* Tribune management is obviously lacking in the training department. Email exchange…
The initial mistake is probably understandable. Following up with something like, “Ope, my bad,” would be fine. But then to go on and ask a person via a state email account for help reaching a campaign account after being told such correspondence is prohibited is probably not a great idea.
Again, this is obviously a training issue.
But it’s not uncommon, even among people who should know better. I regularly hear gripes from government spokespeople about reporters asking them campaign questions. Heck, I’ve done it occasionally because I just wasn’t thinking. But I backed off when realizing my mistake. Not everyone does that.
Anyway…
* The Question: If you were the state legislator in question, how would you respond to that follow-up email? It’s Friday, so snark is not discouraged.

I would either ignore that follow-up or simply email them from my campaign account (not on state property) (if I was interested in purchasing advertising).

I’d just reply with the Max Max “That’s Bait” meme.

And the Trib Ed Board loves to pontificate about corruption lol.
I would say please reread my prior statement slowly.

Forward it to the Sun-Times and ask them to write a story about the Tribune trying to induce State employees to violate government ethics rules.

related to this post - I have had to reach out to IL legislators related to an association I am affiliated with. One frustration is that many legislators have Gmail or personalized addresses- it would be so much easier if they all used @ilga.gov for all official contacts - let the campaign emails get creative.

I think the reply was proper. After reporting to IT, mark it as spam. No further correspondence is necessary.

Mark as spam? Refer to IT or LIG?
Oh, please this is Illinois. The rules doesn’t apply to the legislators. They should indulge the Trib and answer what ever questions the Trib wants.

“We’re required to maintain a strict separation between our governing activities and our campaign activities — much like your paper’s firewall between editorial connect and advertising content.”

I’d start with the assumption that this person was perhaps very green and not yet clear on the concept (as opposed to an idiot who should know better). And so, I would gently spell out that even me pointing them in the direction of the campaign staff would be seen as improper use of taxpayer funds to assist a candidate, and thus I was unable to help them.

I think the answer posted works pretty well, given the email is a solicitation for advertising. But big fail on the Trib there.

47th Ward, is hilarious, and thechampaignlife is 100% correct- but the Chicago Tribune grifting while fundamentally not understanding how government or political campaigns work- is a huge part of why we have so many problems. They are incapable of reporting and evaluating that which they do not understand.
