The Near West Side school Thursday was told officials want to close Carpenter — where students are 97 percent low-income — and turn its building over to a Gold Coast elementary recently approved for a new high school.
“I’m still in shock. You’re taking our school to give to rich kids? What about poor kids? I’m so angry,” said parent Patricia Herron.
Chicago Public Schools officials declined comment, saying school closings, to be announced next week, haven’t been finalized.

I can’t believe that Chicago still has schools were kids are 97% percent low income. Family income has replaced race as the 21st century segregation. If the kids have to go to another school which is equally segregated as to income, this mother is right to be angry.

I like the differences in reporting on Chicago’s loss of congestion relief funds. Crains reports that Chicago missed the deadline. Other local papers write stories saying the feds are at fault for not extending the deadline. That is kind of unfair finger pointing — the requirements and the deadline were clear. The congestion pricing was a core part of the program and was the same reason New York lost these funds — they couldn’t pass the pricing part.
