Tecate, but “chelada” style. Add ice, lime juice, salt, a dash of hot sauce and a dash of soy sauce. Tastes a lot better than it sounds and much more refreshing on a hot summer day.

Comment by HV in HP Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 11:23 am

  14. Stella Artois

Comment by trafficmatt Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 11:28 am

  15. Chimay Trappist Ale, though I also like the Fat Tire, and a Dos Equis is nice, or if I’m really wanting a rich, dark beer, an Optimator (or even Leinie’s Big Butt) doppelbock is pure heaven.

    Comment by cermak_rd Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 11:29 am

  16. Smithwicks (pronounced Smit-icks)is a great Irish beer.

Comment by Irish Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 11:29 am

  17. i can not believe someone posted PBR before me :-) The local watering hole by my house JUST got PBR on tap.

Comment by Anonymous Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 11:29 am

  18. New Belgian also makes 1550, a “go-to” in my estimation. Also, Indian Pale Ales are very nice on a hot and humid summer day.

Comment by Commonsense in Illinois Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 11:30 am

  19. Sorry…New Belgium

Comment by Commonsense in Illinois Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 11:30 am

Comment by Siyotanka Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 11:34 am

  22. When I’m feeling prosperous: Guinness stout
When I’m feeling impoverished: Miller High Life

As you can imagine, I drink much more of “The Champagne of Beers”.

    Comment by Douglas M. Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 11:39 am

  26. My personal favorite is a combination of two great Irish beers. The Black and Tan- half Guinness, half Harp.

Comment by Kevin Fanning Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 11:40 am

  27. Free and cold.

Comment by BandCamp Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 11:41 am

  28. PBR in my younger days, Falstaff in my youngest days, Miller Lite for the last many years, but sometimes Old Style when I’m in Chicago.

Comment by steve schnorf Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 11:41 am

  29. SCAm when impovershied nothing beats Old Milwaukees best. I think the cans cost more then the beer itself.

Comment by Ghost Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 11:41 am

  30. Bell’s Amber. Thank you so very much Union Liquor for making it impossible to get in Illinois. In summer, I switch to their Oberon, also not available in Illinois. Despite the, imho, puerile humor of the label, Flying Dog Pale Ale.

Comment by Rod sez I'm pork Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 11:42 am

  31. I’m a seasonal kinda guy. Corona or Leinie’s Honey Weiss is great in summer. Buffalo Bill’s Pumpkin Ale in fall. Goose Island’s Russian Imperial Stout is the perfect winter beer. Two Brothers Domain DuPage French Country Ale for spring.

Comment by Bluefish Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 11:42 am

  32. Bill,
When I go to my company cubs outing every year I have an Old Pile, just seems to be the right beer for that location

Comment by OneManBlog Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 11:43 am

  33. You are right HV! Chelada style is the only way to go with Tecate!

Comment by My Opinion Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 11:44 am

  34. Miller High-Life

Comment by RightGirl Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 11:46 am

  35. This is probably the first time I’ve ever agreed with Bill about anything, but its Old Style for me as well.

Now if Cassandra responds by saying Old Style too . . . .

Comment by Just the Facts Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 11:48 am

  36. Lol@Falstaff. I drank a lot of Drewry’s Draft and Blatz during that era. You could get 12 Drewry’s little Joes for $1.99.

Comment by Bill Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 11:49 am

  37. I don’t normally drink beer but at least I can get thru some Coor’s easily than I could Bud Light or even Budweiser. In which case I’d rather go the route of homebrewing.

Comment by Levois Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 11:51 am

  38. Monty Python’s Holy (gr)Ale or Rigwelter (the original “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up” beer).

Comment by Beerman Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 12:07 pm

You can get Yuengling in Illinois? Used to be my drink of choice in salad days in Philadelphia.

Comment by Rod sez I'm pork Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 12:10 pm

  54. Wisconsin flows not only with Cheese and bratwurst, but some of the best micro-brews I’ve encountered. A newer brewery just west of Madison is Furthermore. If you ever find yourself north of the border pick-up a six pack at just about any local gas station. Fave brew: Furthermore, Knot Stock.

Comment by Wisc Micro Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 12:10 pm

  55. Where’s all the people I know that don’t need the fancy beer?!? I’m a Bud Select kinda gal.

  56. My favorite in this order are:
    Beck’s
    Negro Modelo
    Goose Island
    Bud Light

I think Heineken and Miller are awful. Don’t like Coors either. Otherwise I will drink nearly anything.

  59. Blue Moon with orange

Comment by zatoichi Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 12:41 pm

  60. During the college days it was either Rhinelander or Schaefer Light….about $3 a 12 pack back in the late ’80s. We missed out on the microbrew craze…we just wanted to get hammered!
Now, when I do head to Moe’s for a few it’s usually bud light or, most recently, bud select. (Being a Waukegan native I have to blend in down by STL.)

Sorry A-B supporter….it looks like the company will be bought. That will be Bad for the area.

  71. Sam Adams original Boston Lager

Comment by Muskrat Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 1:28 pm

  72. The best beer I ever tasted was on a very hot summer day while baling hay - it was an ice cold Blatz of all things. Hell, any beer would have tasted good that day, but the taste was memorable. Do they even make it anymore?

These days I switch hit from Guinness to Goose Island to Sam Adams to Amstel Light with an occasional foray south of the border for a Corona with lime.

Comment by anon sequitor Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 1:33 pm

  73. Wow, too hard to break this one down. Hard to go wrong with anything by New Glarus, Bell’s, Summit, Three Floyds, Flying Dog, James Page, New Belgium or even Goose Island.

But really it’s all about context. At a Mexican joint, give me a Negra Modelo in cold weather; a Sol if it’s hot. And at Wrigley, of course, Old Style’s the only way to go.

Comment by Reality Check Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 1:34 pm

  74. Bell’s Oberon from Kalamazoo MI
Pilsner Urquell for a lighter taste
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale for a heavier but refreshing taste…

    Is it 5:00 pm yet?

    Comment by Anonymous45 Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 1:36 pm

  75. Depends on the weather. Colder weather (or drinking inside) I go with Guinness. For hot weather, I prefer Red Stripe.

Comment by Skeeter Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 1:39 pm

  76. No longer drink alcohol, but when I did - in my college days - I was a plain ol’ Guinness stout guy.

Comment by BandCamp Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 1:43 pm

  78. Wow, and here I figured the most popular brand would be “Free”! I think that speaks volumes for this group.

Moslon Golden gets high marks from me as does some Pakistani beer with “lion” in the name I bought a couple months ago.

Comment by What planet is he from again? Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 1:48 pm

  79. Schlitz…both the current version and the reintroduced ‘original version’ are tasty

Comment by JGatz Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 1:51 pm

  80. I’d really like an ice-cold Killian’s right now. I’ll never understand why people in Chicago think Old Style is good beer.

Comment by Deep South Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 1:51 pm

  81. Old Style regularly. When I’m splurging LaBatt’s Blue.

  83. Right now I have within my refrigerator chilled Longhammer IPA, Guinness, Imperial, Miller High Life, Gennessee, and a three year old Bud Light someone accidentially brought to the house and no one is willing to drink.

My favorite though is Jever. My university beer from Jever Deutschland. Like an IPA, but made with Frieslandische herbs.

And anything fresh from a microbrewery is heavenly.

Comment by VanillaMan Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 2:10 pm

  84. Sam Adams is my beer of choice, but occasionally, I get a hankering for a Dos Equis

    Comment by K to the 3 Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 2:13 pm

Comment by corvax Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 2:14 pm

  86. So many choices…

Gotta love the Belgium Ales like Kwak and Saxo.

Bell’s Oberon is great this time of year.

Guinness is brilliant when the temperature’s cool off.

But, my heart will always belong to Stag.

Comment by Ryan Hermes Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 2:17 pm

  87. Is this a joke? The only correct answer for the state of Illinois is Stag.

    Duh.

Comment by Macbeth Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 2:17 pm

  88. Smithwicks, Guinness, Harp, Schlafly, Bud Light, and finally…

    “I love you, man”
    “Oh, you’re not so bad”

  91. TURBO DOG…..

Comment by Spanky Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 2:31 pm

  92. Snowflake. A Chinese beer. Drunk first at dinner brought by a economic development delegation from Beijing and second at a restaurant in Steamboat. Never found any place else. I’m pretty sure its unavailability has made its taste legendary in my mind.

  107. Anything in a bottle or can as long as I’m enjoying it with friends! I do tend to lean a bit toward Tsingtao. It was brewed by the Germans in China prior to WW1 and is China’s largest beer export. Tastes similar to Heineken.

Comment by Hack Slacker Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 7:05 pm

  114. Bell’s Oberon. As previously mentioned, Bell’s is now unavailable in Illinois due to our bizarre distributor law. I’m driving to St. Louis tomorrow to pick up six cases to last me the rest of the summer.

Comment by IDOT Engineer Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 7:06 pm

  115. Lots of good ones out there. New Belgium’s Blue Paddle, Guinness in the tall cans, August Schell’s Pilsner, Anchor Steam, Becks, Amstel Light, Newcastle to name a few. Most of the Goose Island products are pretty good, and their root beer is outstanding.

Comment by Nowhere Man Friday, Jun 27, 08 @ 7:29 pm

  116. Bass is the only way to go. I still don’t understand people drinking beer out of a clear bottle or with fruit or any “beer” that needs to be imbibed at 32.5 degrees or less to taste OK. Like any light beer.

    During Internship: Old Milwaukee
    These Days: MGD

Comment by WWDMD Saturday, Jun 28, 08 @ 7:30 am

  119. Honest Abe suggested Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer. I would humbly suggest to Old Abe that only Will County Democrats drink PBR and they do so out in their tool sheds when no one else is looking. Honest Abe’s neighbors have always referred to PBR as “skunk beer” back when they used to drink it with their buddies in the 1960s.
Now, if Honest Abe was a good Irishman (which he is despite being a Democrat)and wasn’t so cheap, he would be drinking a decent Irish beer such as “Smithwick’s” with his neighbors.

Comment by Quiet Meditation Saturday, Jun 28, 08 @ 12:14 pm

  120. I love Miller Lite, Miller High Life, MGD.

But my favorite Beer is Guinness. It’s Heaven in a glass.
