Pritzker doesn’t think city and state currently need as much migrant shelter capacity

Posted in:

* Tribune reporter…

Breaking: The city just confirmed it will be closing three shelters currently housing migrant families, a total of 3,030 beds:
- Halsted, 2241 S. Halsted (closing Oct 1)
- Ogden, 344 N. Ogden (Oct 1)
- Lakeshore Hotel, 4900b S. DuSable Lake Shore Dr. (Oct 24)

Story to come.

* Gov. Pritzker was asked by a reporter whether that means no more migrants were coming or whether the state was going to close its shelters as well

Look, we’ve been prepared for the idea that Texas, that the governor of Texas, is going to, as he has, in a way that I find reprehensible, just load people onto busses and send them to cities. So we’re always prepared for the idea that that could happen. It hasn’t happened. It appears that the number of people crossing the border has been significantly diminished because of the policies of the Harris/Biden administration. And so I feel like, you know, we’ve got to be prepared and have some capacity, but I don’t think quite as much capacity as we had needed before. So hopefully that reduces some expenditures by the city, the county and the state. But importantly, we’ve got to be ready for, you know what is a humanitarian crisis if it comes.

    Abbott knows the weather in Chicago is too nice in the fall. He won’t start shipping people to Chicago until winter sets in. The policy always was to inflict suffering.

  2. actually… Texas has decreased crossings and still has nat guard on the border, those river barriers, etc. We have now fewer people to ship (An election year helps that here). Lots of the current crossings have moved to NM, AZ and Cali. :-)

    I’m not sure Texas really did anything to impact the number of crossings, as crossings have fallen dramatically across-the-board. It’s been pretty well-documented.

  4. @Ron, as someone who has lived in Texas and been a Republican longer than most people have been alive, let me offer the advice that you ship goods, not people. Just a thought.

  5. Does anyone know why the migrant shelters can’t be repurposed into temp shelter for the homeless? No snark, I really don’t get it.

  6. Lurker - The word “shipped” was used intentionally to dehumanize people attempting to claim asylum in the US.

    The “good christians” of texas are ignoring the lessons of the New Testament to care and feed those who are less fortunate and in need.
