  2. Volunteers planted 25 oak trees in a preserve. They are all thriving. We watered them this morning and removed the netting. No cicadas here but we were ready.

  3. Sounds like the cicada show is finally coming to an end here.

Another four weeks or so until the regular yearly ones come out - in much smaller numbers.

  4. The A/C was working on the BNSF this morning. A rare treat these days on the Metra.

  5. Seeing lots of leaves and small clumps of leaves on the ground. Pretty unusual for this time of year. Wondering if it is from the cicada invasion?

  6. Was just thinking about the economy in Lincoln and what they might do instead of depending on the correctional center. I can tell you from experience there is a shortage of facilities like group homes for elderly people, particularly those with mental disabilities. And there’s a lack of all kinds of retirement facilities particularly for people on Medicaid and Medicare. That is a labor intensive business that requires both skilled and non skilled labor, it’s steady, federal money behind it. The old college campus buildings could be converted, and some new construction could be added for eight- person group home housing. It is a business with a never-ending turnover. I would be in favor of some state assistance in development of those facilities.

  7. The SOS appointment system sure didn’t work for me. I made an appointment and I have it on my phone, but the staff can’t find it so I have to enter the long line. A staff member told me this location has multiple appointment options and this happens all the time.

They can shrink to a size where the town can eventually sustain itself according to their rural values.

  9. @Chicago Voter, might be cicada chewing and coming down with the wind. but also plants are under great stress now with the heat, even well established ones. folks are reporting changes in gardens that don’t come until later in summer.

  10. Re cicadas chewing - they can’t chew, they don’t have mandibles. They suck juice. The females’ ovipositors do scratch grooves into tree branches to deposit eggs. But that probably isn’t bringing down leaves. I’d go with high winds.
