  1. As miserable as Bears season was, a win over Packers at least leaves me with a bit of hope.

  2. https://tinyurl.com/2vfts854 I thought of Capitolfax when I saw this during the break. It made me think of how some people hated Obamacare but freaked out when they saw what they might lose in repealing the ACA. Good on them for making smart resource decisions based on the impact of the legislation.

  3. With ND winning, we are one step closer to NIU being national champs.

    If it ends up ND vs Ohio State for the championship game my son has proposed a Michigan NIU undercard for the true national champ.

  4. Two other college footballl related things.

    For the Governor’s socail media team.

    Calling out U of I for its bowl win and not NIU… Come on, man, it seems everyone went to U of I; plenty of folks went to other state schools.

    North Central in Naperville won the DIII national championship. Not too late to mention that.

  5. Digging out. Have to agree with the Rs on this one, ridiculous Session not canceled. To be fair, the state bean bill is an emergency../s

  6. Please fix the tier 2 pension. It’s the right and lawful thing to do.

  7. The Bears finally beating the Packers cleanses the palate a bit of the terrible year they’ve had.

  8. = tier 2 =

    Tier 2 was the fix

  9. ===Tier 2 was the fix ===

    Like many of the efforts of Governor Pat Quinn, Tier 2 has caused more problems than it addressed and the long term consequences and impacts of change on the state weren’t really considered.

  10. ===Tier 2 has caused more problems than it addressed===

    I highly doubt that’s the case.

  11. -How many more days into this new year will we get before Dick Durbin announces his retirement after the end of this term?

    -Cheers for Illini basketball’s first Big Ten road wins in the Pacific northwest and the awesome Citrus Bowl victory.

    -Is Tier 2 reform as pressing an issue after the Social Security Fairness Act just got through Congress?

  12. Tier 2 fixed one problem, the amount the Edgar, et al, Ramp steepness / sum total.

    It created 2 other problems.

    (1) the IRS Safe Harbor issue,which is getting (mostly) addressed. The only problem with the ‘fix’ is that it is based on averages, so it will still be possible that some non-SERS (aka TRS, SURS, Life/Safety) retirees may receive less than they would have under SS … but that’s a problem for another day.

    (2) the employee recruitment issue. I’m not sure there is a definite study / answer to it, but there is a perception that people are less likely to enter a government career because of Tier 2. It used to be that government salaries were low compared to the private sector, but the tradeoff / reward was the Tier 1 pension. Now government salaries are up some, maybe not private sector level, but closer than before. And if anyone is really interested in retirement security, Tier 2 is better than just about anything the private sector offers unless you manage a moonshot with your personal IRA / 401K (most people don’t). And you still have the (non-matched) 457 / Deferred Comp plan employees can contribute to … sling with the unique 457 provision you can withdraw the money at any age once you’ve left government service.

    Both those problems are minor and can always be tweaked for improvement in the future.

  13. Back to work after two weeks off. Sadly, spent the entire break in bed after getting a bad bit of the virus that’s going around. Hope everyone else has been able to stay healthy and warm this winter.

  15. Just sitting here looking at the snow in the driveway. Shoveled a path from the house to the garage. Managed to get to the car sitting outside with the wife’s birthday card hidden inside it.
