* There were some slim pickings in Friday’s awards contest. Senate topics aren’t usually very popular here, but we’ll make do. The 2024 Golden Horseshoe Award for Best Democratic Illinois State Senator goes to Sen. Patrick Joyce…
Senator Patrick Joyce is a likable, hardworking, moderate member of the Senate. His door is always open, and he works well to reach compromises on complex issues that ultimately help his constituents. He is well-liked by staff which tells you something, and colleagues on both sides of the aisle. He also has an approachable demeanor and a smile even on the busiest session days.
* The 2024 Golden Horseshoe Award for Best Republican Illinois State Senator goes to Senate Republican Leader John Curran…
He is an asset to the republican caucus. He is able to command respect from the many factions within this caucus without angering his members. I’m actually not sure why we wants to be a leader as they have very little say.
* Today’s categories…
Best In-House Lobbyist
As always, do your best to nominate in both categories and make sure to explain your nominations or they won’t count.
* Out of the blue, I called someone on Friday who had just donated a significant amount of money to help buy Christmas presents for foster kids. I’ve known the guy for years and told him I was curious, without being in the least judgmental, why he waited almost two weeks to contribute.
He said he’s a natural procrastinator and would think about donating, and then would get distracted by other things. I asked whether our numerous daily reminders were helpful and he said they definitely were. A reminder could catch him at a moment when he had the time and focus to click the link and contribute.
So, hopefully, now is the time when a reminder to help Lutheran Social Services by Christmas presents for foster kids prompts you to donate. Please, click here. Thanks.

the remidners help a great deal, I’m usually checking CapFax during work hours and will see the reminders but be busy with other stuff - so good to have the repeated reminders.
There’s a reason campaigns email us 5 times a day for fundraising — it works

While I don’t have a nomination for contract, I’m nominating Mike Ziri from Equality Illinois for in-house. I call him the Energizer Bunny - always on the go. He is a major reason why I felt safe raising an LGBTQ person in our state. He’s also an outstanding person who always finds the time to listen.
We are lucky to have him advocate for us.
Comment by Proud Papa Bear Monday, Dec 16, 24 @ 11:33 am
Litesa Wallace is the best contract lobbyist hands down. She takes the time to educate her clients on the issues she advocates for.
Comment by Jessica Monday, Dec 16, 24 @ 11:45 am
Jelani Sadiq with Advance Illinois for in house lobbyist is incredible. He is tireless and one of the hardest working lobbyists I know. He knows the issues inside and out, understands the opposition’s perspective. He is also incredibly skilled at strategy. He is also pleasure to work with and always working to advance equity in our public education system,
Comment by Rep Monday, Dec 16, 24 @ 11:58 am
I second the sentiment for Litesa Wallace as contract lobbyist! She is a tireless and thoughtful advocate and has gotten up to speed so quickly on our issues!
Comment by Laurel Monday, Dec 16, 24 @ 12:02 pm
Litesa Wallace is the only option for best contract lobbyist. Her knowledge, experience, vision, and compassion solidifies her top of her class. A strong negotiator, and an eye for detail.
Comment by T-Mil Monday, Dec 16, 24 @ 12:08 pm
I’d like to nominate Ryan Taylor for Best Contract Lobbyist. He consistently demonstrates a calm, cool, and collected approach to negotiations. Additionally, I’m seconding the nomination of Jelani Sadiq for Best In-House Lobbyist. His deep knowledge of the issues and legislative process, combined with an exceptional work ethic, makes him truly outstanding.
Comment by AngylFyre Monday, Dec 16, 24 @ 12:42 pm
Contract Lobbyist continues to be Liz Brown Reaves…best at counting noses and knowing the are 2 chambers and a governor involved in the how a bill becomes a law thing.
In Houseer should go someone like Mark Kolaz at ILSOS cause he really knows his stuff.
Comment by Annonin' Monday, Dec 16, 24 @ 12:58 pm
Contract: Dave Lowitzki. Dave takes the time to fully understand not just the specific issue he’s working for a client, but the client’s history and long term goals. He works his roll calls hard, keeps clients, sponsors, and coalitions informed and engaged, and does it all while being one of the nicest guys in the building.
In House: Tim Jackson, AIDS Foundation of Chicago. There’s a little bit of a theme here, because Tim is also thorough, accurate, and detail oriented. Tim navigates challenging roll calls without breaking a sweat, passing complex public health policy with bipartisan majorities.

Contract Lobbyist- Josh Witkowski. He works hard for the clients he has and is always willing to collaborate and listen to others. He did a great job with ABATE and will do well as a contract lobbyist in the years to come. Plus, he’s just a good guy.
In-House Lobbyist- Hands down, Mark Denzler is the best person representing his members. The guy is a workhorse and understands how to work effectively with the Governor and his team to advance the interests of manufacturers in the state.
Comment by ModerateGOP Monday, Dec 16, 24 @ 2:13 pm
For Best Contract Lobbyist, I would like to get beyond the perennial favorites and nominate a rising star in the lobbying world - Jessica Basham. Jessica is obviously not a stranger to Springfield, and her previous associations might not be helping her at the moment. However, her experience, work ethic, ability to navigate the process, coupled with her genuine kindness, integrity, and authenticity is going to make her one of the “In Demand” contract lobbyists of the future. If I were looking to hire a contract lobbyist, I would look to retain Jessica NOW! In the next couple of years, if not already, she is going to be able to begin choosing her clients!
For Best In-House Lobbyist I would like to nominate James Swansey from Restore Justice. James is fairly new to Springfield and it shows - because he is willing to talk to everyone on both sides of the aisle and in both chambers if he feels it will help move forward the issues that Restore Justice is advocating for. In addition, he is a realist when it comes to solving issues and working towards solutions. For those of you who frequent the Capitol and do not know James, introduce yourself and learn about his story and how he took a second chance at life to turn it into an opportunity for success!

Frances Orenic for best in-house lobbyist at the IL AFL-CIO. She worked in the suburbs on the Workers’ Rights Amendment and was the key factor in passing a bill that allowed workers to avoid captive audience meetings.
Best contract lobbyist - Dave Sullivan respectively lobbies labor issues, business issues and social issues. No one does it better
Comment by South of I-80 Monday, Dec 16, 24 @ 2:45 pm
I agree with the nominations of Frances Orenic and Dave Sullivan. They are both impressive and effective. Both are diligent, hard working and friendly. These are rare combinations in life much less in the frenzied world of Illinois politics and government.

Want to second Dave Lowitzki for best contract lobbyist! He’s always working to deliver on human services and make our state a better place to live.
Also seconding Frances Orenic for in-house, for her tireless advocacy for working people!
Comment by AlsoNotMe Monday, Dec 16, 24 @ 3:09 pm
I’ll second the suggestion for Frances Orenic at the Illinois AFL-CIO. In her role, Frances immediately dove in the deep end of the pool and has been instrumental in navigating several complex pieces of legislation including the pay transparency and captive audience bills that will become law on January 1. She has a diverse set of affiliate members to represent and always handles it with grace and professionalism.

When it comes to getting things done, Dominic Watson stands head and shoulders above the rest—and he’s my pick for the Golden Horseshoe Awards Best In-House Lobbyist!
As a key part of AFSCME’s powerhouse legislative team, Dominic has proven time and again that he’s a force to be reckoned with. He’s tackled some of the hottest issues in Springfield, including fighting for equitable higher education funding and championing workers’ rights. A Capitol staple since his days with Andy Manar, Dominic brings unmatched experience, strategy, and determination to the table.
But Dominic’s impact doesn’t stop at the Statehouse. He’s a true community leader in Springfield, working tirelessly to uplift and empower those who need it most. From grassroots initiatives to big-picture solutions, his dedication to making a difference is inspiring.
Dominic Watson embodies what it means to be the best in-house lobbyist—brilliant, relentless, and community-driven. Hats off to a leader who truly deserves this recognition. He’s got my vote!
Comment by LaborMePlease Monday, Dec 16, 24 @ 3:25 pm
Dave Sullivan is hands down my favorite lobbyist. Kind, generous, confidant is how I would describe him. He always gets the job done awith a smile!
In house is Marc Poulos the stylish go to man for all sides when the issues get tough.
Comment by Tired of BS Monday, Dec 16, 24 @ 3:37 pm
As someone who has been around the Capitol for longer than I care to admit, I strongly support the nominations for Francis. Tim Drea is a fabulous guy and knows his stuff, and one of the smartest decisions he ever made was bringing her on. If you’ve ever negotiated with her, you know she is sharp, honest, and open minded. She isn’t looking for a fight - she looks to solve problems. That’s a rarity in this business these days. The sky is the limit for this brilliant woman and I look forward to seeing where she’s going in the future.
Comment by Oldtimers Monday, Dec 16, 24 @ 3:44 pm
In-house- Kyle Hillman, NASW-IL, contract- Dave Lowizki. Two very smart, very savvy, both know how to educate & apply pressure when needed. They both probably have ‘do-gooder’ in their Wikis (if they have them).
Comment by Loyal Virus Monday, Dec 16, 24 @ 4:10 pm
Contract lobbysit– Liz Brown. She works night and day for her clients and has some of the deepest relationships in state government. She can work a roll call like no other and always knows her stuff. Her clients are well served by her and the work she puts in.
Best in house — Robb Karr. He knows how to strike a deal and get things done for his association. He’s practical and doesn’t overpromise or underdeliver.
Comment by blues Monday, Dec 16, 24 @ 4:14 pm
Contract lobbyist recognition has to go to the incredible Liz Brown. She’s always on the forefront of issues for her clients, and gets it done better than anyone in town. Her dedication and follow through is unmatched, across a very diverse portfolio of industries. She also has a network that’s extensive and meaningful, and she is constantly working to build up others and their meaningful causes.
Comment by kevin mccallister Monday, Dec 16, 24 @ 4:17 pm
I nominate Liz Brown-Reeves. She is the best lobbyist because she has not only years of experience, but she is an expert in how to get the right people involved to make sure she gets a successful result! She is the hardest working lobbyist I know!
Comment by BJ Monday, Dec 16, 24 @ 4:18 pm
This is easy - contract lobbyist is Liz Brown Reeves all the way. This town is rich with talented contract lobbyists, but show me anyone who’s getting more stuff done for clients than her. I can’t of anyone else at this moment in time.
In-house lobbyist for me is Jennifer Creasey at University of Illinois. She’s a pro and collaborator who has served the state well as a longtime public servant.
Comment by Shytown Monday, Dec 16, 24 @ 4:19 pm
Contract lobbying requires hustle. And honesty, there’s still no matching the roll call hustle that Liz Brown Reeves consistently produces for her clients. She works both chambers, both sides of the aisle, the constitutional officers, and the leadership at every level. While she’s got many years ahead of her, shes already built a legendary reputation. Tell her something can’t be done - I dare ya.
Comment by Used To Be Somebody Monday, Dec 16, 24 @ 4:19 pm
How has John Amdor not been nominated yet? It feels like he and his colleagues only ever take on nearly impossible tasks and yet consistently deliver.
I’m gonna second the nomination of James Swansey. On top of just being a good dude, he’s also incredibly brave for his willingness to share his personal story and tie it to the work Restore Justice does. That also makes him an incredibly effective communicator and advocate.
Comment by SweetLou86 Monday, Dec 16, 24 @ 4:21 pm
I nominate Nick Boyle for in house lobbyist. His tenacity, focus, and dedication are unmatched!
Comment by BJ Monday, Dec 16, 24 @ 4:22 pm
Forgot to add the in-house nomination… but it’s tough. I’d have to agree with those who’ve put Robb Karr on the list. He’s got integrity and an honest understanding of his constituents. I don’t think there’s a door he can’t open in the capitol, and that says something.
Comment by Used To Be Somebody Monday, Dec 16, 24 @ 4:23 pm
I nominate Liz Brown-Reeves for contract lobbyist. Her experience and drive are like no one in the business. She puts 110% into everything she does. She knows how to get it done!!
Comment by BJ Monday, Dec 16, 24 @ 4:27 pm
Derek Blaida does a great job - he represents several organizations I work with - he gets to know each legislator and he effectively works both sides of the aisle, he was instrumental in getting several bills passed this year. He is also unassuming which is a rare quality for a lobbyist
Comment by Donnie Elgin Monday, Dec 16, 24 @ 4:33 pm
I agree with others that Liz Brown Reeves is hands down the best contract lobbyist under the dome. Her work ethic and ability to build relationships are unmatched. And whether you’re a big or small client, she’s going to take your issue seriously and give you the same amount of attention. You definitely want her on your side.
Comment by Clark Griswold Monday, Dec 16, 24 @ 4:35 pm
Another nomination for Liz Brown-Reeves for contract lobbyist. Liz combines strategy, savvy, and pragmatism to get things done for her clients. She always goes above and beyond and demonstrates care and passion in her work and in her relationships. The best!

Best contract lobbyist - hands down, Liz Brown-Reeves. There is no one with better connections or who hustles harder than this woman. Everyone feels more confident when she is on their team.
Best in-house lobbyist - Erin O’Brien. She is strong and tough when she needs to be. Holds her ground and has built a solid reputation for herself at the capital.
Comment by Central Suzie Monday, Dec 16, 24 @ 4:43 pm
Liz Brown and Mark Denzler are total powerhouses.
Liz Brown as a contract lobbyist, brings unmatched strategic insights and deep understanding of the legislative process. Her ability to navigate complex political landscapes and build meaningful relationships is truly remarkable. Liz’s approach is extremely collaborative- she knows how to bring stakeholders together to achieve shared goals.
Mark Denzler with IMA is an in house advocate for the business community. His ability to articulate complex issues with clarity and precision makes him a trusted voice among legislators.
His leadership and dedication are evident in his ability to deliver impactful results.
Both Liz and Mark are incredibly invaluable and so thankful I get to work with them both.

Best contract lobbyist - Litesa Wallace I have learned so so much as a college student from watching her work. I truly admire her ambition and compassion for others. She is truly amazing at what she does and all she continues to do.
Best in house lobbyist - Absolutely Jelani Sadiq they are absolutely amazing at what they do and I’ve learned truly so much from them as well. I’m thankful that I am continuously to work around such incredible individuals and that I am continuously taught more and more each day.

Liz Brown-Reeves is the emblematic contract lobbyist who others aspire to emulate. She is experienced, intelligent, respected, and tenacious, and has strong relationships with those who make things happen in Springfield. Yes, there are other great lobbyists who do great jobs in their own right, but very few rival Liz’s ability to deliver for clients. She’s the bar.

Best Contract Lobbyist: Litesa Wallace.
Dr. Wallace, herself a former legislator, has been a tremendous asset in not only helping our Association understand the legislative process but also in communicating our issues to legislators. She quickly and completely understood our agenda and helps us develop effective strategies that help us get the best possible outcome. Her interpersonal skills are tremendous. I highly recommend her for Best Contract Lobbyist Award.

Best Contract Lobbyist - Liz Brown Reeves hands down. I know she’s been nominated and won before but this is a real contest and we don’t award participation lol. Liz is the best person I’ve seen with a roll call. She handles her clients with a a deftness and clarity I respect. I think she’s spent 20 years proving she knows how to operate better than almost anyone else.
Best In House - Mark Denzler. Denzler does a hell of a job representing business and manufacturing in Illinois. Probably better than any other business representative in the state. He’s a Republican but has managed to build a very good relationship with the Governor’s office. He’s great and deserves this honor.

Lots of great names…gotta go with Liz Brown though. Liz had a great 2024 with the passage of Carbon Capture, Child Tax Credit and a big role at the DNC.
In house - Mark Denzler gets the job done. He is able to make sure business is a major player in a big blue state.

Nomination for Liz Brown who hustles hard for her clients while being willing to listen to stakeholders all around and find solutions. Keeps her eye on the prize all the way through and it shows with the impressive client roster she keeps.

I nominate Liz Brown-Reeves for best contract lobbyist. Her connections run deep and she goes above and beyond when it comes to working for her clients. I recently had the opportunity to hear her speak to a young leaders group and I was incredibly impressed with her ability to know her audience and effectively motivate the next generation of leaders.
Mark Denzler for in house at IMA. He is always looking for new ways to work for his membership. He is well-versed and he surrounds himself with a talented team. His relationships are strong on both sides of the aisle and he gets the job done. Proud to call him a friend.

Dave Sullivan has to be the best contract lobbyist in the Capitol. He is the first one in of a morning and last to leave. Works hard for his clients and works great on both sides of the aisle. You couldn’t ask for a better lobbyist or friend.

Litesa Wallace for Contract Lobbyist, Litesa knows how to produce bills which have gotten passed in Springfield while serving three terms as the 67th District in Rockford Illinois as a Representative, Litesa is very qualified to be “Contract Lobbyist”.

Litesa Wallace would be a great Contract Lobbyist! She takes her work seriously and doesn’t stop till she has her information down packed before putting out any information. Litesa has been asked numerous times to run for various political positions.
Comment by Muscles Monday, Dec 16, 24 @ 9:00 pm
Lobbying is totally different these day! As you walk around the capitol very few lobbyists are there early in the morning or late at night; except for Dave Sullivan! You see him in the committees, walking the halls, coming out of offices. The guy is everywhere but he always takes the time to say hello, help out new lobbyists or staffers: I really think he tries to get to know everyone by name even us who really don’t matter in the big picture.
Comment by Been around Monday, Dec 16, 24 @ 9:05 pm
In-Hose kinda has of hard one since most of them very good but have an advantage since they only have to concentrate on issue that might impact 1 company or organization. Probably Mark Denzler has the edge with a lot of members to make happy.
Contract Lobbyists should go to Dave Sullivan. Take a look at the list of clients he must make happy! Wow major issues year after year! See comments above do I need to say anymore….Best quality is he is very sincere and never forgets where he started. Staffer to Senator to Lobbyist. You need something done he is the one everyone calls! Let’s not forget the parties he organizes! Best Ever!

Litesa’s exceptional ability to build relationships and leverage strong connections across both chambers has been instrumental in advancing our goals and ensuring our priorities are effectively communicated to lawmakers. Her comprehensive understanding of the legislative process, coupled with her strategic insight and unwavering tenacity, consistently delivers outstanding results. Beyond her stellar performance, Litesa is a trusted partner who exemplifies professionalism, dedication, and reliability. Her expertise and commitment make her an invaluable asset, and she is truly deserving of this recognition.

For in-house lobbyist, I’d like to nominate Katie Stanczykiewicz with Planned Parenthood. As a woman living in this state, I have a lot to be grateful for, but I know that with Katie at the helm at PP, my healthcare and the right to healthcare for the trans community have a fierce defender. She stepped into this role and immediately made her presence known here in Springfield. She gets to know people by name, is committed and passionate about her organization, and is hardworking. I’m excited to see her continue her work and see how far she goes.
Comment by MaryT Tuesday, Dec 17, 24 @ 9:02 am
There are way too many people here nominating in just one category. That usually is evidence of an organized campaign, which is not necessarily frowned upon, but not exactly encouraged.
However, I’m going to discard the legion of one-noters when making a decision.
