Pritzker: ‘If you come to the table looking to spend more – I’m going to ask you where you want to cut’

* More from the governor’s speech

As always, I stand ready to work with members of the General Assembly to deliberate and negotiate the final budget. But let’s be clear, I will only sign a balanced budget. If you come to the table looking to spend more – I’m going to ask you where you want to cut. I have made difficult decisions – including to programs I have championed, which is hard for me, just as I know some of the difficult decisions you will have to make will be hard for you.

  1. Translation: I’ve made the cuts that are realistic and politically feasible. If the Legislature wants to do something different, then the GA will have to take the heat.

  3. Wish he’d also said “IF you want to cut / eliminate taxes, I’m going to ask you which revenue increases / expenditure decreases you want.”

I appreciate this rhetoric. The problem with this rhetoric is that JB Pritzker is a billionaire. He has been wealthy his entire life. He has maintained his wealth his entire life. His understanding of what it is like to be working class and what is like to have a program that one depends on cut is at best that of a tourist.

He is opening himself to criticism as to whether or not this is hard for him.
