  1. Very nice positive spot. She even looks good. Who is her firm?

  2. Excellent production values, outside testimonial, great issue for her primary race in her district. Little Obama reference there at the end, too. 9/10.

  3. Nice. She looks like a winner, which is a nice change for her.

  4. pretty awful spot. She assumes people in the 10th don’t read newspapers and can’t figure out how awful a state the state is in. One thing that differentiates us in the 10th from her people in the 9th is that we believe in responsibility, fiscal and personal and she ignores that with this ad.

  5. Good slick ad but falls flat in the 10th and fails to address the pressing issues of this campaign: jobs, corruption, the war on terror…good fluff but short on substance.

  6. Hey Shore, you need to read more. Did you not hear her, we are just begining? Or is it that you do not understand that domestic vilance is a lack of respect and responsibilty and happens in the 10th distruct too? Ignorance is no excuse you need to read more.

Comment by MBBG Friday, Dec 4, 09 @ 11:28 am

  7. MBBG, I can think of like 45,000 issues more important than this right now. I have criticized commander Kirk in the past for fishing expeditions to rescue bangladeshi human rights activists when issues like Iraq, the party falling off a cliff, the economy, ect were more important. She’s playing this dirty game because she knows shes wrong on every issue. She called for a troop escalation yesterday, when durbin, presumably considerably more moderate wouldn’t back it.

If you are a mom in glencoe (liberal turf) right now are you more worried about corruption, increased spending, afghanistan, Iran, taxes, the economy, or this stuff?

Also I’m sure an amateur could look in a budget and find cuts to social service agencies like the one she’s talking about. Next.

  8. Well produced, but it’s the not very subtle pandering which seems to characterize her ads so far that bothers me. The Jewish thing a couple weeks ago, now the women’s vote in this one. I’m not so sure she, (or maybe her agency) fully has a handle on what works in the 10th.

Comment by Responsa Friday, Dec 4, 09 @ 12:41 pm

  9. It’s a pretty well-done ad.

My main concern is that she’s switching messages without burning in the first one.

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, Dec 4, 09 @ 12:42 pm

  10. I prefer positive spots, and agree with others above who note the power of 3rd party testimonials. Shore, you’re wrong about a lot of things, and this is no different. 44,999 issues are more important to women who will vote in the Democratic primary in the 10th CD? Not bloody likely. This ad is effective, well produced and if there is enough money behind it, no one will be asking about the state budget situation. Someone is going to have to spend money to get those issues in play. I’m guessing we won’t see that happen.

Remember the audience Shore. Clearly Hamos’ ad is not targeted to you.

    Comment by 47th Ward Friday, Dec 4, 09 @ 12:43 pm

  11. It’s a nice ad. Hamos’ work with domestic violence is probably one of her best accomplishments out of Springfield. However, I’m surprised that she hasn’t gone after what I consider the number one issue in the race: jobs.

    Comment by 10th District Advocate Friday, Dec 4, 09 @ 12:51 pm

  12. Shore, according to the American Institute for Domestic Violence, domestic violence is the leading cause of injury in the United States for women. that’s 5.3 million women every year. Now, I’m a Dan Seals supporter through and through, but I’m still willing to step up here. No one’s saying that domestic violence is the only issue facing this country, but surely you can agree that such statistics are worth addressing.

As for the ad itself, I’m not a huge fan. In a preposterously short primary in a struggling economy, Hamos is starting off with a huge name recognition gap. In a desperate race for definition, is this really the best route to go? I don’t think so.

  13. In 2006 and 2008 the democrats argument was, yes mark kirk is a very nice guy who has done a lot of good things in the district but he’s a republican and the republicans have destroyed the country. Now in 2010, the state is REALLY screwed up and hamos is a rank and file democrat and she’s allowed to get away with this nonsense. Domestic violence is an issue, but it’s like saying president obama’s doing really well on foreign policy right now because we have great relations with cote d’ivoire.

She’s distracting voters from her epic failures in springfield. cute doesn’t cut it in times like these.

the last time I saw an ad like this was michael steele running for senate talking about how he liked puppies.

  14. The ad was well produced and it will work well with it’s intended audience (liberal women). The problem is, I don’t think this is the strategically right move for her campaign. Sara Feigenholtz tried this route in the 5th CD special election last year ago against Quigley and a bunch of other men–hoping all she’d have to do is get a majority of the female vote and win.

It failed miserably. A great article at the Chicago Daily Observer here:

  15. ABCBoy, Russ is an experienced hand, and I enjoy his stuff, but just about every prediction he makes is wrong.

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, Dec 4, 09 @ 1:46 pm

  16. “first one”

her first message was what? We’re better off today than we were 13 years ago when she took office? this is also not a message it’s a distraction. Forgive me but how is the way out of the mess in d.c. to get someone who created a mess in springfield?

Comment by shore Friday, Dec 4, 09 @ 2:05 pm

  17. Pleasant ad but not particularly compelling. First time I haven’t heard the “daughter of Holocaust survivors” line in her communication. As Joe Biden would say, Hamos typically uses a noun, a verb, “Holocaust survivors” and “at Obama’s side”. She was my state rep for years and I never knew she was Jewish until recently - she is all about pandering to Jews and to women, and it’s rather offensive. And likely not effective across a large district in which she is mostly unknown.

Comment by NSDem Friday, Dec 4, 09 @ 3:28 pm

  18. nicely produced, but is this what we need to grab the
women’s vote? women getting assaulted? is that
some code for women, we are not safe? and, if you
know Julie, you know that the woman in the ad is not
just from that group, she is part of a close knit group
of Julie pals, a years long friendship. now that means
she is close to someone who does good work, but it is
sure not some group deciding that Julie is amazing.

if I lived in the district this topic would not grab my vote.
    it’s the economy stupid.

Comment by Amalia Friday, Dec 4, 09 @ 8:46 pm

  19. I live in the 10th, and know that this is just the sort of issue — local, but with national implications — that a congressperson can actually address! I would much rather she weigh in on a dozen issues like this — pollution, schools, safety, local job creation — than say, peace in the middle east which is above her pay grade. I trust she will vote solidly democratic on all that big stuff, but will actually work hard and succeed in the small stuff.
