  1. Starting to notice less of the cicadas on the trees and plants in the yard but those that are left sure know how to raise heck.

  2. Jonesing for the three-day weekend pretty hardcore.

Also, I’m convinced that people talking about cicadas are just all in on a practical joke at this point. Haven’t seen or heard diddly squat in McLean County.

  3. The Cicadas were making noise in Springfield Wednesday afternoon.

  4. TJ, I needed that post this morning. LOL

  5. Gov. Pritzker said he was disappointed by Madison County putting a non-binding referendum on the ballot this fall seeking a pathway toward breaking away from Chicago and northern Illinois.

I’m embarrassed the Madison County Board has subjected us to the ridicule of the rest of the state.

Consider yourself lucky. My patio and driveway in DuPage look like a Jackson Pollock painting.

  7. –people talking about cicadas–

They are going to most plentiful in older areas of towns. It can be very localized even within the same town.

Anywhere built after say 1990 probably wont have many at all.

The 1990 emergence laid the eggs for the 2007 emergence. The 2007 emergence laid the eggs for the current emergence.

If you have a house built after 1990, all that soil the eggs a nd nymphs live in was probably tilled under/scraped off during construction, leaving few if any to emerge for the next cycle. Not to mention it takes awhile for their preferred host trees to become large enough to support a huge population, something else which is absent in new construction.

  10. The Sox were robbed blind last night, absolutely unbelievable way to end that ballgame. I guess the south side only gets 26 outs per game now?

  11. Excited for Cubs/Cards series starting tonight.

    Comment by MG85 Friday, May 24, 24 @ 9:46 am

  12. Awaiting Cards/Cubs clash. If all goes well Cards will be above 500 when the sun sets Sunday. The Lou will come thru.

  13. Awesome segment on John Oliver last night about the negative impacts of growing Corn. It had a little blurb about how farmers actively doing tilling in the fields during very windy conditions was what caused a ‘dust storm’, and how that was the direct cause of the wrecks on I-55 last year.

  14. TJ come on down to Tazewell County. I have more than enough cicadas for you. My yard is crunchy from them.

  15. Cubs fan here. The Sox got absolutely hosed last night.

Comment by DS Friday, May 24, 24 @ 10:30 am

  16. TJ, consider yourself lucky. Here, the cicadas sound like a constant siren in the background, while the ones closer to me chime in at a volume so loud I can’t hear myself think. On hot days, they start in about 4am and go until almost 11 pm. It’s about to drive me insane.

  17. I guess one of the blessings of loss of hearing with age is the muted cicadas.

Comment by no relation Friday, May 24, 24 @ 11:39 am

  18. @no relation, Muted Cicadas sounds like some color that some company would offer

Comment by Amalia Friday, May 24, 24 @ 12:12 pm

  19. @no relation/Amalia

I saw the Muted Cicadas perform at Lollapalooza back in the day… kind of a prog rock/jazz fusion act. /s

  20. @Amalia, and I was thinking Muted Cicadas was a cool name for a folk band

Comment by Lurker Friday, May 24, 24 @ 2:40 pm

  21. @Lurker, maybe they can play at the next Boat Drink Caucus event.
