Hynes’ new ad and Quinn’s video promo flops

Posted in:

* Dan Hynes has just posted his latest TV ad online. It’s been running since Friday. Rate it

* Meanwhile, Gov. Pat Quinn’s online videos continue to be excellent. The problem is the campaign doesn’t even try to get people to watch them. Here’s a video from last week’s petition filing

That Quinn video has been online since last Wednesday, yet it only had 61 views before I posted it here. I just don’t get those guys. They have a valuable asset and they waste it.

  1. Some tips for Quinn:

    1 - email video to supporters;
    2 - post on your Facebook page;
3 - Buy a standing ad on Capitolfax and just update the video.

  2. I don’t think anyone except us hacks are paying attention to this back and forth right now. Quinn had to go up on the air to defend against Hynes’ attack and now we get this back and forth. The one thing that strikes me about Hynes’ ad, is the people in them look like actors- not real people. Say what you will about Quinn’s ad, but the people in them look like regular people you would see on the street. It will be fun to see a poll after a few weeks of this stuff, but I doubt you see much movement on either side.

Also. good, simple, straight forward advice from YDD for the Quinn folks.

  3. This Hynes ad is really good and very effective. It zings ya. I give it an A.

I agree with the suggestions made by YDD.

  4. It’s no wonder Quinn’s video only has 61 views. I mean if there’s one topic to grab voters’ attention its the nightmarishly bureaucratized process of petition filing.

Smell that? It smells like BORING.

    Comment by Jimmy87 Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 4:24 pm

  5. That wouldn’t be for general audiencies, Jimmy87. You don’t put that on network TV. It’d be for his supporters. It’s a good vid.

  6. Viewing these ads made me realize first and foremost that I (probably along with most regular Illinoisans) am still filled up and fed up with the overabundance of campaign ads which poisoned the airwaves during the elections a just year ago. Unfortunately most people are disgusted with Illinois politics and are just tuning out completely at this point, I believe.

Comment by Responsa Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 4:29 pm

  7. Responsa, if TV ads didn’t work, nobody would run them.

    They work.

Comment by Rich Miller Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 4:30 pm

  8. I agree that it is a good video. As in the production quality and script are good - I also realize it will never hit the airwaves.

But even if you are a supporter do you really care about a 1:09 long video about the filing process? I mean I guess I’m missing the point of some predawn footage that, even for his most ardent supporters, must be a lot like watching C-SPAN.

  9. ===are just tuning out completely at this point, I believe. ===

Your gut feeling doesn’t make it a fact. Try to keep that in mind here.

  10. ==I just don’t get those guys.==
The problem with their campaign is the same as the problem with the governor’s administration.
They just don’t have a clue.
That starts at the top and works its way down the food chain.

  11. YDD on the money as always. (I initially typed “right” as always, but of course he is actually more left…)

Comment by soccermom Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 4:44 pm

  12. I love seeing Claude in that video. It’s a great day in the life of a campaign vid. And there are at least hundreds if not thousands of people who would have watched that vid (myself included) if they let us know it was there.

Comment by Chicago Cynic Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 4:51 pm

  13. Is there any information about how big of a buy both Hynes and Quinn have done?

Comment by Anon Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 4:51 pm

  14. Anon, you should subscribe.

Comment by Rich Miller Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 4:56 pm

  15. =====Anon, you should subscribe=====

I figured that’d be the response Rich, but it was worth a shot HA HA

I was more interested in who’s buy was larger. Hynes has to be spending more to catch up in name ID. If Quinn is matching him dollar for dollar, he’s in trouble. I was in Chicago over the weekend, and I saw a couple Hynes ads, but never saw Quinn’s.

    Same answer.

  17. “It zings ya. I give it an A. ”

    Will County Woman. Suprising.

I find it funny that in a discussion of how professional and well done the Quinn videos are, the Hynes’ fans try to use them as an example of how the campaign doesn’t have a clue. The fact that they are professional and well done clearly shows that they actually do have a clue.

Looks like the campaign has put up a new website. Looks great. There are a lot of videos up that weren’t before and more prominently featured. Should help w/ hits. The announcement video is particularly good.

  18. While I like Hynes over Quinn, I don’t believe that Hynes’ TV ad is entirely honest. The ad states that a family of 4 making $50,000 would pay $600 more in taxes; however, the ad fails to take into account the increased tax deductions proposed by Quinn. The Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy published a report for a family of 4 making $50,0000, stating:

    Under Current Law
    IL base income$ 50,000
    Personal exemptions 4,000
    Dependent exemptions 4,000
    IL net income 42,000
    Initial tax owed @ 3% rate 1,260
    Property tax credit 130
    Final tax owed 1,130

    Under Quinn:

    IL base income$ 50,000
    Personal exemptions 12,000
    Dependent exemptions 12,000
    IL net income 26,000
    Initial tax owed @ 4.5% rate 1,170
    Property tax credit 130
    Final tax owed 1,040
Change in tax owed ($)$ –90
    Change in tax owed (%)–8.0%

Comment by Bathsheba Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:50 pm

  19. Actually, Bathsheba, the Hynes ad is truthful. Quinn dropped the plan with deductions and supported a plan that was a straight 50% increase.

  20. Johnnyc,

I stand by the rating that I to the Hynes ad. That ad is worthy of A. It’s sharp, hard-hitting, to the point and indicting: Quinn is and the editorial board speaking for themselves, it’s not a voiceover. That’s powerful. That’s like Tim Russert playing back tapes of things that people said. Come on now, you know how powerful that was when Tim Russert did that.

Comment by Will County Woman Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 6:36 pm

  21. Claude must have had a cold. AA thinks Pat Quinn’s petitions would smell like damp paper mixed with (CENSORED.)

Good or bad, placing scarce resources into that kind of a vid would torque me off big time if I were a Quinn funder.

I like the Hynes ad. Very Good on my rating scale. I’ve watched that entire ed board interview (and BTW, it was not the Trib) and that clip isn’t the only time PQ sticks a Florsheim in his face.

Comment by Arthur Andersen Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 7:56 pm

  22. Hynes has a solid punch with that ad. Quinn vid….hmmm… let’s see, yes we filed our petitions and it was a snore..

Comment by RobRoy Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 10:31 pm

  23. Here’s the thing; the other campaign spot for Quinn that had the unregistered istockphoto images may have been a fluke. So I watched this one about standing in line to file.

But I know my Warner Brothers cartoons, and I know the instrumental tune “Power House” when I hear it, and I will bet you my Tex Avery collection Quinn’s staff did not pay for the rights to use that tune underneath their footage.

That’s two incidents in one week; people in advertising get fired for slips like that.

I blame it on their youth: kids fresh out of college are used to just stealing things off the internet as if everything is free.

Comment by Some Guy Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 11:09 pm

  24. If you’re looking for a video on petition filing this may not hold a candle to Pat Quinn, but by comparison the point is the same!

  25. LOL.

Comment by Will County Woman Tuesday, Nov 3, 09 @ 12:04 am

  26. Some Guy, thanks for pointing out the Looney Tunes music. It was driving me crazy trying to figure out where I had heard it before.

The Quinn video is excellent — he should use whoever did it for his less-than-inspired spots.

To date, the best spot, by far, is the Hynes intro featuring his teacher, wife (superstar), neighbor and Adlai.

The one thing I can’t figure out is how, in 2009, I look older than Adlai. He served in Korea, for goodness sakes.

I’ll have to ask the guys at the tavern later how that could have happened…

Comment by wordslinger Tuesday, Nov 3, 09 @ 10:38 am

  27. To think that Claude has been with PQ since 76 shows how devoted he really is. Pre-dawn petition drive video supported that. Especially liked the end with the “Ahh, smell this?” Victory!

Comment by Liz Tuesday, Nov 3, 09 @ 6:47 pm

  28. I don’t understand all this back and forth why not tell us what they can do for Illinois. I love the little boy in the Hynes commercial he is in my daughters pre K class and just too sweet.
