* 9:53 am - Gov. Pat Quinn has appointed five new U of I trustees. All five are graduates of the school. From a press release…
The five appointments include: Karen A. Hasara, former Mayor of Springfield; Timothy N. Koritz, Staff Anesthesiologist, Rockford Memorial Hospital; Edward L. McMillan, Principal and CEO, McMillan LLC; Pamela B. Strobel, retired Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer of Exelon; and Carlos E. Tortolero, President, National Museum of Mexican Art. […]
These trustees join Christopher G. Kennedy, president of Merchandise Mart Properties Inc., and Lawrence Oliver II, chief counsel in charge of internal investigations for Boeing Co., who were appointed to the Board by Governor Quinn on August 26.
The University of Illinois Board of Trustees consists of thirteen members, including the Governor. Nine are appointed by the Governor for terms of six years, and three student trustees (one from each campus) are elected by referenda on their campuses for one-year terms. One of these student trustees is designated by the Governor to have an official vote.
McMillan is a reappointment.

There first job should be see how to keep tuition increases to a level at or below the level of inflation. College trustee boards seem to little grasp on the impact of ever increasing tuition, fees, and room and board.
They just accept the President’s budget

Karen Hasara instead of Bill Black, as the token publicly recognizable Republican? Sorry, Bill, you’ll still have to buy tickets to see the football team play at home.
And is McMillan one of the two Af-Am board members who wanted to continue on? their case seemed to be — we have a superior right to remain on, based on our racial identification, and we are too ineffective as board members to have been involved in serious actions such as twists in the usual admissions policy.
Please, let’s end this nonsense. And anyone who thinks that Northwestern, Yale, and other privates schools are not subject to the influence of major donors or major public officials is a fool.

Some of Quinn’s other picks have been questionable but i think this board looks pretty competent. Notice how they got alumni from each of the 3 UI campuses. Pretty slick.

Why Chris Kennedy had been picked is beyond me - but he made up for it with these selections.
Now get the two bum hold-outs off the board…it’s just not fair to those who, despite having absolutely no evidence against them of any wrongdoing, put the University first and voluntarily resigned.

WOW! Imagine what could have been done if Quinn chose businesspeople and other community leaders who didn’t have a college degree!
We could have seen some meaningful reform and some better connection to the real world, couldn’t we?

He should have appointed Dan Hynes. That would have taken care of that pesky primary challenge, while giving Dan an out from a record 12th term as state comptroller.

Nice to see U of I grads being appointed. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think that being a grad should be a requirement as having some legitimate outside voices on the board is a good idea, but there should at least be a presence if not a majority of grads on that board.
…. too bad the chances of the Chief coming back are about the same as Blago getting elected President in 2016….

Nothing, aside from a Cubs or Hawks championship, would make me happier, but I’d say that this merely makes me 99% sure that the Chief will sadly never return rather than 100% sure.

I was curious as to whether these trustees receive any type of compensation for their service? And, if so, what amount? I am not asking this to be critical but rather it is just something that I have always wondered about.
Kristen McQueary of the Daily Southtown newspaper had an excellent article a few days ago about our elected state representatives and state senators having the ability to grant individuals “tuition waivers” to any of our state of Illinois colleges and universities. The recipients of these “free tuition waivers” do not have to prove a need for these lucrative gifts (tuition waivers)to qualify for them (courtesy of the state of Illinois taxpayer). I decided to look up the list of students that had been given these lucrative “freebies” by my own local state representative and senator. Perhaps it was just coincidental but I noticed that many of the names of these local students who got these “freebies” courtesy of Illinois taxpayers just happened to be family members of some of our local politicians or, they were from families that were active in helping in the campaigns of the same political party that these state elected representatives and senators were from. Quite a coincidence? Many of these students came from families that do not appear to have a dire financial need for this assistance (courtesy of the taxpayers). How many kids from non-politically active families would be thrilled to have this dog bone tossed their way as their family struggles to make ends meet? It appeared (at least, on the surface) that it was more like tossing a “doggie treat” to someone who helped you or one of your fellow party members in their campaign efforts. Maybe this is just a normal “perk” for our elected officials to be able to give out to their Party faithful? And, it is perhaps something that both Democrats and Republicans have been doing for decades? However, as a taxpayer, I would say that Governor Quinn should revisit and “end” this lucrative perk that we have been allowing our elected state representatives and state senators to be handing out to those that they wish to reward. The miserable financial situation that our state elected officials have allowed Illinois to descend into makes this ongoing political practice seem “outrageous” to the average Illinois taxpayer. It may be perfectly legal but it certainly seems to be “ethically” questionable. Great article by Ms. McQueary pointing out this controversial political tool that has been brazenly misused by certain elected officials for personal political gain.

It will be up to Quinn to give them directions to start getting costs under control. We don’t have much data to suggest either way.

The only way that the Board and leadership can keep tuition, fees and room expenses down is if the Governor and legislature return to the traditional funding level. When State support goes down, tuition goes up.

Didn’t Karen Hasara graduate from Sangamon State University? Then, LATER, SSU becomes a campus of the U of I? How is that being a U of i “grad”????
