* The Sierra Club endorsed Gov. Pat Quinn the other day, but don’t expect any endorsement like that for Republican US Senate candidate Mark Kirk…
Environmental groups who champion cap-and-trade say Kirk has now cost himself general election support in a decidedly Democratic state. Cap-and-trade tops their agenda and appears to surpass other pro-environment positions the congressman holds.
“Mark Kirk is catering to a very vocal, very angry minority,” says Jack Darin, director of the Sierra Club’s Illinois chapter. “This is a very important seat and we want to know that our next U.S. senator is going to be a leader on environmental and energy policy.”
Both the Sierra Club and League of Conservation Voters sided with Kirk in his 2008 race against Wilmette Democrat Dan Seals, a battle that drew millions of dollars in spending and national attention.
In the past, Kirk has used endorsements from groups like the Sierra Club and others (anti-gun, pro-choice, pro-gay rights, etc.) to prove to his constituents that he’s not like other Republicans. That’s a big reason, maybe one of the main reasons, why he’s withstood assault after assault during gigantic Democratic years. Then again, Illinois isn’t like his congressional district - it’s more conservative as a whole.
* Turning to more local politics, a comment by Todd Stroger caused a stuttering, sputtering rejoinder by Mayor Daley. First, the comment…
The embattled president of the Cook County Board says he can name a long list of elected officials and labor union leaders who have forsaken him. But it is the name at the top of Todd H. Stroger’s tally of defectors that stands out: Mayor Richard M. Daley.
Chicago’s mayor, Mr. Stroger said, has delivered a “slap” to his face by failing to support him in his bid for re-election when he badly needs political support.
The mayor’s reply…
“I’ve never slapped anyone in the face — even symbolically I haven’t,” Daley said. “When is the last time you heard me criticize him?”
Asked if he supports Stroger’s re-election bid, Daley tripped all over himself.
“No, I didn’t — how do you know? How does he know?” Daley stammered.
Told that Stroger believes he does not have the mayor’s endorsement, Daley said, “Well, that’s his problem.” Asked if he intends to issue an endorsement, Daley said, “We’ll see.”
In more important county board president endorsement news, Ald. Toni Preckwinkle was endorsed by the New Trier Township Democrats yesterday with a whopping 83 percent of the votes.
* Back to statewide endorsements. I told you about this last week, but the Illinois Federation of Teachers made it official today. From a press release…
Citing his record as Illinois comptroller and stances on education and labor issues, the Illinois Federation of Teachers has unanimously endorsed Dan Hynes for governor in the Feb. 2, 2010 primary election.
Hynes wants a progressive tax increase, which would have to first be approved by voters, since he’d have to change the state’s constitution. The IFT, however, was a major force in pushing for a higher tax increase right away. Here’s how the IFT finesses the issue…
“The IFT has supported a variety of revenue proposals over the years to provide needed funding for public education and public services,” said Geppert. “The IFT still supports an income tax increase this year to prevent layoffs in schools and in state government. Dan Hynes is the best candidate to work with us and finally fix the state’s structural deficit for the long term.”
The governor is announcing some West Side endorsements today…
Quinn is announcing support from U.S. Rep. Danny Davis, state Sens. Rickey Hendon and Kimberly Lightford, state Reps. Annazette Collins and Karen Yarborough, as well as Cook County Commissioners Earlean Collins and Robert Steele. Other endorsements include Chicago Alds. Walter Burnett, 27th, Sharon Denise-Dixon, 24th, Emma Mitts, 37th, and Ed Smith, 28th.
I kinda wonder if anyone will use the opportunity to ask Quinn about Hendon’s candidacy for lieutenant governor.
Also today, Citizen Action Illinois announced its endorsement of Quinn and Giannoulias. The IFT endorsed Giannoulias on Friday. And several downstate legislators endorsed Sen. Bill Brady’s GOP gubernatorial campaign over the weekend. And Rep. Suzi Bassi was shunned by her own township organization…
A challenger to state Rep. Suzie Bassi landed the official endorsement of the Palatine Township Republican organization Saturday, continuing a historic feud between the incumbent and a local party boss.
Tom Morrison, a Palatine businessman, was backed by the organization over Bassi, who has held the 54th District seat since 1999. […]
“It was not the least bit unexpected,” Bassi said of the group’s snub. “But I’m glad I showed up to remind them of what I have done.”

I think not getting endorsed by the Sierra Club is the best thing that could’ve happened to Kirk. And when presented with the facts, I firmly believe that a vast majority of voters in this state would oppose the Cap & Tax bill.

-Todd Stroger should do the sensible thing and get out of the county board pres race. he can’t and won’t win. he staying in just helps terry o’brien, and todd knows it. todd is being selfish and silly.
-The anomisity is clearly one-sided: emanating from Quinn’s side. sadly, he has been very ungracious toward Dan Hynes. In fact, recently at one of the debates someone asked them if they would support whomever won on he Democratic side after Primary. Hynes chimed in right away that he would support Quinn, but Quinn did not answer the question. Hynes has been strictly business in the primary race. Quinn has constantly harped on Hynes’ political father, which has been unnecessary. gee, what other pols with famous pol fathers in the democratic party might he have a problem with? there are so many of them after all. whatever.

I think I understand the point you were trying to make here, but by some metrics that isn’t accurate. On an issue spectrum of liberal vs. conservative it’s true that IL-10 leans liberal, but on an expected vote share basis of Dem vs. GOP, IL-10 is more Republican than the state as a whole.

The Sierra Club doesnt even support nuclear power - the CLEANEST form of energy. They are unrealistic - i dont know why Quinn would tout this endorsement. Especially in a state that runs 50% coal power and 50% nuclear power.

Rich: I don’t think it is the point — waste is indeed a problem for reasons other than greenhouse emissions, but it’s arguably a handleable problem. I don’t know if nuclear is cleaner than wind or solar though — the clear answer here is the government needs to set a floor on oil prices: with high gas prices will come innovation, otherwise diddly.

FYI, our district gave obama the same vote total that the state gave obama roughly 62 percent. The difference is state democrats that voted for obama are more liberal and state republicans that voted for mccain are more conservative than our district.
If kirk was in the senate for cap and trade I think he’d be much more collins and snowe working towards building common ground on issues like this than an Inhofe as he’s been voting this year on things like health care and abortion.
It is worth a debate however if we are going to get 2001-2005 kirk which was mostly republican but staying true to his guts on guns and abortion.
2005-2008 kirk which was super liberal and trying to out fox mr. pup. or 2009 kirk which is basically peter roskam.
If he’s elected I think we’ll see a new movie in Illinois politics play out over 6 years called “the brain of a moderate:which side will mr. kirk think with today?”

What Quinn actually said was that he was a Democrat and always has been. Quinn has never started a third party to run against the Democrat nominee like the Hynes family did when they went against then Mayor Harold Washington.

I agree, the merits of bringing up that 20+ years ago Hynes broke away from the Democrat party to run against the Democrat nominee for Mayor are debatable, but that is an accurate characterization of Quinn’s statement unlike a previous comment.

gee, now dontcha feel real good about the thomson deal that was done cut BEFORE it was actually rolled out to the public? sure, this one guy was caught. but, terrorists are like roaches… you see/get one, there are many more like it in hiding, just waiting for the lights to be turned off. btw…he was caught AFTER the mumbai terrorists attacks occured. geeze… i feel really good about the Phi Betta Kappa and the Harvard Brain Trust running things and making political decsions in their political interests at the expense of homeland/national security interests. neither the harvard brain trust nor the phi beta kappa ever put on a uniform and risked his life in service to the u.s., neither has jan schakowsky for that matter, but mark kirk has.

Kirk should have remembered that most of those angry talk-radio callers to his Congressional office aren’t even from Illinois or his district. If he had stuck to his guns he could have impressed moderate voters with his conviction on a sensible position.
Republicans are forgetting that the tea-bagger crowd might win you the GOP primary but a large majority of the voting public consistently say they want environmental protection and action on climate change.

IFT endorses Quinn, why? Well, it has nothing to do with a comptroller’s record on education issues (one might ask what record?), but all to do with the fact that Quinn dared even raise the issue of a two-tiered pension system so that state would not continue to be socked for that luxury. Granted Quinn backed off (which was bad in my opinion), but that he dared raised it. He lost the endorsement that minute. Watch the other teacher unions go for Pat so that they don’t throw out their chance of connected with Quinn going forward on issues.

Unfortunately for him, Quinn does have an education record.
Let’s see. What issues would those “other teachers unions” like to be connected with Quinn on. Underfunding universities so that SIU and UofI are worried about making their payroll? Squandering almost $1 billion in education stimulus money on operating expenses while only increasing ed funding by a minimal amount? Chronically underfunding early childhood ed.? Potentially cutting community colleges’ funding by 50% this fiscal year? I’m sure that they are all just jumping at the chance to “connect” with Quinn on all those issues. Like Afcsme, they might be scared of him but they are not exactly fans.

sangodem, the only position you can count on kirk keeping with no matter what is Israel. he will never quit on Israel. Everything else is on the table. I’m sure he’s telling conservatives right now he would have been for roberts and next october in a debate at u of i when asked he’ll say he would have been for sotomayer. His predecessor was a big health guy who probably would have worked with obama on reform, I doubt if kirk were in the senate he’d do that.
will county woman is right on thomson, lynn sweet will run 40 stories on desiree rogers but none on what is done at the local state and federal level to assess the damage of thomison. No inquiries to folks at the working or even deputy assistant secretary level to see whether or not this will put Illinois on the terrorist map, no calls to conservative think tanks to see whether this will really make us safer. We’ll have to eat it and 5 years from now, like every other issue we’ll wake up with screaming headlines complaining about some breakdown in security that caused some incident and wonder why our reporters were covering the shrimp in the east room.

No - Carbon emissions were the point of the cap and trade legislation - nukes have 0 co2 emissions.
The Sierra club does not support nuclear or coal or natural gas - and if you look it up I bet they have filed lawsuits against siting of wind and solar. after all, lawsuits are what they do best.

Seems like the Sierra Club has jumped the shark. People like a clean environment, but are no longer drinking the catastrophe koolaid.
When regular working folks see that regulating CO2 as a pollutant and starting the carbon cap and trade markets will kill the prospects for gaingul reemployment, they will think long and hard before voting for the supporters of these policies.

Hey @BoredNow, you’re right. Made me go back and watch the whole thing. Dicky Betts endorses Quinn! Love it. Seriously though, these videos are really the best thing going on this campaign season. I bet voters are feeling crushed by the policy/issue jabs that continue on and on. These are a good break from that. If that Marin article is right, these videos and storylines are going to carry the day. A caring governor, unrefined, passionate about issues but not afraid to speak off the cuff. Good stuff.

Hynes shows what happens when you get raised in a politically connected family. More often than not, past parental performance indicates future offspring behavior in Illinois. Dan has been the beneficiary of his dad’s political fiefdom. Voters have every right to be wary of what that would bring later on down the line.

The Chicago First Party founded by Tom Hynes was an attempt to capitalize on the racial tensions prominent at that time in Chicago politics.
It appealed to the lowest common denominator and was fueled by the greed of the regular dems who refused to let Mayor Washington lead. What was worse than the founding of the party, was Hynes’s dropping out so that Vrdolyak could have a chance. This, of course, was not inspired by any love of Vrodo but only Mr. Hynse’s fear of white voter backlash by splitting the vote.
Although these events were a while ago, they still resonate in many people’s minds whether the Hynes camp likes it or not.
Those who rise because of nepotism can surely fall with it too.

Yeah, Tom Hynes (not Dan Hynes) ran back in the early 1980’s against Harold Washington. If you read the biography about Harold Washington, you learn that when Harold Washington was still a State Senator, he got in a big fight with Tom Hynes over property tax tates…Basically some civic/reform group did a study in which they found that homes in the Irish Wards were assessed at a lower rate than homes that were being purchased for the same price in the African-American wards. So basically Tom Hynes had it rigged so people in the Irish Wards were paying less in property taxes, even though their homes were worth the same or if not more as people living in the neighboring Black Wards. Harold Washington joined forces with all these community groups and blasted Tom Hynes. Then, Tom Hynes ran as an “independent democrat” and lost to Washington for Mayor. The book is a good read if you are into Chicago history.

that’s interesting. So, Tom Hynes was the Bernie Epton of the 1987 election. By then washington had proved himself an effective leader and had nullified many non-black concerns as to how he would run the city. Not surprisingly he won that 1987 election pretty handidly.

Irrespective of today’s endorsements, neither (Dan) hynes nor quinn are all that highly visible with black voters. Let’s face it neither of them are Bill Clinton (pre the Obama factor, hopefully), and perhaps thankfully.
But Quinn has had the advantage with the black vote—even before today’s endorsement, due to the fact that he is the incumbent.

Wow! Based on what you wrote, care to share you thoughs on Lisa Madigan? When she was considering a run for governor, it seemed that everyone was willing to judge her on her own merits. Quinn? I don’t know what lines of attack he was planning to use against her. But the same people who argue that she should be judged on her own merits as an office holder seemingly aren’t willing to do the same when it comes to Dan Hynes. Is it a gender thing? Are people that afraid of backlash from Mike Madigan? Intellectually there is no difference here so, why give one consideration and not the other?

So Black voters don’t know Pat Quinn? What about Latino Voters? And Pat Quinn can’t do anything about the evnironment right? What about using the purchasing power of the state to encourage alternative energy development. Or tax credits for producers of biofuels.

tom hynes, whatever his faults may have been, was a product of his time/environment just like mayor richard j. daley. dan hynes held no ill-will against Obama after losing to him in 2004. they became good friends in fact.

The problem with the Chicago First Party was not racism but it’s willingness to use whatever means neccessary or available at the time to achieve it’s ends.
The purpose being to elimate a progressive democrat intent on making reforms in order to keep an entreched, politically corrupt system in place.
In that regard, the apple hasn’t rolled far at all.
