City officials confirmed reports that President Trump is sending ICE tactical teams to Chicago, a move that precipitated massive protests in Los Angeles.
At a Wednesday afternoon news conference, Chief of Staff Cristina Pacione-Zayas said the city has received word that the tactical teams were given 48-hour notice to “stand by and be ready to deploy.”
“There will be tactical teams, mini-tanks, other tools they use in which they plan to do raids, as we saw in Los Angeles,” Pacione-Zayas said.
Mayor Brandon Johnson confirmed he had spoken with Gov. JB Pritzker about an hour before the news conference, as well as Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, and that he is working to coordinate with both the state and county about these tactical teams. They are keeping open lines of communication, Johnson said.

According to the sources, the teams will be activated in Seattle, Chicago, Philadelphia, northern Virginia, including Washington, D.C., and New York.
It is not clear if raids in these regions will begin immediately, but units in those areas have been told to be ready to deploy, the sources said.
The potential deployments come amid protests nationwide driven by anger over Trump’s stepped-up enforcement of immigration laws that critics say are tearing apart migrant families.
“It’s a moment for our communities to come together,” Brandon Lee, communications director at Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, told NBC Chicago. “It’s a moment for us to make sure we are looking out for one another and it’s a moment to make it plain and clear that it is ICE and the Trump administration that is making the communities less safe.”

The use of militarized federal police units has frightening precedents in US history and elsewhere (Weimar, anyone?). It is another in a now steady breach of longstanding norms and practices that have buttressed democracy in this country since de Tocqueville first analyzed them in 1835. Erode these norms and practices, and the structures built on them will not long stand. And all the while one party is consumed by supine adoration of a destructive megalomaniac as the other stumbles lost in a wilderness of its own making. It does no good to look to the next election if there may not be one or if the constitutional structure has been mortally wounded. Resistance is required now, but where is it? Where will it come from if militarized police and the military itself are loosed against it in the streets? I tell you honestly, in all my 78 years I have never been as afraid for our democratic Republic as I am now.

As a retiree from the Illinois Army Nation Guard, I am glad that I will not have to participate in this egregious overreach, should it come to pass. I took and oath sworn to The Constitution, not an individual. I hope our current service members continue to hold that true.

Pritzker needs to be calling out Trump that he’s too scared to bring ICE to Houston, Phoenix, Miami, Tampa, Cleveland.
Starts connecting dots that this is purely political and calling Trump scared. He’ll get exposed. Do not let Brandon Johnson be the face of this, it will end up worse than the George Floyd riots five years ago.

Expect Trump to announce tomorrow that he’s sending in the troops to keep Chicago from “burning to the ground.”
When will people stop believing his obvious nonsense?
