Gov. Quinn demonstrates why yodeling should replace the Illinois official state song (see lyrics below) as part of the reforms suggested by his Commission.
Illinois
Written by C.H. Chamberlain
Composed by Archibald Johnston
By thy rivers gently flowing, Illinois, Illinois,
O’er thy prairies verdant growing, Illinois, Illinois,
Comes an echo on the breeze.
Rustling through the leafy trees, and its mellow tones are these, Illinois, Illinois,
And its mellow tones are these, Illinois.
From a wilderness of prairies, Illinois, Illinois,
Straight thy way and never varies, Illinois, Illinois,
Till upon the inland sea,
Stands thy great commerical tree, turning all the world to thee, Illinois, Illinois,
Turning all the world to thee, Illinois.
When you heard your country calling, Illinois, Illinois,
Where the shot and shell were falling, Illinois, Illinois,
When the Southern host withdrew,
Pitting Gray against the Blue, There were none more brave than you, Illinois, Illinois,
There were none more brave than you, Illinois.
Not without thy wondrous story, Illinois, Illinois,
Can be writ the nation’s glory, Illinois, Illinois,
On the record of thy years,
Abraham Lincoln’s name appears, Grant and Logan, and our tears, Illinois, Illinois,
Grant and Logan, and our tears, Illinois.

Six, I had to look it up. You’re half right. It’s Ohio’s Official Rock Song, but doesn’t replace the other official state song.
Rich, there’s a QOTD: Illinois’ Official Rock Song.

Chimack, well done.
“Home on the Range” for Kansas, excellent.
My favorite title is “I’m from New Jersey.” I imagine the next verse is “You gotta problem with that?”
I’m embarrassed that I forgot about “My Old Kentucky Home.” I went to a Kentucky-Indiana game at Rupp Arena once and the entire crowd sang the song at the beginning of the game, led by an angel-voiced co-ed. Very sincere and moving.

Keeping with the song theme, PQ does resemble Jim Nabors belting out “Back Home in Indiana” at the Indy 500. All he would need is Dawn Netsch standing next to him to cackle, “Lady and Gentlemen………………start yer ingines!”
I always thought that was the IN state song, and was also surprised to learn that the terrible “Hail to the Victors” is not the State Anthem of the State of Michigan.

See here, the Illinois song is very beautiful and the melody quite pleasant, very reminiscent of Indian’s fine anthem. If you ever get to hear the U of I choral singers perform it, you’ll get chills. They usually add a final new verse that goes with whatever the agenda of the event needs.
That song was always sung at our state inaugurals, had a lot of “gravitas” until Blago came in and decided hip hop was better. Among other things of his that need reversing, we need to hear that anthem more often.
As far as Pat, I will go with “Homey don’t play dat”.
Comment by I like our song Tuesday, Apr 21, 09 @ 5:46 pm
He’s clearly saying the word “No”, very forcefully. So perhaps this is him giving his response to the legislature’s gaming of the tax debate on Lisa Madigan’s behalf.
