* Officials: 10th license winner coming soon

Officials are confident the state’s 10th casino license - which has been tied up in litigation for the last decade - finally will be given out this year.

Sixty applications for the lucrative and final gambling license have been sent out so far, said officials from a firm in charge of evaluating suitors before the Illinois Gaming Board makes the final call.

“There’s been a high degree of interest, which is good,” said David Luwisch, a director at Credit Suisse, said Wednesday.

Applications are due Oct. 14, and the next day Credit Suisse will announce the entities that bid, how many millions they are prepared to ante up, and proposed project locations before whittling the list down to three finalists.

“Responsible governments don’t borrow money to pay the bills especially after raising taxes to record levels.” Claypool said. “What Todd Stroger is saying is he’s borrowing money to pay the bills even though he just raised your [sales] taxes by $420 million. He’s showing extraordinary financial mismanagement and arrogance.”

  1. Maybe I’m just jaded after the finacial problems created by the federal gumment, but does anyone else see the process of awarding the 10th casino license as ripe for cronyism and bribery? I just have the feeling that some pockets will be stuffed with cash before this is over.

  2. Hey Kevin, you missed the great Tammy Duckworth using a state van to endorse the vaunted Dan Seals. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-veterans-duckworth-sealssep18,0,4909898.story

  3. Ravenswood, SSSSHHH!!! No criticism of liberal Democrats!

But seriously, folks … just why is Duckie allowed to drive a state-owned vehicle around on her “personal” time? And, why is she not only using it for electioneering purposes, but dumb enough to get caught doing it? This is the judgment of a person the liberal left keeps trying to cram down our throats as a congresscritter? This is someone whose opinion we should allow to influence our votes. The opposite of what SHE said!

  4. Listen, Duckworth apologized, now let it go. She didn’t mean to break the law, honest.

  5. Wumpus is a right…in Illinois, all a pol needs to do is apologize and everything is cool.

  6. I have no problem with the basic bond refinancing package presented to the County Board by Todd Stroger. However, If Forest Claypool is correct (I assume he is) in asserting that the Stroger administration is also seeking to issue bonds to fund current operating budget needs, I am adamantly opposed to the portion of the bond package that seeks to do so.

Funding operating costs with a bond issue seems to me to be the public sector equivalent of the derivatives crisis afflicting the American banking/financial system. In other words, it is a road certain to lead the way to fiscal perdition and eventual insolvency/bankruptcy. Consequntly I consider it irresponsible and reckless.

  7. The tollway’s executive director and chief engineer have seen their pay increase by 58 percent since 2006, agency records show. The tollway’s chief of operations has gotten a 93 percent raise in that time.
Still, the number of people making more than $100,000 a year at the agency has more than doubled — from 15 in 2006 to 38 this year.

Go back to 2004 salaries and it’s more mind boggling!
And this doesn’t account for the high-priced farmed out consulting friends of Blagojevich.

  8. Captain America is right. Borrow more money for Stroger to spend now? Didn’t he just raise taxes to the sky? And what’s with the Republicans on the county board? Aren’t they supposed to be for fiscal responsibility? I guess party labels don’t mean much in Crook County.

  9. Kudos to Durbin for agreeing to debate Sauerberg. He didn’t have to (I can’t remember the last mayoral debate) and probably won’t get anything out of it, but it reeks of good sportsmanship!

  10. The U.S. Senate debate should include all five candidates. The Constitution Party nominee, Chad Koppie, agrees with the republican platform more than the republican nominee, Steve Sauerberg, agrees with it. Koppie is pro-life and pro-gun rights, but Sauerberg is pro-choice and anti-gun rights.
