Somewhat concerned by the state of Illinois public universities, given the financial news that has been coming out about them as of late!

The weather has been nice (if a little warmish) here in beautiful DuPage County this week. Cooler and wetter for the weekend, apparently. Grass has stopped growing but various weeds have not. October in just over a week? Doesn’t seem possible.

Harvest is going well, with corn testing around 18.5 out of the field. It’s a good start.

Apparently there was some kind of threat affecting Bradley Bourbonnais Community High School this morning that caused a lockdown of the school for about an hour. They say the issue has been resolved and the school reopened for normal business at about 8:30am.

Saw my first Separate Illinois sign up here in far northern Illinois. Made me chuckle.

My neighboring farmers have been going full force all week, and suggest they are getting good yields. Then again, prices are determined by corporations (agribusiness), not farmers, and prices are making them nervous. That reminds me of a news story I read yesterday about chicken farmers in Arkansas (I think), and Tyson’s pulling out on them. The emergence of corporate hegemony i n the agricultural sector is very scary stuff. The get to choose whether or not farmers survive, regardless of the farmers (cf. Farm Aid).
Here’s to a bountiful harvest, and benevolent corporate hegemony in the pricing of that harvest.
