  1. No. Who cares? They both suck.

Comment by Bill Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 12:24 pm

  2. 10 days to the Bears!!!

Comment by Butkus Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 12:25 pm

  3. 1.5 months until the Hawks start…..

    Comment by I'm just saying Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 12:26 pm

  4. They should call it the game of shame. No one should attend in protest of 2 severely underachieving teams. This is the most dissapointed I’ve ever been in a cub team. It’s one thing to choke-that happens every year, but it’s another to be paid like kings in a recession and then to quit on fans.

This season is almost as bad as 03.

Comment by Shore Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 12:27 pm

  5. No…I have officially given up on Chicago baseball and have cut down on my drinking and meds…feeling better every day…

    Comment by Anonymous45 Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 12:29 pm

  6. Seeing as though this game his no affect on either team’s chances to make the playoffs this late in the season, I guess what I would say is “Cheers!”

Comment by Obamarama Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 12:29 pm

  7. Why bother?

    Comment by Cheryl44 Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 12:29 pm

  8. Hmmm — the Cubs in September vs. a team that has decided to throw in the towel. What’s the over-under on the number of players who find an excuse not to even dress for the game?

Comment by Anon Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 12:30 pm

  9. How bout them Bears?

Comment by SweetLou Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 12:33 pm

  10. The Cubs will win. We always do well when it is pointless. I still love em - always will. A bit more depressing this year than usual.

Comment by Say WHAT? Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 12:34 pm

  11. Who has the best. Wait tell next year story. Other wise know as the Cubs Slogan

Comment by Go Cardinals Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 12:36 pm

  12. If COmcast were smart they would add the Cardinals to all IL system…best baseball in America.
My condolences to Cubs fans for the 101st year.
I suggest the future include losing the mopes and the senile old man.
p.s. that does not mean you need Ryne “Never Got My Uniform Dirty” Sandberg.

Comment by Reddbyrd Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 12:37 pm

  13. MLB equivalent of Hynes vs. Quinn
Nothing to inspire future generations to take up the game.

Comment by Michelle Flaherty Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 12:39 pm

  14. I need a beer.

Comment by VanillaMan Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 12:41 pm

  15. The Cubs will sell out the stadium! lol

Sox have overachieved with a bad team. Cubs underachieved with a bunch of million dollar babies, Hillary Swank and Clint Eastwood should do the 7th inning stretch.

Comment by Wumpus Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 12:43 pm

  16. Excellent excuse to get hammered on a Thursday.

Comment by Bill S. Preston, Esq. Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 12:45 pm

  17. I hope the beer is cold.

Comment by Anon Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 12:46 pm

  18. The weather will be spectacular. To me, it’s still a ballgame in the sunshine at beautiful Wrigley Field. Can’t beat fun at the old ballpark.

I don’t know that the Sox underachieved that much. They’re in the veryt tough American League — take a look at that opening day roster and tell me they were a favorite for the pennant. It’s a transitional year — they’re going to get younger and better defensively the next couple of years and build around a very solid pitching staff.

The Cubs are a disaster on all fronts. Not only that, but most of them are signed to long-term, big-money deals. It’s going to cost a boatload just to get rid of them.

The only bright spot this season for the Cubs was the resurgence of Derrek Lee, a true class ballplayer.

  19. its baseball, its all good.

Great fun having local un-offical rivals duke it out.

Comment by Ghost Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 12:54 pm

  20. ummmmm, Bacon, #15.

Comment by Amalia Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 12:57 pm

  21. The last meaningful game of baseball to be played in Illinois in 2009. Go Bears!

Comment by Vote Quimby! Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 1:04 pm

  22. ===The Cubs are a disaster on all fronts===

Major disappointment? For sure, but not a total disaster. They’re still slightly above .500 (for now), the pitching staff leads the league in opponents’ batting average, and this is probably Jim Hendry’s last year in charge.

But yeah, expectations were justifiably high and the Cubs have underperformed in so many areas. I expect the Rickett’s to cut payroll by as much as half for the next few years to recoup some of their investment asap.

So enjoy it while you can Cubs fans, because we’ll be the Chicago Royals for the next few seasons. Except they’ll still sell close to 3 million tickets regardless of the quality of the team on the field.

I just hope the Ricketts bring in some people to run the farm system, which is so pathetic it develops hitters like Fox and Hoffpair who can’t play a position. It’s like Hendry forgot there is no DH in our league.

This game still has some meaning for the Cubs though, so my guess if Cubs 8, Sox 5, season series tied.

That’s about as good as it will get for my team this year.

  23. Call it their playoffs!

Comment by He Makes Ryan Look Like a Saint Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 1:07 pm

  24. Go Cards!!!

Comment by Old Shepherd Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 1:07 pm

  25. Since I’m a Cards fan I’d have to say… “Go White Sox!!”

Comment by mkay Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 1:07 pm

  26. White Sox! We are still the better team.

Comment by Third Generation Chicago Native Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 1:11 pm

  27. It’s a disaster, and I’m a diehard. we have longterm contracts on aging underachievers, no farm system, and a team with no heart.

Seperately Jay Cutler is going to shorten chicago winters for the next decade more than global warming ever could. I am looking forward to having football end in late january/early february rather than early september. As a Patriots fan, there’s been nothing better than having the football season end and then 2 weeks later starting spring training. Trust me, it makes winter go a lot faster to have a winning football team.

Comment by Shore Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 1:12 pm

  28. Surprised Glenn Selig, The Publicity Agency isn’t having Rod Corruptovich hawk his book at the game.
    Missed opportunity for massive boos.

Comment by Hollis Elmore Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 1:20 pm

  29. Here’s hoping for a benchclearing brawl.

Comment by Jake from Elwood Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 1:26 pm

  30. Someone told me today that the Sox are starting a rookie pitcher, so if that’s the case, pencil in a 2-hit shutout for the rook, as is the standard anytime the Cubs go up against a newbie.

Comment by BigDog Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 1:27 pm

  31. Hmmmm I suggest “Bat Day” as a promotional idea. 37,000 disgusted fans, a 109 year old rivalry and small wooden bats offered free to all over- served middle aged men. Brilliant!

Comment by Anon Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 1:29 pm

  32. “Here’s hoping for a benchclearing brawl.” Jake went to a baseball game and a hockey game broke out?

Comment by What planet is he from? Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 1:32 pm

  35. I’m going! So it should be fun, if for nothing else, people watching!

    Comment by I'm going Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 1:48 pm

  36. Decided to golf instead. Go Sox!

Comment by Just wondering Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 1:52 pm

  37. Anything to say? Anything? I’d like to see Major League Baseball split into three 10-team leagues so the Cub, cards and Sox could play each other like 12 times a year.

Comment by Per Bak Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 1:54 pm

  38. Go Redbirds! St.Louis Rocks! Go Vikings!!!!

Comment by Irish Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 2:00 pm

  39. I can see a better game in Peoria or the Quad Cities for less money.

That said, “GO WHITE SOX” (I miss the clown that used to roam Comisky.)

Comment by Pot calling kettle Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 2:02 pm

  40. most meaningless sox/cubs game since the old windy city classic.

    Comment by L.S. Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 2:02 pm

  41. They should call this the Toilet Bowl game. The winner is the 2nd worst team in Major League baseball. The losing team goes to the minors without pay.

Comment by Boscobud Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 2:12 pm

  42. Come on
    Repeat after me
    Bye Bye Lou

Comment by Reddbyrd Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 2:21 pm

  43. I’m going? That’s about all I can say since it will be a triple-A game.

Comment by Randolph Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 2:23 pm

  44. Let’s see what Tyler Flowers can do. Then, on to 2010.

Comment by Boone Logan Square Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 2:39 pm

  45. A makeup game. As in — kiss off and makeup?

Me, I follow the Kane County Cougars. Much cheaper. And same skill levels.

Comment by Dooley Dudright Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 2:53 pm

  46. I’m going to be there with my Cub fan roommate, joined by 2 Sox fans. As long as the beer is cold, polish sausage is hot, and cell phone access unlimited, it’s the ‘Who Cares’ series, since they’re both mediocre this season.

    Comment by 312 Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 2:53 pm

  47. now exhausted from the 9th inning comeback. bacon, paulie, awesome. bye bye hump dome.

Comment by Amalia Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 3:05 pm

  48. 4 runs in the top of the ninth? Awesome!

That makes them about 3-40 when behind going into the eighth.

Comment by Lefty Lefty Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 3:35 pm

  49. Watching these two play each other is like kissing your sister. Go Cards!

Comment by wilecoyote Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 3:56 pm

  50. The game is a lot less interesting than it was a couple of months ago.

Comment by Stones Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 4:03 pm

  51. They should play it like the old “Windy City Classic”. Rotate players in and out. Let Lou, Ozzie and Hawk hit against Stoney and Farmer with Brenly catching. It’s be more watchable for sure.

Comment by Masters Phil Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 4:13 pm

  52. may the best loser win

Comment by jt Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 4:34 pm

  53. I say “19″ You say “08″

    1908
    1908
    1908

    101 years and counting

Comment by Fredbird Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 4:38 pm

  54. I guess you all know by now that the Sox did NOT throw in the towel and won their final metrodome game today by scoring all four 4 runs in the ninth inning after 2 outs and with only one strike left. The Cubs better look out on Thursday!

Comment by Responsa Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 4:53 pm

  55. Who cares? Why waste the time and energy of anyone? The cause is hopeless for either.

Comment by RJW Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 5:20 pm

  56. Fire BOTH ‘general managers’.

    Comment by sal-says Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 7:04 pm

  57. Two teams from two divisions with a good shot at having only 1 +.500 team (the division winner). Who’d a thunk it?

    Comment by 22Skidoo Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 7:59 pm

  58. I heard some good suggestions on the radio today. Rich, this should be a must read for tomorrow!

    1. After the National Anthem is finished, loud cheers! Then, 3 hours of silence. I don’t care if you’re a Cubs fan still hoping or a Sox fan wanting to rub it in, just stay SILENT! Baseball is dead to us!
    2. No Cubs or White Sox jerseys or hats. CHICAGO BEARS ORANGE all around.
    3. Lastly, even if it’s a no-hitter, after the final game, everyone sing BEAR DOWN!

    Comment by ANON13 Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 8:00 pm

  59. Always care. This is baseball…one of the things that link us to our childhood.

    Go Sox!

Comment by Bobs yer Wednesday, Sep 2, 09 @ 8:02 pm

  60. –I’m going to be there with my Cub fan roommate, joined by 2 Sox fans. As long as the beer is cold, polish sausage is hot, and cell phone access unlimited,–

A cell phone? You’re really missing the point of the exercise. Leave it at home.
