John Deere called staff for a 7:30 am meeting in Moline yesterday and reportedly announced 1,600 layoffs which is a gut punch to the Quad Cities.

  5. I think part of the hostility I receive on this site is based on my handle name. I think I am going to retire it, but I need to think of a newer and more clever name. Any suggestions?

How about an anagram? You’ve got “Internal Bleach,” “Liberal Enchant,” “A Belch Internal,” “Taller Beach Inn,” and many more.

  12. Sen. Dick Dirbin (D-Illinois) might agree with L.P. Hartley’s famous dictum that “the past is a foreign country.” The senator recently announced that he would not have invited and would not attend (along with Vice President Harris) Israel Prime Minister Netanyahu’s speech to a joint session of Congress, citing the prime minister’s unwillingness “to embrace a two-state solution” to the Palestinian-Israeli empass.
In 1982, Durbin was first elected to the House of Representatives from a central Illinois district, narrowly defeating Rep. Paul Findley. Findley, an eleven-term congressman, was a moderate Republican who was an early critic of U. S. involement in Vietnam. A major theme in Durbin’s campaign was Findley’s support for greater engagement with the Arab states and Palestinians. Pro-Israel groups provided campaign contributions that allowed Durbin to equalize Findley’s incumbency advantage. Clearly, the political winds have changed.
