I learned an interesting thing when I was leaving my work on the south side of Kankakee last night. I was surprised to see a jetliner flying fairly low so I pulled up FlightAware to see what flight it was.
I figured out that it was a Southwest Boeing 737 at 6000 feet going from Houston to Midway and there was also a smaller jet coming from Minneapolis. 6000 feet isn’t particularly low but it is unusual to see that large of a plan that low when not near a major airport. With the storms at Midway the flights were in a holding pattern circling the area.
The holding pattern goes from the south side of Kankakee (near KIKK airport) south about 15 miles to route 52. I’ve lived in Kankakee a long time but never noticed this holding pattern before.

aaron b. My kids were flying home from LAX last night just before the storm hit the chicago area and they diverted them to Indianapolis for 2 hours but flew from Chicago to Indy at 2000 ft. Crazy stuff.

It’s all over for the Cubs.

Last night’s storm was kind of fun to watch roll in from our new apartment. Good to be back in Chicago again after 5 and a half years away. Turned on the Cubs game and it was pouring at Wrigley. Hadn’t even started raining yet down in South Loop.
Speaking of the Cubes. I should have gone to bed early instead of watching that whole game. They can’t hit worth a lick. Starting pitching has gotten into a decent groove, bullpen has settled down recently, defense still solid. But they just can’t hit at all. Last night they fouled off meatball after meatball after meatball. The occasional 2 out single surprisingly didn’t translate into runs!

Just loving the daily reminder that the 17-year cicadas are gone until 2041.

So I was nonchalantly grilling on my patio last night. Suddenly Tom Skilling on my phone started talking to me about lightning in my area and I looked around and realized it had gotten dark and a cool wind was blowing. I gathered up the food and took it inside to finish.

don’t know if anyone else was surprised about the storm yesterday but we sure were. some of the loudest thunder I’ve ever heard and a welcome rain even if downpour. with the tornado patterns from that terrifying night confirmed it seems there is no safe space. thought provoking. prepare.

Great weather this week in beautiful DuPage County. Took the grandkids to the zoo Monday and had a great time. Getting up early to walk for exercise. Life is good.

South Side of Kankakee also has the historic Koerner Airport . Founded in the 1920s . Believe that the
late Delbert Koerner has a license signed by one of the Wright Brothers. No Jetliners at 6,000 back then.
