I’ve been monitoring the latest candidate filings and noticed that Ron Gidwitz hadn’t filed his petitions for governor yet.
I called the Gidwitz campaign and was told that both he and running mate Steve Rauschenberger would file together - most likely next Monday, the last day of filing.
That would put them on the bottom of the ticket, unless someone else files at the end of business Monday as well.
Use this as a candidate filing open thread. What interesting tidbits have you gleaned from today’s petition filings?
UPDATE: I’m told that statewide Republican candidates who don’t have primary opponents will all be filing at the end of the filing week.

Topinka, Oberweis, and Brady all filed this morning so Gidwitz should get the last spot (unless some unknown candidate comes out of the woodwork with 5,000+ signatures on the last day).

Looks like it’s going to be a crowded Lt. Gov. race for the GOP. Do, you know who Jeremy Cole is? Also, If Birkett, Wegman, Cole, Rauschenberger, and Salvi are all on the ballot who do you predict wins?

I had heard that the real reason Rauchen …oops, Gidwitz/Rauchenberger didn’t file was because filing at 8 AM on the first day reeked of the “business as usual” way of filing. Reform! File days later! Filing is overrated anyway.

WHAT IS THIS???? ISBE looks like it’s keeping TWO separate lists of today’s filings!! There’s the link above to over 400. But if you go into the ISBE site and click on “campaign disclosure” and then “candidates”, and then “2006″ (and no other search criteria), there’s another 164 (at last count). And guess what?? Gidwitz and Eisendrath are on the “164″ list!!! What gives????

At noon, the only candidates who have filed petitions for the 6th District House seat are Roskam, Cegelis and Scott.
Nothing yet from the DCCC’s candidate.

YOU SAW IT HERE FIRST – look for one additional candidate to file late in the Gov. race and immediately catapult to front-runner status. He has been in the news a lot lately. Coincidentally there has been chatter about him leaving his current job.

Studies have shown people first on the can have on average up to 5% better vote getting ability. Unlike us hacks, who live this stuff, many people just “punch” the first name they see. So filing on the first day isn’t overrated. I used to tell my candidates–first or last–don’t get stuck in the middle. Hack that!!

Donald Rumsfeld is not filing — I’m sure someone would have noticed petitions circulating for him. I can’t believe I am even addressing this.

I had a good laugh Saturday at the grocery store when a guy was asking people to sign a petition for Burkett stating “Joe is running for Lt. Gov and will be running WITH JBT.” I told him that is wishful thinking and misleading people because the high vote getter for Lt. Gov will run with the high vote getter for Gov. Perhaps that will be JBT and Joe. Perhaps not. He agreed but I’m sure he continued with his story on subsequent people.

Mohammed– There is data for Hacks comment, but I cannot cite to specific studies. I thought from my recollection of my political science courses that the number was more like 10 percent in a multicandidate primary with low name recognition. I’m not sure it applies in a high profile race.

For those who haven’t seen the two lists, I think the second list referred to in Crank-Tankerous’ 11:42 am post is the list of candidates named by existing political committees, not the list of candidates who have filed. These are separate lists, so be sure you’re looking at the right one. Gidwitz and Rauschenberger both have political committtees, and I presume both have said they are supporting themselves in the 2006 elections, but that’s not the same as filing petitions.

I’m guessing Poe is out for Lt. Gov. It seems that there is too much pressure from the powers that be; for him to keep his House seat. I was told that he was looking at “the bigger picture.” He spent all of this time and for what? To see these people get out and undercut his efforts at the last minute. I will be the first to say that I’m sorry to see him possibly leave the race. He clearly wanted this more than the other candidates that had already announced for LT. Gov.

Liz Brown is/was an attorney on Madigan’s staff. “PO Box 518″ is the address for the IL Democratic Party. If she is still on the state payroll, it’s Interesting that she grabbed the petition copy during “state” time.

I was at the gym tonight and I saw some guy wearing a Blago campaign T-Shirt (which in Springfield is grounds for getting beat up but I digress……). The front had Rod’s name and website. The back had Rod’s list of great accomplishments like providing health care to all kids, stuff like that, but then in large and bold letters it proudly displayed that “Did All That Without Raising The Income or Sales Tax!” I just about puked all over my stairmaster.
Can we expect him to put out a t-shirt that he screwed our kids for generations to come too?

I noticed that JBT had 2 other staffers with her today when she filed. In fact, they were in line way before 5:00. However, because she showed up closer to 8:00 the two men were forced to let some people go in front because they didn’t have their candidate.
The line of candidates was as follows: Brady, Obeweis and Topinka. I am assuming all filed with 10,000.
The Topinka campaign had 2 staffers in line; The Brady campaign had 2 staffers in line and The Oberweis campaign drove up in that big red truck with the sign in the back and got immediate attention. Later in the day, Brady and wife showed up as well as Topinka and hords of people from the Oberweis staff. I counted at least 6 staffers.

Sure, Feeling Better. But only if that ends with, “…which is no different from what my Republican predecessors did for the last 25 years by recklessly spending and refusing to adequately fund the state’s pensions.”

First of all: Nobody in their right mind is going to let state workers do campaign work on state time, so let it go. If you really think that the law is being broken, don’t go randomly post it on-line somewhere. It’s not right to put so much focus on a 22 year old intern without some proof.
To Glad You’re Feeling Better : Although I’ll admit past Governor’s could have done better at planning for the future, they didn’t go out of their way to screw tomorrow so as to spend today. Everyone has told Blago these decisions are wrong for the State’s future, and time and time again all he cares about is the really cool press release he can release in the morning.
DO NOT even try to defend the pension raid, or that All Kids isn’t going to but us in the red two years from now.

P.S. Thanks for being glad that I’m feeling better, but I’m feeling better because I know Blago’s days are numbered. The public is catching on to his style of spending like a college kid with a new credit card they signed up for in the dorms and not worrying about the bill until later.
